What's going to happen to the economy in the time before the election?

(all tr. by Wilhelm-Baynes)
37.5 The Family > 22 Beauty
.5: “As a king he approaches his family. Fear not. Good fortune.
This sounds like a good thing, but the reality is that we are not governed by someone who approaches his family like a king, with love and virtue, but like a nasty, low animal -- with fear and divisiveness.
So I believe this is a sly way of saying: it would be good with a real leader, but with what we have... well, do the math.

But I wanted a clarification/restatement, in case I had misunderstood, and got:
15 Modesty, unchanging.
“Modesty creates success. The superior man carries things through.”
Ha. Same deal!
Here we have a leader who is the living, walking embodiment of the opposite of modesty, the definition of the INFERIOR man.
He does not carry things through.
Ok then.

But interesting that it’s phrased this way rather than saying straight-up misfortune.
Why are the readings phrased this way — what am I to take from that?
20 Contemplation, unchanging.
“Think about it.”
Ok, I will. And I'm going to post about it here.

Have any thoughts?

Maybe you are being guided to Contemplate your readings because the way you have interpreted them may not be the message the IC was sending. For example, you ask about the economy and turn your answer into a comment about Trump and then you reverse that answer into something else entirely and when you ask for clarification you twist that response too! How about just interpreting the hexagrams as straight forward answers?

What's going to happen to the economy before the election?
37.5 The economy will be fine and people will be taken care of.
22. The seemingly positive state of affairs may be an illusion, however.

Clarification?
15. Well, this doesn't mean we can be rash. Individuals will still need to budget reasonably of course.

Well, fair points, but I'm sticking to my interpretation. I've always found that good fortune is good fortune dependent on acting in accordance with the conditions specified. Guess we'll see what happens over the next year: time will tell which of the interpretation is correct :D

I thought similarly to Rosada, especially her point that you asked simply about "the economy," not "Trump's effect on the economy" or what effect the economy will have on the election, or anything like that. (Those could be separate questions.)

Maybe try seeing where you get with the reading if you think of "the economy" as a thing unto itself (like "What's going to happen with my baseball team during the rest of the season?"), or possibly if the reading is from the point of view of the economy ("Well, I, the economy, will....").

37.5 does mention "king," and I understand thinking "king" refers to Trump as president. But readings can be very metaphorical. "King" in a reading doesn't have to mean a human being, if you're not asking about one.

There's also some danger, with readings like this, that Yi's answer is perfectly accurate and understandable - if you're an I Ching-savvy economist. Sort of like asking, "Why do I have migraines?" and the resulting answer would make great sense to a doctor who can see the reading from the perspective of physiological systems.

This doesn't always happen, of course, but it might help to foreclose the possibility by asking something more like, "What should I understand about my migraines?"

(Having said that, I'm sounding like the question police (sorry  :bag:) and honestly your question seems fine to me. So the biggest thing might be just not to make the answer about Trump when you weren't asking about Trump.)

Actually, I wonder if that's what the 15uc might be getting at, to make your interpretation more authentically, integrally tied to your question?

After letting this reading evolve for awhile I'm now seeing it as a comment that

35.7 The economy will be determined by people who view Trump as their father/God/King and they trust that he will provide for them forever - which is ...

22. An illusion.

I think I interpreted the way I did because the question was about the economy before the election... so implicitly tying economics and politics together...

Interesting! I like that.

Further thoughts...

Maybe read the line as being a comment not so much describing how things will be before the election but how things are right now . Right now our economy is in the hands of someone who presents themselves as a King who can provide for the country but this is an illusion which can not last. So then here is where your sense the ic is being sly slips in because the inference is then that the illusion will be revealed as being an illusion by 2020. But it doesn’t describe catastrophe then, does it? Maybe the illusion continues even when everyone knows it’s all smoke. Hmm, guess we’ll know soon enough.
