14. Ta Yu / Possession in Great Measure

ABUNDANCE / OPULENCE / GREAT POSSESSIONS
Ta Yu indicates that, under the circumstances which it implies, there will be great progress and success.

GREAT SYMBOLISM
The trigram for heaven and that of fire above it form Ta Yu. The superior man, in accordance with this, represses what is evil and gives distinction to what is good, in sympathy with the excellent Heaven-conferred nature.

THE LINES
In the first line, undivided, there is no approach to what is injurious, and there is no error. Let there be a realization of the difficulty and danger of the position, and there will be no error to the end.
The topmost line, undivided, shows its subject with help accorded to him from heaven. There will be good fortune, advantage in every respect.
KING WEN'S EXPLANATION OF THE HEXAGRAM
In Ta Yu the weak line has the place of honor, is grandly central, and the strong lines above and below respond to it. Hence come its name of Ta Yu, having what is great.

The attributes of its component trigrams are strength and vigor with elegance and brightness. The ruling line in it responds to the ruling line in the symbol of heaven, and consequently its action is all at the proper times. In this way it is said to indicate great progress and success.

DUKE OF CHOU'S EXPLANATION OF THE LINES
The first line, undivided, of Ta Yu shows no approach to what is injurious.
The good fortune attached to the topmost line of Ta Yu arises from the help of Heaven
UPPER TRIGRAM: Li
CONCEPT: Brightness, Elegance, Clinging

FAMILY: Second Daughter
PART OF THE BODY: Eyes
SEASON: Summer

LOWER TRIGRAM: Ch'ien
CONCEPT: The Creative, Heaven
QUALITIES: Strong, Clever, Brave, Active, Solid, Decisive, Moving, Vital, Powerful, Untiring Strength, Ruler, Takes the Initiative
FAMILY: Father
PART OF THE BODY: Head

32. Hêng / Duration

PERSEVERANCE / DURATION
Hêng indicates successful progress and no error in what it denotes. But the advantage will come from being firm and correct; and movement in any direction whatever will be advantageous.

GREAT SYMBOLISM
The trigram representing thunder and that for wind form Hêng. The superior man, in accordance with this, stands firm, and does not change his method of operation.

KING WEN'S EXPLANATION OF THE HEXAGRAM
Hêng denotes long continuance. The strong trigram is above, and the weak one below; they are the symbols of thunder and wind, which are in mutual communication; they have the qualities of docility and motive force; their strong and weak lines all respond, each to the other: these things are all found in Hêng.

When it is said that Hêng indicates successful progress and no error in what it denotes; but the advantage will come from being firm and correct, this indicates that there must be long continuance in its way of operation. The way of heaven and earth is to be long continued in their operation without stopping.

When it is said that movement in any direction whatever will be advantageous, this implies that when the moving power is spent, it will begin again.

The sun and moon, realizing in themselves the course of Heaven, can perpetuate their shining. The four seasons, by their changing and transforming, can perpetuate their production of things. The sages persevere long in their course, and all under the sky are transformed and perfect. When we look at what they continue doing long, the natural tendencies of heaven, earth, and all things can be seen.

UPPER TRIGRAM: Chên
CONCEPT: Thunder, Exciting, Power

LOWER TRIGRAM: Sun
CONCEPT: Penetrating, Flexibility

Where does all that come from ? what are you quoting ? It's not from the online tool thing is it....can't be.

Be good to know where you are quoting from. It contains much irrelevant information about thighs and wotnot.

I've seen others post these huge chunks of stuff and I wonder where they are getting it from, why they post it. Can't be part of the online thing can it ?

This is about someone who does not committ, or show their affections.
Thanks

Hexagram 14, Great Possession

Key Questions

Given all you have, who will you be?
How can you affirm and support what is good?

Oracle

‘Great Possession.
From the source, creating success.’

Great Possession means you are rich – maybe in material goods, maybe in less tangible assets, like knowledge, wisdom, power, energy, talent or relationships. Whatever form it takes, you have something real and potent in your possession.

The Chinese word for ‘possession’ also means ‘there is’, so this is ‘great being’ as well as ‘great having’: what there is and what you are, as well as what you have. The ancient form of the character shows an outstretched hand, which may hold an offering: to possess is to offer; what you have is, by definition, what you can give.

And what you have and can give is great. This is pure potential: an opening to the source, and a promise of abundant energy ready to enter into circulation and become creatively active.

Image

‘Fire dwells above heaven: Great Possession.
A noble one ends hatred and spreads the good,
She yields to heaven and rests in her mandate.’

Sequence

Great Possession follows from Hexagram 13, People in Harmony:
‘Reaching out to people in harmony means beings truly return home, and so Great Possession follows.’

Changing Lines

Line 1

‘No interaction with what is harmful,
In no way at fault,
So that hardship is not a mistake.’

Line 6

‘From heaven comes help and protection.
Good fortune,
Nothing that does not bear fruit.’

Hexagram 32, Lasting

Key Questions

What inspiration are you making real in your daily life?
How can you continue on the same path, even as you adapt?
Who will you become by persevering in this?

Oracle

‘Lasting, creating success.
Not a mistake.
Constancy bears fruit,
Fruitful to have a direction to go.’

Whatever becomes part of the heart’s circling journey will last. We bind things – influences, ideas, people – into the fabric of our lives by integrating them into the daily round of our way of living, so that they are carried with us through change.

This is an active creative process, keeping the channels always open for exchange between inspiration and reality. Lasting tirelessly on your own path, whatever landscapes it travels through, is not a mistake.

What lasts bears fruit, not because you ‘arrive’ at some final destination, but because through all the changes you persevere in your intent and inspiration, and you are always finding ways to make it real.

Image

‘Thunder and wind: Lasting.
A noble one stands firm and does not change his bearings.’

Sequence

Lasting follows from Hexagram 31, Influence:
‘The way of husband and wife cannot fail to endure, and so Lasting follows.
Lasting means enduring.’

To me it sounds like whether he loves you or not --- it doesn't matter because you have "possession in great measure". Heaven will protect you and put you in the right relationship. If he is "Mr. Right" it will work out.

What is your take on the part of the first line that says, "hardship is not a mistake?"

This should be written as 14.1.6>32

Well it looks very steady. Big Having's Endurance/Lasting. It looks like something to hold and to keep yet you say he shows no affection or commitment ?

I see 14 as 'you have it' so it looks like you have his affection and commitment yet you don't. Do you think it's possible the two of you are misunderstanding one another ? Sometimes people think they are showing the utmost commitment by their actions whilst the other wants to hear the words. Sometimes the least affectionate people are in fact the most loving.

Anyway if you feel he shows no affection or commitment then this cast's a puzzle. However don't put too much weight on relationship readings, they change a lot so it's always good to stay close to what the other person is showing you.

14 can show the need to appreciate what you have. If you looked at all the ways he is good to you does that amount to something ? Or is he not good to you at all ?

"hardship is not a mistake."
I guess that means that the current pain, of his being unsure and not willing to spk of commitment nor to overly express affection to the degree that I wish for (which is why I questioned the I Ching) is "not a mistake" to endure...?

He is good and kind, but just doesn't know how or is not able to express it much, w hugs etc. He appears scared either of committing to me, or to expose himself to rejection... Or doesn't have the skills to express emotions yet. I think you are right, I want to hear the words, etc.

It appears to me he can be relied on, is a valuable person in your life already. But whether this is romantic I don't know. I don't know if you are already in a relationship with him or if he is just a friend or colleague who you would like to be closer to. Lines 1 and 6 move and I wonder if he feels he has given you all he can already and wants to go on as he is with you (32).

It's a nice reading for any relationship in that is seems to show something quite steady, with substance. That is what is there is genuine not just words, not just someone who says 'I love you I love you' and vanishes next day. It seems the opposite of that.

Thank you trojina.
He is a new, developing relationship, someone who goes slow, like me, in moving forward. My husband died 3 yrs ago, and so a new relationship is scary for me, as I develop trust w someone new. Thank you for your comments.
