Calling any iPhone / iPad user... do you have to take action to update 3rd party apps (like Zoom), or do they update themselves in the background? (I need to get this clear in my own mind before I try to advise other people!)

Depends. There’s a setting for it. My wife’s phone never updates until she manually triggers it, for some reason. My iPhone updates automatically, but only after days or sometimes weeks. My Android phone seems to update faster.

Thanks! I wonder what will happen with Zoom, when the update is compulsory and it won't be possible to join meetings without it as of next month. I don't suppose you have Zoom installed?

Or - do you know whether the original default setting is to auto-update? (I'm sure the people I'm worried about won't have changed any settings.)

See - https://9to5mac.com/2017/06/05/ios-10-how-to-turn-automatic-app-updates-on-off/
  1. Tap on Settings
  2. Swipe down and tap on iTunes & App Store
  3. Tap the toggle next to Updates to turn it on/off
I think that auto-update is set to 'on' by default, but that's just my best guess (because that's the setting on my phone and I dont remember changing it, and I don't ever remember being asked if I want to update my apps). When it's about an iOS operating system updtate, I have to 'manually' do that - I think to make sure my phone is charged and I'm in the best place to get a large download to my phone.

Thanks. I'm hoping that's the case, as I'm sure the people I'm concerned about have never been near a 'Settings' button.
