The I Ching focus appears to cover a property of symmetry where 'all is connected'.

When we recurse a dichotomy we are working within a closed system bounded by the elements of that dichotomy. As we recurse we are applying the original distinction to each class derived from such. This is interpretable as mapping the 'whole' (the original distinction) to each 'part' (derived distinctions) Thus we have:

Initial distinction - 0/1 (yin/yang)

second level we apply the above to EACH element to give us:

00, 01 / 10, 11

What is significant here is the representation hides a general to particular development where each pair of 'bits' represent a quality of meaning, a class of meaning (another successful form of interpretation is of frequencies - each bit reflects a frequency that is 1/2 that of the previous bit). As we progress so our classes develop at a rate of 2^N where N is the level number.

Thus at level three we have:

000, 001, 010, 011 / 100, 101, 110, 111 and so on. These bit patterns, interpreted as waves, sum to give us a unique waveform that is a 'meaning'.

This process of recursion acts to take a whole experience and fragment it into managable parts for analysis and response. Thus a particular focus will take one through level of recursion to some particular hexagram representing that focus.

Here we can take the whole of an experience, interpreted as patterns of yang and yin, and translate such into the set of particular patterns possible. Trigrams emerge at level 3, hexagrams at level 6, dodecagrams at level 12.

Surprisingly, at level 6 there is a phase transition where these 'mindless'
classes of meanings turn from literal representations to being usable figuratively and this is formal in that it takes logic operators to bring out this self-referencing capability. PRIOR to this level there is not enough resolution power to make any clear self-referencing possible.

The IDM/EIC focus on meaning covers a base level in our neurology that is integrated with the immediate context through sensory systems and as such operates in the realm of the concrete.

In this realm there are no labels but there can be differentiations of classes of meanings - sensations of 'wholeness' or 'partness' or 'static relatedness' or 'dynamic relatedness' or their composites.

The transcending of this level is in the form of abstractions where complex patterns are labelled to 'simple' words and these words then allow for imagination to work - we can go beyond the immediate context in imagining the future or describing the past or describing some current action NOT occurring in the current context - we communicate 'out of context'.

What is implicit in this, given neural hierarchy, is that all abstractions derived from dichotomisations are metaphors for patterns of meanings derived at the concrete level (this level is always in operation and as such contributes to all meaning generation).

Given this observation, we can in fact take two abstract dichotomies, e.g. fight/flight & yang/yin, recurse each, and identify their isomorphism ('same form') through mapping each to the concrete level of meanings and so a level of 'sameness' - this is a level grounded in symmetry. As we move 'up' the neural hierarchy we increase abstractions and move into the anti-symmetry (particulars analysis, differentiations) and on into asymmetry (mediations, language creation).

Given this capability of moving up/down the hierarchy, we can replace any dichotomy with any other since they are all considered metaphors and so all interchangeable. So - we replace them with the 0/1 dichotomy where its recursion gives us patterns of meanings to which we can apply logic operations.

(the hard coding etc of such covered in such as:

Parsons, L.M., & Osherton, D., (2001) "New Evidence for Distinct Right and Left Brain Systems for Deductive versus Probabilistic Reasoning" Cerebral Cortex, Vol. 11, No. 10, 954-965, October 2001 )

In the application of logic operations, in particular the play of XOR (Exclusive OR), EQV (Equivalence), and IMP (Implies), we find we can get a set of classes to describe themselves when we use XOR and focus on the distinctions of ASPECTS (parts, particulars)) (XORing - anti-symmetry) and WHOLES (EQV, generals, symmetry).

The NATURE of a 'traditional' dichotomy (A/NOT-A) is distorted when we make the elements of that dichotomy into part/whole relation. This is asymmetric and elicits a spectrum or parts list when recursed. XORing allows us to extract parts information from each class we interpret as a whole. This is akin to a class representing (a) a musical note and (b) a musical key OR it is akin to a class representing (a) a genotype and (b) a phenotype. This process brings out the ability of the finite system of classes to become self-referencing - we can get the system to describe itself (If but vaguely).

The practical nature of all of this is covered in the Emotional I Ching where we have (a) classes of meanings derived from recursion of fight/flight, and (b) classes of meanings derived from recursion of yang/yin and (c) classes of meanings derived from the neurology in the form of recursion of differentiating/integrating. (c) represents the IDM 'abstract domain model' that allows for the translation of (a) into (b) and so the translation of vague emotional assessments of some situation into a detailed I Ching representation where, using XORing, we can extract information from the assessment that is not obvious from an emotional perspective.

The IDM perspective is that all of this is a product of recursion and as such there is a property of recursion that has NOT been identified before - the phase transition from mechanistic to organic and so a natural brake system to any 'infinite regression'. Note that to get the 'language' to work we need the WHOLE set of classes to be defined - thus 'small world' network environments may not develop these capabilities due to local specialisations that can marginalise or even expunge necessary classes that enable full self-referencing.

An example is the wave-interference patterns that can emerge when dichotomisation is performed in non-ideal circumstances - patterns will emerge 'over time' and so rich associations come out of 'rote' learnings.
BUT the local context differences can then interfere with these processes and so elicit a vague set of meanings, including superpositions of meanings where context is needed to extract the 'correct' meaning. The more PRECISE the information processing the LESS we experience these superposition states BUT the more it takes to learn the language since all now is labelled!
