I asked the Yi what would happen if i told new
business associate all the background - and got
16

I read somewhere that 16 unchanging can mean
an emphatic NO can anyone verify that?

thanks H

Base hexagrams open up a topic for conversation, they never speak "emphatically" though the individual lines might.

16 traditionally speaks to getting good help, setting down the rules and order of business, etc which is what you appear to be doing.

Some writers caution of getting over-enthusiastic about a situation or a proposed solution, which is common sense.

I disagree. If you are in a tizz and get 52 unchanging its message is pretty emphatic so unchanging hexagrams can certainly be emphatic in a reading

16 unchanging however only speaks to me of preparatory ideas and so on...nothing solid

It depends upon the question and whether the reader feels its message to be emphatic in its message....theres no objective standard. I have known many times an unchanging hexagram has seemed emphatic......how it is possible to say noone experiences unchanging hexagrams as emphatic I don't know .....

Probably if you were daydreaming all day long about someone 16 unchanging might be an emphatic 'hey dreamer'...If you were making plans about your business 16 unchanging might be 'hey there you are full of ideas and enthusiasm for getting ready to make your business expand' ... but what you do with that is up to you. However there could well be occasions where 16 is received as an emphatic answer to ones question.

Traditional texts as translated by Cleary:

Hex 16: "It is beneficial to set up rulers and mobilize the army."

Hex 52: "Stilling the back, one does not find the body. Walking in the garden, one does not see the person. There is no fault."

Maybe it's me, but these do not strike me as particularly "emphatic." I agree that when one is in a state hexes can seem to speak rather emphatically, but this would be more a situation of you bringing meaning to the hexes rather than the contrary.

As has often been observed here, IC is often a mirror of your inner state. The symbols, ultimately, don't "really" mean anything, any more than the letter-forms we use to enter text have any intrinsic meaning. Meaning is culturally agreed upon and, in the case of IC interpretations, conditioned on one's emotional/spiritual state and level of understanding. One might indeed find 16 to speak "emphatically" to a specific circumstance, but it would not be particularly fruitful to try to extend that interpretation to all situations. That road leads to worst excesses of Tarot readings with their "dark men" and "fair women."
