Last question before I hibernate and take care of things in other recent threads...

I've had a pain in my throat for almost two weeks, radiating to my jaw. Doctors have no answers yet. I'm 34. I've never asked a health question to the yi before. And with this one, I have no guesses because I'm not sure it can be used this way... help?

The question was what is causing the pain/problem?

The Yi's response seems very, very 'obvious'.

The Relating Hexagram (Zhi Gua) 36 is WOUNDED BRIGHTNESS / BRILLIANCE INJURED. This Hexagram is about being "weakened" - that simple. This is the 'energy' with which you are approaching the Yi - your current situation or condition. The context within which the query is put forward.

The Primary Hexagram is 34. GREAT STRENGTH or MUCH FORCE. This hexagram describes great effort being put forth to a positive end.

The 4th changing line simply telling you that persisting or moving forward - good fortune will be found.

In line 6, once again, the Yi is pretty optimistic - once again asking you to persist. This line is more specific about breaking out from from an 'entanglement', a problem that one has been stuck in for a while.

Now, the point is that I don't have details about what you are doing or planning to do about this problem. Medicine, alternate treatments et al. I don't know - but whatever it is, the way is open. Persisting with it will bring good fortune.

Take care.

If the casting was 34 > 36, then line 5 changes too. You have been wanting to speak but haven't. The pain in your throat may be the effect of this stress.

OK, I did check. Strangeronatrain gives the castings as "34.2.4 to 36." Yes? :)

But lines 2 & 4 change, and line 6 doesn't... I'm going to toast my coffee to Mercury this morning.

It's my fault. I drew the hexagrams wrong. I need a break and am going to spread compost.

Oh sorry. I meant 34.2.4.

That is what I used for the interpretation.

In my case, too much partying on my birthday. I thought 34 but drew 43 so made an error in checking the casting. My reading, however, was based on the correct hexagrams, and I am eagerly awaiting a report from strangeronatrain on an improvement in health.

I spoke. No change yet, but both readings make total sense - glad the little communication snafu didn't affect the readings. With this part out of the way, I'll make sure to let you know if I get good news from the doctors or if things are at least diagnosed and treated. (Pocossin, this means that there will be some updates on the other reads too.)

Sonogram came back inconclusive. Pain persists. They want to try lowering a medication dose and see if that makes a difference.

I've had a pain in my throat for almost two weeks, radiating to my jaw.

I suspect it is the other way around. You have pain in your jaw, caused by the tension you have been under lately, that is radiating to your throat. Really, there is no such thing as "throat pain" or "back pain", although people used such expressions. Pain alway has a definite and usually small origin, usually no bigger than a pencil eraser. This center of pain can often be located and sometimes cleared by pressure from a finger (AKA acupressure). Press firmly on your jaw and throat to see if you can locate the center of pain, especially at the base of the tragus, the hollow under the ear, the hollow under the cheek bone, the space between cheek bone and jawbone (masseter), and the lymph nodes that are under the jaw bone about half way. If you are unable to find a tender spot, then work down the throat. I hope you do not have acid reflux. This may seem a remote condition, but pain may occur in one place and be 'referred' to another. This thread has got me pressing on myself, and I have found a tender spot on the left rear under the jawbone, probably a lymph node. Something to work on. As whimsical as it may sound, I think people would be healthier if they pressed on themselves more and massaged out centers of pain.

I think you were right! The pain is subsiding - I'm pretty sure it's not reflux - but it definitely appeared to be radiating pain from the jaw that sat in the throat, one of those long tendons seemed "sprained." Thank you!
