The fifth level of this hexagram is a Sovereignty level which does not operate necessarily in a firm or directive way. At this Sovereign level of Kun is suggested an attitude of noble reserve, of impartial attention, of secret availability, of simple calmness and benevolence, depicted by a triple symbols : First the Robe, supple garment which envelops and protects; Second by below– not a display Robe, manifesting an outside status symbol, but hidden, in relation with the within, profound positioning, Invisible; Finally Yellow, colour of the Earth, of the Just Middle, of the centre which, as a hollow pivot, allows to consider all the aspects of a situation in order to harmonize them.

The Yellow Robe was so allegorical and familiar to the ancient Chinese that it immediately evoked the founding kings, whose garment was still for they knew how to rule using the Wu Wei ( the non acting). This conduct is highlighted here by a particularly rich appreciation, Fundamentally Open, characterising only two situations: Sun (41) and Ding (50), two moments where elimination and densification allow to undertake a qualitative leap. As in Da You (14), where the Sovereign level is occupied with the sole Yin line of the hexagram, the equilibrium between the Yang nature of the level and the Yin quality of the stroke permits the power of non acting (Wu Wei) to operate fruitfully.

裳 Robe : The ideogram, combining the general symbol for Clothing and the character To Value, To Make A Big Case Of, gives further proof that the Robe concerned is an under garment. The costumes worn by nobles during antiquity involved many robes worn one over the other. Confucius, for example, wore three in summer and four in winter.

黄 Yellow : Associated to the Earth and the Just Middle, synonymous of Exactness and Impartiality, Yellow is the Sovereign colour by excellence ( only the imperial buildings were allowed to have yellow roofs). Its worth, infinitely more positive than it is in the West, is particularly associated, in the context of the Yi Ching, to the Yin force, as is stated in the two superior levels of this hexagram. It represents the attitude which allows all realisations : To adapt in all directions without the need to impose.

元 Fundamentally : Mantic modulation underlined by the ideogram meaning : Beginning, Origin, Entirely.

吉 Open : Mantic modulation signalling a potential full moment where a fertile arrangement of the vital flux multiplies the possibilities of development.

元 吉 Fundamentally Open : One of the most favourable mantic formula of the entire Yi Ching. Fundamentally heightens the fertility of the arrangement described by Openness by emphasizing the scope of its possibilities of application, its vigour and its capacity to initiate in new situations.
