I drew this line many times about problems in my life, and find it really frustrating. It's particularly confusing when I ask what to do:

'Well is dredged, no drinking.
This makes my heart ache.
It can be used to draw water,
With the king's clear vision,
People together accept its blessing.'

So what? How to apply it in my life?
I'm the poor well, destined to be let down?
I'm the king who should have clear vision? Then how? If I knew I didn't consult the I Ching.
Or what?

To be honest I see a scary fatalism in this line: the neglected well makes your heart ache but all depends on the fool king.

Hello Mary,
I do not know if it is a line for a sentimental relationship or a professional question, so...
My hypothesis : you are the well that has value but the king (your king or your professional situation) does not see it, does not realize it ... Indeed, it is frustrating because it is positive but the king does not commit ...

Line 29.3 refers to a situation in which you are not free. I wouldn't say it's a scary fatalism because there's no breakup, it may be momentary : "disagreeable as it may be to remain in such a situation, we must wait until a way out shows itself" (wengutartarie).

In The Judgment of 48, there is an important piece of information: "If you are almost in the water but the rope is not yet fully descended or the jug breaks, it brings misfortune." This means that there is a time of maturation... You will probably have more details with other hexagrams.

This line describes misunderstanding - It is hard to be misunderstood. It is hard to be mistaken. Sometimes, it might be you the one who misunderstands.

As if it wanted to say: See, it's all there, fresh water. A bit of patience, and see if your rope and jugs are all right, and your judgement.

@Matali ;

I've received this line several times about different problems.

Maybe all these hexagrams evoke the same situation, but it's not negative at all... I think it takes patience in this connection source of good fortune.

Well, if the question is, 'What can I do about this problem?' and the answer is

'Well is dredged, no drinking.
This makes my heart ache.
It can be used to draw water,
With the king's clear vision
People together accept its blessing.'

...then I think it is saying there's actually not nearly so much to do as you might think. Maybe you are running round with a shovel trying different places to dig, all caught up in the fears and insecurities of being without water. But the well is already there; the water is ready to drink. All that's needed is for the one in charge (could that be you?) to recognise what's in front of them.

The great thing about getting 48 The Well is that it demonstates the process of personal connection to something greater than ourselves. This connection is always there for us, it is never ending, and helps us in all sorts of unspoken ways to refresh and replenish. The noble one when walking in Jing-Land is encouraged to be of service to others helping themselves and help those around them. Sometimes though the rope pulling up the refreshing water does not reach all the way to the water or the jug used to raise the water breaks. When this occurs life becomes difficult and we have enough trouble just looking after ourselves without being able to be a benefit to or nourish those around us.

To apply 48.3 in your life you have to recognise that you have much to offer from your well but are saddened that no one else seems to want to drink from it. In line 3 you are ar a threshold where opportunities to better utilise your recently dredged well are about to become clearer.

You don't have to do anything to make this happen, just be watchful and recognise when the time is right. You are not the King who should have clear vision now but the King who can be aware that the clarity is moving, like a blessing, invisibly towards them.

Good Luck

Hilary;

I'm still the one running wih the shovel, not recognising the well, or the way to reach its clear water.
But your description of someone in a 48.3 situation reminded me of a verse by Rumi turned to a popular saying in Persian:

We, the thirsties, search for water while it's there in the jug;

We look for the beloved, while she is in our own home.

Hi Mary
Your Rumi based saying reminded me of another of Rumi's pearls. His poem beginning
"This being human is a guest house"...............

Apparently, shovels come free of charge with every room and many of the maps showing how to find the clear water have been taken by previous residents.

................and he finishes "Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond."
Take Care
