Well this maybe a daft question but I'm curious to know if others have a most disliked/most liked hexagram to receive. I said on another thread I don't like getting 19 despite the seeming positivity of it. Not rational at all of course, just a feeling, or maybe I just don't like to get hexagrams I have absolutely no handle on. 26 is another that leaves me disgruntled, read alot about it but still can't relate it to anything very much and 13 is very boring. Yet 5 I find most attractive  My guts settle when I receive 5 and I like 9 too. Sometimes my emotional reaction to a hexagram I receive blinds me I think to what it might be advising. I wondered if I was alone in this kind of response - well apparently not, Bruce hates 9,6 and Luis gets frustrated at 54.

Which one do you loathe to get ?

Hi Trojan,

Mine's 47. I don't like the whole thing of not being believed even when you're telling the truth or something that needs to be said. Plus LiSe's site has it as 'enclosed tree' - I always was claustrophobic :(

P.S. I like 9 too. Kind of 'softly, softly, catchy monkey' :)

Yes, I also like 9 those long and dull details always give a deeper clu in the end.
I like 23 in a bizar way, then I think yes I Have to let go now especially when I get 23 -6
then I can start again with something new.

I don't like 27, then I think what have I done wrong this time?:(

I didn't like 13, not at all. And then it turned out to be my birthhexagram. 13.5! Eek...

So I looked a bit better at it, and started to like it more and more. Now I love it, and it seems the same happens with all hexagrams I did not like. When I start to understand them, I also start to like them a lot.

I threw 9.6 - 5 the last two days in a row. Even the weather agrees: sky of clouds and only a smattering of drizzle, everything is still. What I don't like about it is that there seems to be nothing I can do to change it. Some hexagrams offer a plan of action, or even a retreat to something rich inside, but with 9.6 all you can do is wait it out. Perseverance brings the woman (emotions) into danger, and willful persistence brings misfortune to the man (thoughts). Oh well, blame it on waxing moon.

Conversely, I like 19. It opens doors and gives a sense of purpose. Time to plant seeds.

I've never liked receiving 21.6. Who likes being told they're not listening? But one that bugged me for ages last year was 62. Being asked to make a substantial transition in a small way, on small resources, hopping from one clod of earth to the next when I can't fly.

I expect that when I learn to like this one, I won't see quite so much of it.

Well, a lot of them are not nice, but also some specific lines!

47 in general is bad but it usually talks about something that is only in my head, so I can deal with it.

I am terrified of 52.3, althought that heart attack has not materialized yet:rolleyes:

And 4 sometimes thinks I'm being stupid and calls me names! :hissy:

And I don't like 23 either but I must have been through it thousands of times so I'm not afraid of it anymore...

I used to like 31 and 24 and now I'm wary of them... 31 and it's tainted apple, 24 and having to turn back, or repent or something! oh well...

And, unlike Bruce, I like the ones where I don't have to do anything:rolleyes: , like 25.5, is it, the one of 'use no medicine'...

I guess they can all be good or bad, depending... But I will give you 5 47's for that 19 of yours that you don't want :D

I don't like 9 at all, reminds me of drizzle, too, and not being able to act ..like bruce. Ironically, though, I feel automatically exhausted when I get 7.. the whole image of an army and relentless, disciplined marching. yuck. when i get 15, i feel like I probably have a halo, but it's BORing.

conversely, I really love 26, the energy that you've built up is taking you somewhere. and 47 is always a relief because I like to be reminded to get over myself and to not make such a big hairy deal out of illusory problems...'get back to the garden' is one of my favorite images for that.

This is a funny thread. We always talk about there being no “good” or “bad” hexagrams, and logically, in the big picture, that’s true. But it doesn’t mean we have to like them all. Funny how certain ones we liked at one time have earned less than desirable status after more time passes, and vv. It’s also interesting how they vary pretty widely for different people.

62 for me is a bit like 9, but the difference is that the time of 9 seems filled with tension :brickwall: (dense clouds, no rain from our western region), whereas 62 (for me) is a more relaxed and even somewhat mystical time. With 62 I can still be effective in accomplishing small tasks. In fact there’s almost a Zen like quality to 62, if I approach small tasks with a meditative “be here now” mindset. 9 makes me think of minding the chickens. What do I know about chickens!

My least favourite hexagram at any given time is probably the one I keep on getting in reading after reading, even though I'm quite sure I got the message the first time, and will someone please tell the oracle to catch up? (Of course, if it's 62.3 that really doesn't help.)

Come to think of it, my favourite hexagram has to be 61. Even though I know from experience that it carries no guarantees about outcomes, it just acts like a powerful magnifying lens, I still love the imagery.

Wondering if ones hexagram preferences have any link with ones weather preferences.
Last few years I've got to love winter, if xmas didn't happen I'd love it more. I like the hushedness of it and the soft atmospheric light alot of heavy cloud gives when its not rained yet. I don't like lots of harsh sunlight anymore, its like its too too 'demanding' and in your face, lol. So maybe thats why I like 9, I feel theres something sensual about the expectancy in it, something promising and almost secret, hmmm am I getting carried away.

I did get a little infuriated recently when after a series of questions about my lack of progress, and being advised over and over there wasn't much 'big' I could do, I asked Yi to comment on my seeming lack of direction and got 9 unchanging emphasising all the previous answers. But then I realised it was such a 'true' answer and there wasn't in reality anywhere more apt for me to be. Ah great, looks like an overcast day here, I will go and revel in it, lol.

Oh I like 33 a great deal too. Well I guess obviously it has to depend on question context yet I never found anything but peace in 33 answers. I also have got to like 47 since its about a change in attitude mostly

I suspect LiSe is right we don't like answers we don't understand.

Yes its funny Bruce we know quite well one hexagram is not 'better' than another yet we seem to develop a kind of relationship with the hexagrams built on our experience with them. I think its when we know them better then we like them more - a bit like with people :)

BTW I've enjoyed reading everyones responses - quite fascinating :)

This is weird because its the exact reverse for me. I find something a little mystical in 9 and something annoying and restricting about 62.

Deal ! I will take the 5 47s, uh :mischief: or...maybee... give me more time to think about it...

27,1 has to be worse than even 4 for a slap in the face from the Yi.

You are right!
I also take 27.1 personally and I don't like it!

And I love overcast days, so maybe I will consider developing a relationship with hex 9:rolleyes: but I also love rain.... right now I don't know which lines actually talk about rain? I think 9.6?... I think so.. I like hex 9

This probably reveals more about me than it does the I Ching, but whenever I get 37 I feel short changed. I mean, when I toss the coins, I'm looking for some sort of Magical Mystery Tour and 37 is a kindly maiden aunt saying, "Aren't you glad you don't have to go out tonight? We can find happiness right here in our own backyard. Ohh, look, it's time for Wheel of Fortune!"

Let´s see...

Haven´t been here for a while and I loved this thread. But to think about which hexagrams I like, dislike or which ones makes me confuced... man, that made me wonder... I think firstly I do not like hexagrams that tell me to let go... Hexagram 23 and 59... or that keep me waiting while there is some enigine in my behind wanting me on the move... like hexagram 5, hexagram 24, hexagram 36, and o yeah....33.. .Hexagram 5 by the way is climbing in apriciation towards me, as I am aware what comes next... But still that darn fox in 64... or the ears indeed in 26 (and I even have hearingdevices!!). Hexagram 1 in one way makes me wandering, as when I receive that one static, with no changing lines I start thinking to put the fire back on in my behind... (6 yang... come on...!). Hexagram 15 is also bouring to me, as I sometimes realy do not want to be that modest AT ALL... But heee, I like 2... Bring it on..., 3 (then at least I know I am in the right tracks), 11 (let it flow, let it flow, let it flow...),14 (puppy ppppowerrrr), 16 (woeha), 17 (´I will follow´... u2), 18 & 24 (new chances), 25 (it´s only me...), 31 (gna gna gna), 34 (my dear fellow citizens...), 35 (let there be light!), 40 (Tjakkkaaaa!), 42 (ofcourse...), 45 (let´s get a bit smarter here...), 46 (promotion!), 55 (hell, even if it´s only for a night!), 58 (babble, babble, babble) and 61 (ofcourse I KNOW)... I´m sure I forgot some.....

Nice to be back again and reading this...

Frank (the other one...)

I have had a run, a Looooong run come to think of it, of 39 with all it's variations. I feel like clunking myself over the head with a huge rock when I get this, or throwing a huge rock though a big window, so I felt I must add it to the list of hated hexagrams.

And yet, today, for the first time I think, I read Lise's commentary on 39, and my gosh it is a Revelation. I always thought of 39 as being so stuck and I always seem to get this reply when I inquire about the ways I feel stuck and getting free. LiSe' s commentary is so refreshing. I guess one is stuck if "the paths of the world" seem like the only way to go, the only life there is. But obediently following certain paths , especially paths that are not really chosen, is not being alive. I guess the Yi is telling me exactly why I feel so stuck, and also telling me what I might be doing instead.
So I am happy this thread got me thiinking about "hated" hexagrams and that instead of trying to throw the huge rock in my path, I am now inspired. Maybe , just maybe, I am now starting to see what this constant, annoying 39 is trying to tell me. Thank you LiSE and thank you Trojan for this thread.

Good one, Listener.

My mental image for 39 is: water running down the mountain, meeting a fallen tree. Water backs up on itself and forms a pool; and for the time being, taking on a life of its own. After the water has raised sufficiently, it finds its way around, over and through the tree, and continues down the mountain. It's the continuous flow of water that guarantees the obstruction is only temporary.

Interesting Bruce. I guess I have this image from a computer program Oracle that showed a huge boulder in the path leading upward. and I like the image I have now of choosing not to keep trying to climb in that direction.
BUt I like your image too. the water gathering itself into a rising force.

You mean Frank likes hex 2 cos he likes women ? Hmm I don't see hex 2 as a woman, I mean I'm a woman and i don't feel hexagram 2ish as a being. Yin isn't woman, womans just more yinnish mostly, but perhaps this is Franks reason for liking hex 2. Hes gone very quiet on the subject though, perhaps he prefers to keep his 2 fetish undercover :mischief:

Ah, but traditionally hexagram 2 is always seen as the woman, where hexagram 1 is the man. I can understand that you don't feel two-ish, yet Kun is always associated with women. As is said in the Dazhuan: 乾道成男.坤道成女. "The Dao of Qian develops the male. The Dao of Kun develops the female." If Kun isn't women, what hexagram is?

Frank, please help us out!

Harmen.

I love hex.2, even love it a big lot. When I get it, I lean back and feel as if I get a big piece of well-deserved rest. I do have to do something for it, but that consists of not-doing, opening up to universe, stop thinking and start to just feel happy. For no reason at all.

Sitting in a green meadow and enjoying that divine cow of Luis.. with its dung cakes and humor. We'd make a great couple together. When I get hexagram 2 I feel close to nature, and when I don't, it makes me go there right away. It is what "coyote" stands for. Being coyote is being hex.2. Or the other way around.

Thanks Luis, great cow!
