Hello Long Yi I think you're a master of the I Ching and I have a question for you. A while back you had posted in one of my threads that the pure hexagrams 1,2,29,30,51,52,57,58 do not bode well for relationship questions. Do you mean as an unchanged hexagram in the answer? What happens when in a casting the changing hexagram is a pure hexagram - the relating hexagram?

Hi Cornucopia,
I hope you don`t mind that I`m not Long Yi, but I guess I can answer your question too. Long Yi will probably also don`t mind, because he will be glad that he has less work, lol.

All the hexagrams you mentioned are so called six conflict or six strike hexagrams. This means that there is no connection between the lines, there is even conflict.

Long Yi explains it here:
Six conflict hexagrams

Check out this please for to understand why:
Relationship among branches

According Wen Wang Gua a six conflict hexagram is not auspicous in relationship questions. If you check out Long Yi`s material you will see that all the corresponding lines are in conflict with each other. Corresponding lines are line 1 and 4, line 2 and 5, line 3 and 6 if one of them is yin (female) and one of them is yang (male). This is a couple, man and woman, lovers you know???

So all positions of "lovers" are in conflict to each other at a six conflict hexagrams and apart from that all this hexagrams are a doubled trigramm. If you check out this hexagrams for corresponding lines you will not find some.

It is either yang/yang or yin/yin at the positions 1/4, 2/5 and 3/6, but not yang/yin on place 1/4, 2/5, 3/6 you see? No corresponding lines at all, the positions where the corresponding lines could be are in conflict to each other in addition and two same trigrams also don`t fall in love to each other.

One hexagram is a relationship of two trigrams. Look at hexagram 31. Mountain and Lake, the youngest son and the youngest daughter. This is a marriage sign ;) Hexagram 1 the Creative would be father and father..........hm........lol. Understand?

Look at the corresponding lines at hexagram 31. all lines are corresponding lines.
line 1 yin/line 4 yang, line 2 yin/line 5 yang, line 3 yang/line 6 yin. There is a continuous connection among all lines.

So the hexagrams you asked about are in general not well concerning relationship questions. It doesn`t matter if they are changed or unchanged. But they can change into a better hexagram of course and I always take more attenntion to the changed hexagram, because this is the result. Maybe a situation starts bad, but ends good. What is more important: The bad start, or the good end? You see :)

Your last question is puzzling to me, you asked:
"What happens when in a casting the changing hexagram is a pure hexagram - the relating hexagram? "

What shall happen? Do you think it becomes better, because it is the changed hexagram? The meaning of the hexagrams is always the same no matter if it is the originating or the changed hexagram.

Additional information: A six conflict or six strike can be eliminated under certain circumstances which are that one element of the originating hexagram is conjuncted with another element of an active changed line or if it is in conjunction to the day or month branch, but you definitely only find out this with a full six line analysis and for that you would have to learn Wen Wang Gua.

The opposite of a six conflict hexagram is a six match hexagram. At a six conflict hexagram all lines are in opposition to each other (conflict) and at a six match hexagram all lines are in conjunction (bound to each other).

Six match hexagrams are: 11,12,16,22,24,47,56,60. Although I wouldn`t say that 12, 47 or 56 are good signs for relationships, lol. But actually at Wen Wang Gua sometimes strange things happen. You get an inauspicious hexagram like 12. for example, but in the end it depends on the Relatives (humanized 5 elements/wu xing), their position (on which line), the changing lines and the strength of the lines if the oracle is really inausipicious or even auspicious. But as said for to find out everything very detailed you would have to learn to make a full analysis according the rules of Wen Wang Gua.

In general in Wen Wang Gua six conflict means: No. And six match means: Yes.

But that is just one of the meanings. It is too complicated to explain it all in short. So: This is only a part of the full information, but I can`t explain all those "thousands" of Wen Wang Gua rules in short or all at once. I try to give some information about it, you can call it pieces, bit by bit and by time and hope it helps someone, someday to put it together when add all other available information (Wen Wang Gua sites, blogs, books) too.

I hope Long Yi will go on putting his knowledge on his site, because as we see it is really helpful for to explain something or for making something more easier to explain :)

Hope this helps :)

Best wishes Yvonne

"thousands of rules" does not make or equal divination IMO.
