Hello ,

I need help in deciding on which 2 month program to send my child(5 yrs) for the summers . Both are very good programs and she has been accepted by both. The reason I am sending her is that she has extreme social issues and does not have any friends and does not knw how to have conversations. These program are supposed to help children achieve socialization who have these deficits

program 1 - she will be in a class with other social kids with a 1:1 aide who will work on her social goals
I did iching and asked how will this program be for my child
i got 41.3.4 chnging to 14

program 2- she will be paired with a child who is similar to her with an aide i.e 2:1 ratio and both the kids will be included in a class with typical social kids.
I did iching and asked how will this program be for my child
I got 34.1 changing to 32

Pl help me decide.

Thanks,
Val

I am surprised By your answer and callousness in your answer. I am definate that you are not a parent that is why you are not able to understand my question or mayne live in a "oh my children are so perfect world" that you are not able to relate to pain and trials of parents who have children with special needs.

My daughter had pddnos and is in the spectrum which does not give her the ability to make friends. THESE PROGRAMS WILL AGGRESSIVELY WORK ON THERAPY AND INTRODUCE HER TO DIFFERENT WAYS TO TALK AND INTERACT WITH PEERS.

I have tears in my eyes right now and anger towards people like you who do not understand AND ARE CRUEL. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND PLEASE DO NOT HURT PEOPLE WHO ARE UNDERGOING THIS PAIN BY YOUR INSENSITIVE ANSWERS AND REMARKS. pL STAY IN YOUR PERFECT WORLD

Dear Val,

Your first choice offers a program with a 1:! ratio.
41.3 seems to comment on the positive benefits of a 1:1 program.
41.4 seems to affirm that this arrangement will be very helpful for gently weaning the child from familiar but limiting relationships (being at home with just mom!) and readying the child to make new friends.

The second choice offers a 2:1 ratio.
As you received 34.1 for the second which warns about getting into something that could be overwhelming at the beginning and since this is only a two month program - barely long enough to get passed the beginning...

I suggest you go with option number 1.

Have you investigated bachfloweressences for shyness? Also amazon.com carries arts and crafts projects by a company called "Alex." Doing art projects together can help a kid get comfortable being with others.

Best wishes to you and your child.
Rosada

Hello Capri,

It was obvious to me that your girl has some kind of PDD, reading the description you gave in your firts post. I'm only replying to express my support to you and your family.Having worked with children in the spectrum, i know how hard it is for parents to feel that they cannot communicate with their own child.

Children in the spectrum are not "shy"! Often, they are actually trying to approach others and make friends but they simply don't know "how to". Their attempts to socialize might seem awkward and peers can easily turn them down as "strange" or even "stupid". Intelligence has nothing to do with it. They can have an average to high IQ and yet they lack the basic communication skills such as reading facial expressions or understanding the changes in the tone of the voice when someone is sad, happy or angry..Therefore, social interaction, which for most of us comes gradually but naturally from age 0, for them is a puzzle they need to figure out.. I will not go on with this because this is not a mental health forum but i think it is important that people are informed before they they start expressing "judgments".

I am sure that you are already getting professional help for your girl. I just wanted to write about my experience as the "social interaction" part is the exact object of my work with these children. In the past few years I've witnessed a number of children growing up and working hard to overcome their difficulties. It needs patience and it might take long ( i don't know your case so i can't be spesific), but I can reassure you that if you give your child professional help and support in a constant basis, she will get better at coping with the world.. Changes might be slow and gradual, and sometimes you migth lose your courage but it is certainly worth it!

I find the 2 month programms to be a nice idea. I didn't write about your reading since I think rosada put it really nice. Option 1 does sound better.

I just wanted you to know that i understand what you're talking about. Give a kiss to your girl from me! I hope everything goes well..

Love,
A.

Thanks a lot Rosada for the reading insight and help. I have made my decision on program 1.

Angeleyes- Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. It is difficult and we are doing everything we can for our little girl. I am hopeful that this 2 month program will help a lot.

Luv

Val
