direction of friendship: 34.1.2 > 62

What direction is this friendship currently going?
I asked this question with a hopeful(future/positive) slant, rather than realistic(recent past/negative).

34.1.2 > 62

I've looked at the individual lines and the hexs individually, but it's hard to relate them into one reading..

If it's 'great power', it seems to be in some kind of dispersion suggested by 62..?

Also I'm wondering that when a question like this is about a friendship, is the 'great power' then referring to the friendship/interaction, or to one or other of the people involved?

Maybe someone who's more familiar with these hexs could give me an interpretation..

I have seen H34 referred to as "The Taming Power of the Great"; i.e., using power to get things under control. Your own is what you have control over.

Realize that the direction that the friendship goes in, is partly up to your own input and reactions. Many times I have told myself to not be negative, to not be too forceful or demanding about my opinions, only to backslide and begin some big conflict.

I think boundaries and guidelines are required, then, to prevent messy conflicts and out of control feelings (as stated, I speak on this from experience!)

62: Preponderance of the Small:
In hexagram 62 an emphasis on detail and over exaggerated conduct is sometimes required by those in positions of influence to help maintain traditional perspectives. This emphasis helps to maintain the 'ideal' in the eyes of the people. However, these behaviours can be used to hide a weak individual in that they work as a facade and can be used as an excuse for delays in decision making.

'Taming Power of the Great' seems to be another hex(26), or maybe some translations differ on the names.. But I see what you're saying in that maybe the 62 could have a 'taming' effect on the 34. It seems that this advice goes with a lot of readings anyway, saying don't go too far etc.

Yeah sometimes people just have bad days or whatever. Something that happened recently though has made me realise how something seemingly small can suddenly snowball into quite a big disagreement, so maybe that's what the reading was pointing to in some way.

Oh, you are correct! Wilhelm calls 34, "The Power of the Great". Yes, H62 is a warning to focus on little things, small ways of relating, rather than big, overarching themes. I know too well how little disagreements can escalate. Another good translation/commentary is the Ewald Berkers on Eclectic Energies Yi Jing, you can enter the hexagrams in directly, and the changing lines, online , to see their text.:bows:
