I'm looking more carefully at zhong1 in 1.3.

I translate zhong1 as 'completing', with a meaning of 'in the end' or 'when things come to or are brought to completion'. But that meaning doesn't really seem to fit in 1.3 because of the mention of 'evening' in the text. I mean, it would read something like: "The jun1 zi3, in the end completely creative, is wary in the evening." My problem with this is the inconsistency here between 'in the end' and 'in the evening', cuz it seems to me that 'in the evening' is the determining factor in the sequence of things.

So how about: "The jun1 zi3, the whole day completely creative, is wary in the evening"?

What do you think about each of these meanings for zhong1 in 1.3?

I think it comes closest to "up to the end". The whole day, right to its end. And then evening comes with its own demands. Not good to go on being busy, evening and night ask for wariness. Every time has its own demands and the Junzi listens to the time. I think that is one of the themes of Hexagram 1, following the time.

I think that following the time is built into every hexagram, not just Hex 1. Thanks, Lise - I think you might be right about 'right up to the end' - it works, and it's elegant.

WIth the above in mind, note that line position 3 is influenced in general by characteristics of hexagram 15 and so a generic focus on issues of modesty, avoid extremes or more so reduce them, fill in the lows, flatten the highs.

IC+ 1.3

Line 3

"One must be wary of being awed by one's own power. This perception can be extremely destructive and must be exorcised. No harm."

The others:

Line 1 [control is hex 24 and so a focus on beginning, 'new boy in town' issues]

"Although having potential, one must must lie low (hidden) for now."

Line 2 [control is hex 07, focus on uniformity, external source of command etc]

"One is noticed, but to go further it would be advisable to get some guidance."

Line 4 [control is hex 16 and its focus on enthusiasm and what could be, plan etc]

"If one enjoys oneself in a seductive environment, no harm."

line 5 [control is hex 08, issues covering attraction of the ruler/court/'sun' etc]

"One may be riding high but one needs some guidance[direction]."

line 6 [control is hex 23, focus on pruning issues etc]

"One has become somewhat overbearing and is losing one's way. Repent." (IOW prune the excess etc)

Ace summary. Would you mind if I referred to what you put in this post in other threads in this forum?

Go ahead. Then comes the summing of lines - e.g. lines 1 and 6 cover a control of hex 27 (and so infrastructure) where we have (a) quality control of 23 with the (b) beginning focus of 24 gives us 27 as control and so issues of the beginning and quality control - the infrastructure, skeletal form, of 01 is described by analogy to 28... but there are no comments on such since the original limit comments to single lines (the hierarchic format of analysis of hexagrams with each line representing a level in the hierarchy. Overall we are dealing with XOR properties and so the first form of analysis of hexagrams, their structure, spectrum etc - and so the 23-ness of 01 is described by hex 43, the 'pruning', the cutting back to the core, is exaggerated to become spreading the word, over-promotion of that core, seeding, sell of self etc - you can see the over-bearing-ness in this and so the associated line comment covering having gone to far where the pruning has turned into its opposite - seeding, cut back, contracting, becomes expanding)

The wave method of analysis may be more useful in understanding the summing of hexagrams and XOR dynamics:
