Hello

Sometime in the beginning of November 2013, I put my name down for a barbeque. It’s the Xmas BBQ to end the year hosted by three friends and acquaintances. The BBQ is to be held at a riverside park not far from my place on Sunday, the 15th of December, 2013, starting at 9 am in the morning.

On the 19th of November, 2013, I consulted the I-Ching asking, “What is the outcome of going to the Xmas BBQ?”

Throwing the dice, I received Hex 6.2.6 with the Judgement saying -

Conflict; you have sincerity
Even though obstructed,
Stop halfway – good fortune;
Follow to the end – misfortune.
It is of benefit to see the great man,
But not to cross the great river.

Line 2
Hex 6.2 – One cannot continue the conflict. Retreating, he goes home. Three hundred families in his town will avoid disaster.

Line 6
Hex 12.6 – Stagnation ends. First there is stagnation, later good fortune.

Final
Hex 45 – Gathering. Success.
The king attends the temple.
It is of benefit to see the great man;
This leads to success. Continuance benefits.
Offering a great sacrifice leads to good fortune.
It benefits one to go somewhere.

From the above, the original hexagram states, “Stop halfway and NOT to cross the great river”. Originally, the BBQ is to be catered for 30 people. But because it is the end of the year, it is opened to anyone in the meet-up group. To date, it has grown to 65 people and counting. I only know some of the people there, and from previous outings, I have encountered some of the people who are chatty, quiet, abrupt, snobbish, and boastful.

After reading the Judgement, I made up my mind to give it a miss. I shall let the host(s) know sometime in the first week of December. Even though the final hexagram ends in Hex 45 Gathering, the “conflict” predicted in the beginning (Hex 6 Line 2) will definitely leave a “bad taste” in the mouth at the end. Since it’s a Xmas BBQ to end the year, it is supposed to be joyous and fun.

A couple of days ago, I received an email telling everyone to state their names and what food or stuff he/she is going to bring in the form attached. Last night (28 Nov 2013), however, I have a dream. In the dream, a person came up to me and asked whether I am going to the BBQ. I replied no. He then said that everyone is going. So, come on down, the water is fine. And don’t forget to bring the form along.

Query:
(1) I-Ching consultation is communication between the conscious and the unconscious. Dream is the sub-conscious. Am I right?

(2) If the I-Ching commented not to go while the dream said to go, which is right?

(3) Why is there a contradiction between I-Ching and dream?

Cheers

It's a barbeque...why would you turn it down just because of an I Ching answer about it. I mean it's just a social event....what is the worst that can happen ? if you don't enjoy it you can leave.

The reading may refer to your attitudes.....whatever, but do you need to rely on full scale predictions just to go to a barbeque ? If so, don't, it will ruin your social life.

The answer 6.2.6>45 merely may show you feel conflicted about going, and that maybe if you go you don't stay too long if you don't like it. But please don't shut things down through an answer you don't even fully understand. The I Ching is not a machine that churns out cast iron predictions....you jumped to conclusion it said 'don't go' but actually as it's just a barbeque it hardly matters if you go or not except if you don't go you deprive yourself of a social experience that may have been interesting/fun/pleasurable.....and if it isn't have some food and drink and go home.

There is no contradiction. The dream has saved you from your misinterpretation of and over reliance on the I Ching.

If I had this reading, and all my work mates were going, I'd go, have as much fun food and drink as possible and then if I got unhappy I'd go home :)

What is there to lose by going ? Nothing.

What is there to lose by not going ? Well who knows. You may have fun, you may meet someone nice to talk to....anything can happen. You will never know if you don't go. Maybe it will be as you thought and you won't much like it, but does that matter ? It's just an experience .

I-Ching consultation is communication between the conscious and the unconscious. Dream is the sub-conscious. Am I right?

There is no 'right' here. Everyone sees it differently. I don't think I Ching is communication from the unconscious, I think it's an Oracle. Dreams serve like Oracles too. One might say it's all from same source. In the end doesn't matter where we think answers from....but there is no 'right' view on it

I'm not seeing a contradiction between IC answers and dreams, any more than a bass drum contradicts a piccolo.

If you ask 3 before doing 2, how is that going to make any sense?

If you require a strict yes or no answer from a dream, you may get one. But I don't usually steer my dreams, I let the dreams steer me, show me what this looks like, give me a way to connect with that energy. That's how I do IC readings too. It's the same energy, but with it's own face, culture, time, place and background.

The stories are more alike than different. Campbell says just one story with a thousand faces. Surely it's not shocking that the IC and dreams are two of them?

I made up my mind to give it a miss.

This isn't the first time.

After that, the group went to a nearby restaurant for lunch while I headed home.

If you want to know what is in your unconscious mind, pay attention to the pattern of your life.

. . . I have encountered some of the people who are chatty, quiet, abrupt, snobbish, and boastful.

Humanity is flawed. If we were perfect, we would not be in this realm. If you looked deeper, you would see their excellencies. My opinion is that you should attend the BBQ. If for no other reason,

Thanks to you trojan, sooo and pocossin for your point-of-views.
There are many outings being lined up in the weeks to come and I'm participating.
So, whether to go to the BBQ is not really important. I'll be seeing them again next year.
Anyway, wishing you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.
Cheers.
