Hi el al.

Follow a discussion on how the Hexagrams fit together as opposite binary images, which hold a math of Heaven and Earth 1 to 10, which fits into the Ho Tu to produce the 2160, 4320, 8640 and the value's of The Great Year, I posted a copy of a large book that has been written over a long period of time as a wrks file only.. This book has never been published but what was written to be an introduction to it was, this book being published under the name of 'The Sum of Things' that is now reprinted as a second edition by Morrigan Books is on sale through ABE Books or Readers.ie. (All details of the math and book are on my site I Ching Math).

The wrks file put up for sharing has a working title of 'The Book of Divine Revelations' - 'The Law's of the Sacred Mountain' and it's a private work untaken over 45 yrs of investigation of the symbolism and therefore the narrative contained within the verses of the I Ching as translated by Wilhelm - a book that I've constantly read and used since I was 15 yrs old and I still use the same book that I got when 17 as I lost the first one.

So this book as do the math contained in 'The Sum of Things' shows how the hexagrams match as binary opposites and not as the reversal sequence of Wen. The Trigram Sequence of The Well and Bagua are firstly fitted together in the Ho Tu as a 1 to 8 sequence of trigrams with the father and mother being 1 and 8, the eldest children as 2 and 7, the middle children as 3 and 6, plus the youngest as 4 and 5, as these pairings come together as having an equal value the order given in the Lo Shu = 1,8,2,7,4,5,3 and 6. The reasons behind both the inner sequence of Ch'ien, Sun, Li, Tui, Ken, K'an, Chen, K'un and then a placement where the trigrams 3 and 6 Li and K'an become the ends as the Outer Sequence is fully explained, not only in the math but also in the directions contained in the Great Treatise. This is all for the reader's own deliberations (as i said this is/was a private book - one used only for own readings).

So if anyone wishes to read it then the password is IChingCom and the URL =

https://files.me.com/paulmartynsmith/18rkq6

So all I can add is that I hope some find it of use in there own works.

Please note that the math now appearing in many aspects of other people's work is copyrighted as it gives a firm base of how the values of The Great Year are obtained, or why the value of 360 or 720 is paramount, as these values go on to give the Contracted Integer to Binary Image match seen also in the value's of Solfeggio Tones and Rodin's Torus in the 8 Spoke Wheel and the Nine Stack, but this should not deter anyone from adding their own knowledge to it, and sharing the work with those who are interested.

My regards - Paul.

The matching of Reflective Trigram Sequences 123 to 321 or 321 to 123.

The 321 = 6 Sequence has been given by S.M. Phillips, and it appears in Thomas Cleary's I Ching Mandalas 1989. The Trigram Sequence given by myself in The Sum of Things' Morrigan Books, 2007 = 123 = 6.

If 123 = 6, 246= 12, 369 = 18 this expansion fits the values of 1 to 9 = 6 to 54 so the value of 5 (the average = 30) and 10 = 60, and all numbers and their produces in the Trigrams and Hexagrams all = 3s, 6s and 9s. The Ho Tu gives the 4 Outer Squares 8x8 in each of their Elements manufactured from the Cyclic Signs that are arranged through the addition of 5 so 1 to 6 North or Water = 6 to 36, and its opposite 2-7 South Fire = 12 to 42 - the totals of each of the 4 Outer Squares = 84, 108, 132 and 156 so all pairings = 240 and 480, and when the Outer squares 16 x 16 are totally symmetrical in the placement of Binary Opposites (as they are in both 321 and 123). So in the workings of Phillips and Cleary Trigram Sequence 14327658 85672341) the same value's of Time, Degrees and the value's of Precession are still given exactly the same as in 12345678 to 87654321, as in the reflections only the Trigram positions change in 27, 72, 45 and 54, as 18 and 81, and 36 to 63 remain the same as they are natural reversals, and produce 8 natural Reversals in Hexagrams, and a further 28 Pairings between 56 hexagrams. This reflection gives both binary opposites easily seen in the square, and binary reversals seen in the diamond (as a square can be turned as to represent a diamond). I have used 123 = 6 = 12345678 as the reference point that shows the Trigram placement in this reflection, so Phillips and Cleary's sequence could also be 12345678 and my own would then be 14327658.

The Trigram Sequences and the Magic Squares of 18 to 81 in the Ho Tu's 1 to 6, gives both Binary Opposites and Reversals is the diagonal opposites of the squares within each 8 x 8 , and the Reversals form a Central Spine in the Diamond with each pairing sitting as a line either side of the spine.

But all this relations change depending on where we use them from.
For divination Yi Jing also changes them when it comes to the Trigrams alone(more on that below).
The other systems doesn't keep much of that as well. And there are many systems related and flowing in and out of Yi Jing. For medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine - they also view Yi Jing as their foundation, for the house in Feng Shui systems, for war in QMDJ, almost all examples of QMDJ I read lately are from different Yi Jing schools in China.

From what I know in these systems in the Five Arts practically very little of the possible relations are used. There is a reasons for that, one is that some of it will change depending on different factors.

So what is used...
Combinations between the Heavenly Stems from the Chinese Calendars are based on distance of 5, so we have 1+6(Jia+Ji), 2+7(Yi+Geng) etc.

Of course Yang numbers are uneven, Yin numbers are even, but that is only for the celestial stems. When we look at the Trigram, if we use later heaven arrangement for example Li will have the number 9, while it is a very female Trigram, being the second daughter and all, in later heaven arrangement.

Same problem using earlier heaven numbers, as Dui for example will have number 2, but will be viewed as yang trigram, even though it is the third daughter(more info - any book that has earlier heaven arrangement and maybe numbers of the trigrams).

Void is very important in the Chinese systems. I can explain that, but it won't be very useful for practice here as it is very related to the Chinese calendar and not so much for the text(as even if people know what line is in void, that won't be very useful without knowing what that line represents).

So the idea in the Five Arts usually is to flow with all the changes, Yang can change to Yin, even numbers while showing Yin may show Yang in another system. The more we understand the reasons for each of these steps the better we are at using the different systems.

So what else is used...
At the same time we have addition to 10. So 1+9, 2+8 etc.
That is from the 8th wing, the idea is that that is a way of moving back to earlier heaven flow(as it will happen if we set the later heaven trigrams on top of earlier ones, so that would be Lo Shu on top of He Tu in theory, but I don't want to go into that as it is very messy, we can think of it as just later heaven trigrams on top of earlier heaven ones).
So it is viewed as a combination of things that return both of them to a more pristine way of existing, before the manifested worlds flow around us.

However, it is interesting to mention that the Lo Shu doesn't look like this always. The middle number moves in Shen's Xuan Kong systems(I would love to say Dahong/Dajong original system, but that would be too hasty). Then all other numbers move as well.

The movement of the 5 out of the center... That creates situation out of balance, as the center/leader of 5 is in some other place and wants to go back(depending where the out of balance element will show up differently, but more or less always will be attempt to get back its center in some form). That also leads to the scary 5 yellow star in Feng Shui flying in different parts of houses and lands. In its own period it is very beneficial, but when it is out its just something too powerful and center related that has moved to the corners and wants back in.

If we have Lo Shu that is out of balance, much of the math represented in the west won't be valid, it will even lose the 15 in all lines part, the rest will change as well.
And if we believe the San Yuan approach, it will be out of balance 8/9 of the time. : )
(as last time it was in balance was 1944-1963).

Can see the different ways of flying of the stars of the Lo Shu in the flying star(Xuan Kong Fei Xing) schools.

Overall its very messy and very fluid and almost any solid rule we can device will turn to its opposite in another system of the Five Arts. One of the reasons they are considered so interrelated to each other and why its difficult to know even one of them fully if we have no idea about any of the others, in my humble opinion. : )
