I made a new friend and recently he told me that he liked me and wanted to know if there was a chance we could be together. He's nice enough but the answer is no to that question. I asked iching what I need to know about this person. I got 39 unchanging - limping. What does this mean? He is a honest and hard worker but is he limping along?

Well. You searched advice in the I. The statement, from the same book reads:

"The southwest bodes well.
The northeast bodes ill.
Auspicious to see the great personage.
Good omen. "

The southwest is the area of friends. Seekin advice from a very good friend would be auspicious.

The nuclear hexagram is 64, Not yet across. I guess I Ching is reacting on the doubt of Yours, and telling You to have trust in the best friend of Yours.....

When I get 39 unchanging, it usually means that the obstacle is mainly of my own making. Since you asked about him, does this mean that his obstacles are mainly of his own making? This is very hard to know for sure because the I Ching often does not answer this sort of question (Who is he?) very readily but rather reflects the question back upon you, telling you something about yourself.
