Dear all,

After completing my PhD at a top-ranked school, I have gone through six months of agony looking for a teaching/research post or postdoc. Despite all my very best efforts, enthusiastic recommenders, and one interview, I have failed to find more than casual hourly teaching at the university where I earned the degree. I have been demoralized by this dearth of opportunity, and am contemplating leaving academia entirely. My problem is that I don't want to give up too soon. This year I'm teaching and giving papers at conferences, as well as working to publish articles in academic journals and work toward a book proposal to send out to potential publishers. Coming from this place of fatigue and semi-despair, I asked the YI:

--Is it really worthwhile to continue quietly persevering with my academic work, hoping that something will eventually change with due effort and persistence? I got 29.3>48. Sounds pretty grim, but it also seems to be telling me to hold still and not do anything or attempt to go anywhere. Sort of like a "don't thrash around-- wait" sort of message.

--What should I know about my current predicament and my sense of confusion about what path to take, eg stay in academia despite the lack of opportunities, or pursue other paths (I am also a journalist and freelance writer)? I got 20.6>8.

Ok, so it's all about contemplation and keeping still until I have more information? I do have the sense that a big part of this is figuring out whether academia even aligns with my inner sense of values, and my needs. I'm unsure at this point how much sacrifice I'm willing to make to find a good academic post. Scholars often have to chase crappy 1-year teaching posts for YEARS before finding something decent and stable, and then it's quite far from guaranteed such a post will ever manifest. So part of me thinks, give up the ghost now-- there are many ways to be happy and professionally fulfilled. But I also have a history of giving up too soon when I feel professionally thwarted. So I don't want to do that, either.

Aargh! Any help/advice/compassionate perspective very welcome. Thank you friends.

29.3 > 48
29.3 is quite clear, it says you need to stop and think again as your position right now is dangerous. Basically you are not clear about what's going on and why you cannot move forward.
48 is a well, this could mean your knowledge that you have learned, and the corresponding line 3 of hexagram 48 also states that your talent is not being recognized (as the image suggests: the well is clear but nobody drinks from it, which is a shame). Only when you have demonstrated your talents you will be able to move forward.

20 is contemplation, which line 6 is asking you "Is your motive clear?". Are you sure what you want to do after this? This is a temporary blockage in your life which will make you stop to review your life and think again about what to do. Don't miss your chance when it comes, stay alert. Because the corresponding line 6 of hexagram 8 talks about a missed opportunity.

Ask yourself a simple question: "If I had a lot of money(or/and respect/love from others), would I keep doing this?"

This is the kit-Kat line, and the theme of its commercials
;)

Thank you for the replies, everyone. I don't quite understand the KitKat reference as I wasn't raised in the UK-- can someone explain? I've seen this reference in other threads on 29.3, but am simply clueless as to its meaning.

I'm taking the day off to contemplate/take a step back and try to stop thrashing around for answers. Perhaps that's the overriding message here. I simply wish the YI were more encouraging. For months now, the ambience has been one of waiting for the stagnation to break, but there just seems to be more of the same. Time to really assess the wisdom of this path, I guess...

I don't know about the use of the line by KitKat either, what I meant was - Answer this question honestly and it will allow you to see which way you really want to go: Sphere of science or journalism and writing. [20.6]

In other words - If your basic needs are satisfied what do you want to do?
Not for others, just what spurs you into action? What brings you genuine joy that you are willing to do just for fun, for inner delight.

What you should know about your current predicament:

20.6
Have a very broad View of where you look for
8.
Union

I think you are being encouraged not to limit your job search to academia.

Thank you for these comments-- they do resonate. Today I had a Skype meeting for someone interested in hiring me to conceptualize and write content for a new story-centric travel app, and I came away feeling inspired and refreshed. Perhaps I need to seek those unions far and wide....
