Just a thought.
I remember reading on a thread here that someone had voiced concern that 'Yijing Reading' didn't show up on the menu when it opened and had to be scrolled down to. A simple solution might be to rename the category" A Yijing Reading' and that will put it to the top of the list and 'Synchronicity' will fall off the end of the radar instead.

I'm content with the way things are so have no axe to grind either way and I'm sure synchronity will find a way of showing itself whatever position it is allocated.

I agree it's annoying to have to scroll to access the one option that's hidden, especially when it's probably the most used. There's actually no need to do that, but unfortunately everyone might not know about it: click anywhere in the box, quickly press "y" to select Yijing Reading, then "Enter" to close the list. It acts like a keyboard shortcut, and eliminates scrolling and even a second mouse-point. It works really well.

Other possibilities might be:
  • Making the dropdown one line longer, so everything's visible. The "Entries" and "Style" menu lists (which, granted, aren't the same thing) are already longer than this one would be. Reading some more (see below), it sounds like it might not be this simple, because it has to do with screen resolution, and not just telling it to display 8 items instead of 7.
  • Make "Yijing Reading" the default (if that's possible to do, which I don't know). This might be what you mean by "rename." A possible drawback is if then people wouldn't realize there are 7 other options, although maybe recognizing a dropdown list and knowing how to use it is more universal than the y-Enter thing?

I see Hilary has said (a) it might have something to do with screen resolution, (b) the entire list is already / has always been visible to her, nothing hidden.

d) Drop down list in new entry area, where we define what entry type we want to create could be longer, so that I Ching readings aren't last and we don't need to scroll down to it.
What's your screen resolution? There is no scrolling for me. ('Yijing reading' is last just because the list is in alphabetical order.)

Hilary, what is your trick? I've had three different laptops since then, and "Yijing Reading" has been hidden on all of them two of the three (see the next post).

Current: 1920 x 1080
Immediately prior: 1366 x 768
Before that: 1280 x 800

All of those have been the recommended, default resolutions.

Well wait. If I'd read a little further:
No scrolling for me, either.
Hang on while I start up Resonance Journal on all three laptops...

Current (1920 x 1080): "Yijing Reading" is hidden
Immediately prior (1366 x 768): also hidden
One before that (1280 x 800): aha, on this one it's visible, no scrolling.

The only thing I can think of is that the one where it works is slightly more square (less landscape-y) than the other two. It looks that way to me, just visibly.

But anyway, it doesn't work on two of the three screens.

Another option (if possible) might be to make explicit keyboard shortcuts? If I open any list and see a letter somehow indicated in every item, or shortcuts spelled out like they are in the menu, then I automatically know keys are possible to use. No guessing/experimentation required. Also then there'd be one for every item. Right now keys only work when there's only one starting with a letter. ("G" and "L" don't work.)

Some options:

- Select an entry type - [keystroke]
Dream [d]
General Journal Entry [g]
Glossary [a]
Hexagram Translation

Line Translation [l]
Looseleaf Entry [o]
Synchronicity [s]
Yijing Reading [y]

Wouldn't need the square brackets if the keystrokes looked like a separate column, like the menu items:

or underlining, or bold, or something

- Select an entry type -
Dream
General Journal Entry
Glossary
Hexagram Translation
Line Translation
Looseleaf Entry
Synchronicity
Yijing Reading

- Select an entry type -
Dream
General Journal Entry
Glossary
Hexagram Translation
Line Translation
Looseleaf Entry
Synchronicity
Yijing Reading

Personally I like them in this order: (1) column (consistent with menus) - (2) underlining - (3) brackets (clear but messier) - (4) bold (maybe harder to see; maybe less standard)

I can confirm the 1366 x 768 resolution produces the hangover line. I'm wondering also if it's possible just to extend the number of the fields in the drop down menu, so that the length of the box shown is just bigger in whatever screen format is chosen.

Once again - will ask! Though we may have a better solution for this one.

Oops, didn't notice the anti-post-crossing alert, sorry. 👀 The top part was meant for My_key, and he already answered it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You mean make it so it'll be tall enough to accommodate any resolution? I wonder if there'd then be a bunch of empty space on some screens? Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world unless it's too ugly, I guess. Better than annoyingly-hidden items.

But I suspect this is in the category of things that we non-Justins can only guess about.

What's your screen resolution? It's the question Hilary asked originally, so it might be helpful for them to know.

A related issue is now that I have this splendid screen, I've run out of room with the interface text size. X-Large is readable because it's so crisp - this isn't a priority, at least in my opinion - but still, it's quite small for the highest setting.

Pasting it into XF ruins the true size Well I replaced the screen clip in order to mark the size information better, and that changed it. Anyway. You can at least see that it's smaller than Verdana 16:

Thank you for your suggestions, Liselle and my_key. We have been thinking of letting users set up a default entry type so the combobox is pre-populated on a new entry. However, I have also found a way to make the list longer to include the Yijing Entry type at the bottom of the list without scrolling.
Hope these measure will address the issue to everybody's satisfaction.
Thanks again,
Justin

Your solution works great for me Justin. Thanks.
Edit: I thought it had been introduced and all was bright and shiny new but I still have hidden Yi Jing.

It won't (and can't) take effect until the next update's released. Watch for a bright blue button to appear at the top of your Journal, announcing an update. (The button, in turn, can only be triggered when the software's closed and re-opened.)

Liselle is right ... the change won't take effect until the next update is released. Hopefully, this should be some time after Easter.
