Daode jing: A Guide is by esteemed scholar of Daoism Livia Kohn, is a fairly comprehensive overview of Laozi's seminal Daodejing (a.k.a. Tao-te-ching by Lao-tzu). Kohn covers the Daodejing text, its concepts, how it was used in different contexts (e.g. social, political, religious, etc.), and how it has spread around the world. Very informative, accessibly written, and affordable. Though it doesn't dip into the Yijing waters in any depth, I think Clarity people will find reading it will expand their understanding of theYi's cultural and philosophical context.

I've written a longer review of Kohn here on Contemplating I Ching.

Oxford University Press publishes two series of guides to sacred texts. One series is aimed at those teaching college-level classes. The other series is sacred text guidebooks aimed at students. On the Yijing, they have the excellent Teaching the I Ching by Redmond and Hon (I've reviewed here), and will shortly issue the companion student book: The Yijing: A Guide, by Joseph A. Adler. The blurb says:

* "Demystifies" a text that has intrigued and attracted users and readers for two millennia
* Provides an introduction to the Yijing for general readers, practitioners of divination, students, and scholars
* Succinctly outlines the history of the Yijing's use and interpretation, while discussing its perennial popularity

They also have The Analects: A Guide by Erin M. Cline
