I want to do a reading for the coming year. I know you do this Hilary, and I think some others do too. I'd like to hear a bit about selecting the question, any sort of extra-special ritual anyone has to go along with the casting, etc. (I'm torn between trying to find a way to set aside a quiet afternoon and just going over to the 'flash' reading and saying "Hey, '03, wazzup!?!")

W-e-l-l... I just sat on the floor with pen and paper and bowl of marbles and asked for guidance for the coming year. I suppose by that I meant mainly 'what am I meant to be doing next - what is this year for?'.

I don't personally like doing the 'big' readings at the computer, but I think that this is mainly because I want to take them away from the 'work place' - not because of the rival merits of computers and marbles.

I received 18 (ouch) changing to 57, btw. First time in many years that this answer hasn't been just a single hexagram. I already have one idea about the 'father's corruption', but my main hope with these readings is that I'll have worked most of it out within 12 months

Hilary,

Hx 18 changing to hx 57?

I think this is all about healing. And for you next year could well have a lot to do with healing emotional work to do with your family. Especially with your father's recent death.

And maybe hx 57 asks you to be very thorough and penetrating and subtle. Being willing to go into deep territory that you've not been able to reach before.

It sounds like a special healing time to me.

Very best wishes for 2003,

Mick

Thanks Hilary, that's very helpful. Yes, both intimate and informal.

I can't help but think that 18-->57 is somewhat appropriate for the world at large too, for the coming year all have in common.

I have a little more business to attend to that belongs in this year, and then I'll sit down myself. Thanks.

I had 18 changing to 10 some months ago, in a rather important question about a decision, including my attitude for the coming time. I thought it meant cleaning up a lot of rubbish in myself, in order to find my Real Way of Treading. The CAPS are for the difference with simple everyday ways of behaving, this was about essential conduct, and finding my authentic way. It turned out to be exactly that. The rubbish had to do a lot with ?stemfathers? and such, outworn ways of thinking and (re-)acting, inherited from my family or old experiences and carried on without noticing that they were hollow or simply not ?me?.

Hex.57 is penetrating, but its image is the bestowing of seals. Your ?seal? colors every action and thought, so they all will work in the same direction, towards your own tao. I think that is the penetrating part of 57. Clean up your seal and your tao will be very different ? much more like your real destination instead of something one stumbles into.

No idea if it really means this. The combination of the two three-day periods is important I think. But right now I cannot figure out that one.
Dec.18 was Gengshen day (3 days before winter solstice!). Gengshen is a special Geng day, 3 days before the end of a 60-day cycle.
Jia is always the first day of every cycle, 10-day or 60-day. Dec.22 was Jia day, and then Jan.1. In 2003 the first day of the year happens to be Jia, other years are different.

Dec.21 was winter solstice, which is much more a start for the new year than January first. The first day of this new year, Dec.22, was Wooden Rat day: a Jia day, the first of the big cycle. This is special, it can be any sign.
Dec.18 was a Geng day. The three days after Geng are the same three days before Jia day ..
Maybe there is a very special new start this year? Both the first day after midwinter and the first day of the Western new year are a Wooden Rat day.
Hex.18 to 57 ..

Another me again ..
There is a great set of cards which I always use when I have a Real Big Question, especially about a larger period of time. I hope they will be translated some day, right now they exist only in Dutch. Han Boering made them.
But without the cards you can do it too: pull 9 hexagrams. Choose your own way, maybe you have other cards, or use coins, or the new Flash, whatever to generate 9 hexagrams. Lay them out in the Lo-Shu order: first hex. below center, second at right top, third left middle and so on. In 'FengShui' books you can find the realm of these places. But I will put a diagram on my website. I have it already, so it should be there in time for a New-year's eve reading.

There is a pattern for the 9 hexagrams at http://www.anton-heyboer.org/i_ching/structures
Hit the link 'the big pattern' at the top.

If the hexagrams are chosen with cards, one can never get the same hex. on two different places, which might be interesting too.
So I think the other methods are better. Simply disregard any moving lines (or if you want to delve very deep, look at those too, but then you get a lot to look at)

There are many more layers in this lay-out of cards, and in the coming time I will put them too in the website, but that is a lot of work. So it will take a lot of time.

Thank you for the ideas on 18 to 57! It's good to have some positive ideas to associate with it - it always seems rather grim to me. Does anyone have any good ideas about 'using praise' (18,5) on a personal level? If it were about office politics it would be easy enough, but this is not so easy to translate.

Visiting LiSe's site to look at the card layout, I find it's grown a sitemap - brilliant!

Hi Hilary,

Working on reforming old ideas as a means of aquiring influence and success. A continuation of the developmental process which you've begun.

That's how I read it.

Well, a difficult one has come up for me too -- #29, unchanging.

LiSe, that pattern is interesting. The order matches a little feng shui diagram I have here of how energy moves in a room. Probably because it *is* a feng shui diagram, right?

I wish Dharma were around - the idea of using spreads with hexagrams seems like another good way to get at the similarities/differences between Tarot and I Ching. Using the questioning approach of one with the imaginative content of the other. Mick, any thoughts?

Hi everybody,

The discussion is getting interesting down here.Hilary I got 57 to 18 when asking about the causes for my frustration some time ago, so the other way round should be a lovely time for you. Lise, you should have a cyber monument here for your work and enthusiasm. I want to try your 9 hexagrams method for Big questions.

That´s what my yarrows say about next year for everyone here :

DECISION

Year 2003
sublime and Iniciative.
Sublimely prosperous and smooth.
Favorable and Beneficial.
Steadfast and Upright.

Favorable to cross great rivers.
Favorable to see the great person.
No fault.

Unfavorable to use arms.
Full of nourishment.
Begining: Good fortune.
End: Nothing not advantageous.

Happiness below Heaven.
Tao fulfilled, beings fulfilled.

Actually 2003 season righteously great in fact!.

Willow,

You said, "I wish Dharma were around - the idea of using spreads with hexagrams seems like another good way to get at the similarities/differences between Tarot and I Ching. Using the questioning approach of one with the imaginative content of the other. Mick, any thoughts?"

Thanks for thinking of me. Well, I wish Dharma were around as well!

I like the idea of hexagram spreads but it sounds a little too much for me at the moment.

I know that there are I Ching card decks but the idea of putting hexagrams in a spread has never really appealed to me.

I find that there is so much content in an individual I Ching reading, taking into account nuclear hexagrams as well.

Having said that, I'm very interested in linking the I Ching and Tarot and I use a system of correspondences between the Tarot trumps and the I Ching hexagrams worked out by Karen Witter. I'm posting one of these per month on another thread here (just search for Karen Witter).

So I suppose that when I do a Trumps-only spread - which I definitely would do for crucial issues - then that's the closest I get to working with hexagrams in combination.

For Tarot readings, there's a 7-card spread that I like to use but most of the time, I work out a spread with the querent to suit their question and to try to gain some insight into their situation.

Best wishes to everyone for 2003,

Mick

Hi everyone

My hexagram for 2003 is 34 (Power of the Great) changing to 7 (the Army). Sounds like another year uphill -- 2002 was totally exhausting -- but I'm remaining positive.

Hope everyone has a great year ahead.

Hi all,

I've been following this thread because it is something I do each year. Never have tried anything with Tarot cards and I am kind of spooked by the "final fate" feeling I got years ago from people I knew who did Tarot. I like Feng Shui though, and have implemented a few changes in our home to follow those guidelines. So my throw for the year 2003 was 56 changing to 35. This is the first year I have thrown would end in progress so I am actually quite pleased. And I know what the first part is...I recently returned to work in a situation where I seem to experience a little left over 'influence' from someone I used to be close to, but don't feel anything for now except wary friendship.

May you all have a wonderful year - I love your discussions, even though I don't join in much.

I have put the pattern of the 9 BaGua cards on my website, and I added as example the answer to the question ?how about Clarity in 2003?. There you can see what the pattern looks like, but here is part of the explanation.

********
Nr. 5, center, trigram earth: FIELD the earth you sow in, the spot where you are, the stuff you or this situation are made of. The essence of the question. A summary of the whole circle.
Here I got hexagram 3: germs coming to the surface, the start of something new.

Nr. 3: center left, the beginning, trigram Thunder. START How to win possibilities, what can you bring in as energy, direction. How much energy has your project, is it renewing, surprising.
Hexagram 28: crossing the big mountain, ability to go on when things change and to cope with mistakes and faults. Strength to support your project.

Nr. 4, top left, trigram wind. GROWTH or IDEAL Your ideals, how does it grow in your mind, can you use your intuition, feel how to go about. Do you have a blueprint in your mind of what you want, do you oversee it so you will not get lost in details. Can you win others for your plans.
Hex. 30: clarity and form.

Nr.9, top center, trigram fire. MANIFESTATION Can you make this conscious, visible, tangible. Giving things or yourself a position, or using your position for its establishing. Will it shine. Making your ambitions come true, finding a place in the world, acquiring acknowledgment of fame.
Hex. 13: a group of people who are one.

Nr. 2, top right, trigram earth. SURROUNDINGS The influence of others, restrictions or help. Your influence on them, what do you summon. Can you receive their gifts and are you fertile so things can grow. Can you offer a rich surrounding to others.
Hex. 22: beauty, the energy to blossom out.

Nr. 7, center right, trigram lake. DISTANCE Judge what you do or cause. See what others do or fail to do. Cooperate or delegate. Objectivity but also projections and emotions. Form an opinion, judge your feelings. What will the oracle change. Do you have too many or too few illusions.
Hex. 6: do not try to judge or fight all by yourself, ask for other views too

Nr. 4, bottom right, trigram heaven. CREATIVITY Your own contribution, what can you or want you to do with this, how will you make it look and how will it express you. How big is your ability to produce, what can you change, what is the personal identity you give to it. Do you have self-confidence.
Hex. 13 again this group of people.

Nr. 1, bottom center, trigram water. DEPTH What can your inner self gain or add. How much wisdom is in you or will you find. How will this connect your feelings with past, present, people. Your fears and deepest cravings. The growth of your being, what do you throw in, what will you go through. Can you evaluate the other side of the coin, and accept it or not. What is difficult about this situation.
Hex. 14 Blessings from heaven, big harvest.

Nr. 8, bottom left, trigram mountain. RESULT Profits, what is in it for the future. What can you invest in it and will you gain. Will your individuality grow through this.
Hex. 26. At last the huge financial results Hilary deserves? But I never thought of the ?big bulls? of hex.26 to act as big piggybanks.
*********

I cast the hexagrams with SanShan, so some had changing lines. 28 to 47, 13 (at place 6) to 25, 6 to 35 and 26 to 34. This lay-out is not supposed to take any changing lines into account, but I thought they might be interesting. The ?start? (28 to 47) seems not to be very easy. At place 7 (hex.6) there might be contention, but its change to 25 makes it a lot better.

Between every two hexagrams there are ?roads?, which have to do with the places they occupy. The road from trigram fire (occupied here by hex.30) to mountain (here hex.26) is 36. So if you want the big accumulation of 26, you can reach it from the people of 13 at the top by hiding your light. Or from the beginning (hex.28) along the road of hex.11. Or from the clarity of your ideals (hex.30, top left) along hex. 30. In this last case, you will have to make your ideals extra bright, 2x30!
I removed the plan of these roads from the website, because this is the invention of Han Boering, and I don?t want someone to find it there and steal it. Here in the list it is different. I will ask him how he thinks about it himself.

Forgot to upload the pictures, but now they are there. I also added the floor plan of the Ming Tang temple, which is probably the origin of the bagua. At http://www.anton-heyboer.org/i_ching/structures

Nine hexagrams obviously is too much for most people. But I cast them only for real important, long-range questions, and in the course of weeks, 9 hexagrams are fine. Every hex applies to a special part of the situation, and this way there are connections between these parts. This lay-out shows the roads from one aspect to any other.

SanShan is a very good I-Ching program, which gives excellent readings (and meanings of all characters and a lot more). See www.sundialler.com

Yes, #29 for the year...

More than a quarter of it gone by now, and indeed it's been one thing after another after another.

Just wanted to let folks know I'm here. I don't have the time now to read everything, or to be here consistently, but it's great to see new people arrive, conversations go on...as I bob up to the surface from time to time...
