Driving along recently my attention was drawn to the dashboard and the mileage that the car covered had done - 110111 (mine is not a new car!!)

Six numbers..... ones and zeros.... a chance for divination thought I.
So now the quandry. Do I start with the left hand one or the right hand one as the bottom line?

In Clarity's free online reading, it's left-to-right. For instance, hexagram 14 changing at lines 4 and 6 is written "777989" in the resulting url for that reading, up in the address bar. (You could cast a reading of your own to test it out.)

Thanks Liselle.
So the answer is Hex 10. I've just got to find a question to go with it now.

Here is another way to look at it. Text is written left to right, but numbers are built right to left, small to large. (Think of how the odometer got to that number, starting with 000001.) Hexagram lines are also built small to large, bottom to top. So if numeric digits correspond to hexagram lines, 110111 (a number) is hexagram 9, the equivalent of 777877 (text).

Thanks Russell- it's good to have differnt perspectives. I have played with both yours and Liselle's approaches and others besides. The ease that moving the number sequence through 90 degrees to stack it in a hexagram pile felt more natural when producing Hex 9.

So I can have Hex 9 using 'your' methodand my stacking method and 10 if I use the Liselle/Clarity method. Whichever I choose, I still have the dilemma of finding the question to fit the answer.

I'd even played with primary hex being 9 (10) and resultant was 10 (9) with moving lines 3 and 4 so everything is in place waiting that elusive question.

Think I'll stick to using my marbles and asking the question first .

9 and 10 are Pairs (contrasts), though, and 10 follows 9 in the Sequence. So another way to think of it might be that your odometer gave you both 9 and 10 as a pair. That's how Stephen Karcher conceives of it anyway, if I understand correctly - that when you cast a hexagram, you've really cast the pair it's part of. Pairs are fundamental; the two hexagrams in a pair are inseparable.

(I can't explain it more than that.)

You could also take a look at the text for the Pair and Sequence. In this case (from Hilary's translation):

Pair: 'Small Taming is alone; Treading does not come to rest.'

Hilary's commentary:

- from 9's point of view: "Seeking to relate to the power that will make greater things possible, first you prepare alone and learn its nature; later, you may develop the capacity to move with it constantly."

- from 10's point of view: "The small farmer of Hexagram 9 worked alone, seeking some relationship with the power that would make greater things possible. Now, following that power that ‘does not pause’ (Hexagram 1), you are constantly in motion."

Sequence: 'Things are tamed, and then there are the rituals, and so Treading follows.'

Hilary's commentary: "First you learn the rules for working with great power – inwardly or outwardly – and then you can move with it more freely and harmoniously."

Maybe something in all of that will eventually ring a bell?

But as you're carefully pointing out, there wasn't a question, so this isn't really a reading. It's more of a synchronicity, a sign, if it's anything at all. Everything we notice isn't necessarily filled with Important Meaning, after all, or we'd be driven crazy. So maybe keep it in mind loosely, but don't worry about it too much?

How about:
If you don't respect the dangerous nature of driving that requires constant focus, that's ok.
Because even though the tiger prefers live food, it would still happily snack away on roadkill.

Ding Dong

Thanks. The pairing perspective was something I'd forgotten about and the synchronicity aspect makes good sense and kind of negates the need for a question. Perhaps the speedo just beamed me a signal and was making sure that his observation on the way things are right now for me would be noticed. A general overview rather than a response to a specific question.

Hmmm !!
That makes a good general overview of life I think.
