Sergio:

Indeed.

Interesting and useful if we want to do a consult without reading the text of the YI, as it happens with the plum-blossom method.

We need to learn how to manage the trigram meanings using matrices as you have posted or reading the wings, the Great Image or the Treatise on the Trigrams.

About the Great Image, the Da Xiang (Big Ivory) I have the feeling that belongs to an old method based on throwing an 8-sided dice.

Old knucklebones (1) had 8 faces with values 0, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32. The whole, the sum of all sides vaults 63 1/2, almost 64.

Maybe the Big Ivory was an 8-sided dice used to get the outer and inner trigrams. Old chinese people had such type of dices.

Yours,

Charly

Sergio:

Of course there must have been another 6-sided dice only used for determining the moving line, the Little Ivory (Da Xiang).

Oh... and perhaps that would make sense of why two such different texts, Daxiang and Xiaoxiang, are both called 'xiang'.

I do often get the feeling that the Daxiang could be an independent oracle, casting light on the Zhouyi from a different angle. Love the idea of a separate dice oracle.

Hilary:

I believe that it is possible that when divination spreads among lesser nobility, consult technique could have evolved using the big and the little dices only for getting a line from one hexagram, reading the oracle form a simplified (maybe confucian) pocket book (the Xiao Xiang), with few freedom for interpreting results.

Later the Da Xiang could have been written for giving a key from the point of view of Gentlemen morality and old teachings related to geomancy and trigrams, more open ways for imagining meanings.

Say, «this is the moralizing aspect, now you have to proceed with the older teachings (the trigrams) if you know how to do it».

Did such things happened? Who Knows?

Charly
