I have been thinking about 63 and 64, though I am a long way from writing about them. I wondered if anyone has some thoughts about why 63 is After Completion and 64 is Before Completion. Obviously as a pair they deal with Completion as a whole. And equally obviously to the western mind, they are purposely transposed from what we would see as a logical order. Any thoughts?

Hi Wanderer-
They are also purposely transposed from what the Chinese would see as a logical order. My thought would be that the authors wanted you to think about that a lot.

Wanderer,
someone here, I think, came up with an explanation that made sense to me. It is that "Before Completion" means "Does not exist yet." That could explain why it is the last of the 64 hexagrams, don't you think?

Wheels Within Wheels

Hexagram 63 speaks of getting across, finishing something, but not yet...its a transitonal hexagram often received when one is asking about the future of something and no one single hexagram can accurately portray all that will happen and all the stages of change that will occur.

Hexagram 63 is the larger cycle of time, a period of years possibly.

For example, Lets say you ask about a romantic relationship and what will happen: you receive Hexagram 63-the Sage is getting ready to set forth in detail as you begin to ask about the events or HExagrams that will make up this cycle.

(Usually 6 divinations are done-on the 7th Hexagram comes return but it might go right back into to Hexagram 63 again. There is no set rule.)

So from six divinations you see that : 1)these people will marry,2) move to a different country, 3)have a child,4} wounding and injury-they argue 5)have a break up, and 6) things will fall apart.

Usually detailed, multiple divinations taking some time should be done. When doing this, in intervals, you will continue to receive Hexagram 63. As time flows, you will receive changing lines higher and higher up in the hexagram.

When a new stage arrivess, a totally new beginning you will receive Hexagram 64.

So Hexagram 64 is rather easy, Its time to move on, its done here, your job/mission has been accomplished. New cycle-it now Hexagram 64, Before Completion, time to move one. Its that short stage before a new grand cycle sets in.

I see Hexagram 63 as a big wheel, a larger cycle of time. The readings in between talk about the smaller cycles of change. Wheels with wheels so to speak.

After completition, Hexagram 63 is the END of the former cycle. Before completion, Hexagram 64 is the BEGINNING of a new cycle

this insight has made my divinations cogent and cohesive and allowed predictions far into the future and with greater detail.

Hi Sun,

You're fantastic in your insights on the Yi and always teach me something new. Now I must try out your 6 divinations since I sometimes do draw one of these hexagrams. More recently - 64!

Best for your Quest
