I hope I can get some help with these questions I asked today. I don't really like posts with many questions in them so I ask for your understanding:eek:

About a year ago I had some sort of virus that made my muscles feel tired, in fact the first thing I noticed was a little 'burning' in my thighs when I got up from a chair and then I had night sweats and excessive muscle fatigue that came and went. I saw the doctor who referred me to a neurologist who found some muscle 'irritation' but no neurological problem. I then went to another neurologist, a specialist in muscles and he was one of these doctors that are a lot of fun and I was feeling good in those days so I feel like my symptoms were pretty much downplayed by both of us and he told me I was fine, after a standard neurological examination. Before that, I had a lot of blood work done which found nothing wrong.

Well, ever since then, the problem has persisted, sometimes it's worse than others but even at the best of times I don't feel confident that I can do much exercise. I used to play tennis a lot before this but I haven't played again since this started and I just haven't really been exercising at all, which means that I am more out of shape than usual but I still think that doesn't justify my arms getting tired from hanging clothes or from stirring food sometimes...

I have asked the I Ching many times but today I am more emotional about this than usual so I decided to try and see if I can get some input on the answers I got:

(1) what is wrong with me?
30

I find 'fire' interesting since my muscles seem to burn sometimes, like they do when you lift weights... Martin thinks this could also mean that my body 'wants to move'. I guess it makes sense that the less I exercise the weaker my muscles will get... but I am not sure this is the original problem.

(2) what should i do?
21.4 => 27

I find it interesting that often in the past I have gotten 27 or 5 relating to this issue. My problem could very well be some sort of defficiency but I have had tests done for all the usual things, like potassium, calcium, etc. and they were normal. I only had a slight anemia at the very beginning.

(3) where is this going?
46.2 => 15

Don't know what to make of this... by the way, it doesn't feel like, whatever this is, is progressing too much, I felt worse in the first days than I do now.

(4) will i ever play tennis again?
34.1 =>32

I think this one looks like a no?

(5) what should i know about this? 42.1.2.4 => 6

Asking the previous question somehow made me very sad.. so this one might be emotionally tinted and I don't know what to make of the answer.

Any thoughts of any kind are welcome...:)

From Leichtman's Healing Lines:

1)What is wrong with me?

30.Addiction
The addiction is not just a psychological attachment; it has become a physical habit that disrupts the normal flow of your physical energies. This will inevitably lead to serious physical problems, unless you regain control and break the addictive habit. You are depriving yourself of the vitality you need.
30.1 The total indulgence of addiction can only be broken by total abstinence.
( Allergy maybe?-rosada )

56. You need to seek new understanding into your problem and how you can support the healing process. It may well be time to learn about mental self-healing, visualization, or innovative approaches to conventional methods. Interest in all kinds of healing will bring you good fortune.

2)What should I do?

21.
Renewal
Take care - your physical vitality is still somewhat erratic, even though it is growing stronger every day. Be sure to rebuild your strength carefully.
24.4
You must leave the past behind and chart an entirely new course. Welcome it with open arms.

27.
Nuturing love.
A sensible diet and the realization that true health emanates from the higher self. Open yourself to this flow of health.
(again with the diet suggestions -r.)

3) Where is this going?

46. Steady Progress
Your past efforts to establish greater health and productivity are now rewarded. If you continue in a similar pattern, your steady progress will also continue.
46.2
Your determination and progress have sown the seeds for continuing success.

15.
Moderation
There has been a tendancy to indulge in excesses or extremes. This has created imbalances which are printing out imbalances in the system.
Moderation is not meant to be a way to compensate for extreme behavior; ideally it is a life long practice of sensible health.
(sounds to me like it's heading towards getting better -r)

4) Will I ever play tennis again?

34.Peak Energy
If you are prudent and skillful, you can harness this energy, but you must be watchful for over excitement (over doing? I shortened this one a bit as I'm tired of typing. -r)
34.1 You need more than ambition and confidence to succeed. (other translations seem to be saying not to try too much too soon.)

32. Immortality
Joy. Wisdom. Love. Peace. The more these elements are a part of your life, the more you create a powerful aura of health, which not only protects you but also can be a source of healing for others.
(I'd be encouraged by this. Like, maybe you wont be back on the courts as soon as you'd like, but life is long and you are getting better so...)

5) What should I know about this?

42. Enrichment
6. Stress.

Auugh, I'm going to come back later and finish this post, but meanwhile I see 42 > 6 as meaning stress seems to increase the problem.

(1) what is wrong with me? 30

You're learning the insight that comes with a cultivated docility. The wisdom that comes with allowing yourself to be led. Nothing's wrong with you, in fact. You're learning, that's all. The physical stuff is incidental to this.

(2) what should i do? 21.4 => 27

You should bite through this, especially the emotional distress. As for the physical, act on your best judgement, do what you think is right.

(3) where is this going? 46.2 => 15

You're rising to a higher understanding that will embody a significant measure of humility through this. Possibly even a higher level of being. This is really good news.

(4) will i ever play tennis again? 34.1 =>32

You're wanting to get back into the tennis too soon. If you put yourself back on the courts now, the result won't be good. Work at getting to the truth of your situation first - you're gaining knowledge about your condition at this stage, not returning to the life you had before it appeared.

(5) what should i know about this? 42.1.2.4 => 6

You're spinning your wheels emotionally a bit - asking the Yi more questions at this point will only generate inner conflict in you.

Good luck with this. I think just about everybody at some point (some earlier, some later) have lessons to learn via physical problems or disabilities. It's common, but it's suffering.

"(1) what is wrong with me?

Something disturbing the nerve endings in your muscles causing a burning sensation. This then triggering things in your muscles to spasm, leading to aching and tiredness?

"(2) what should i do?
21.4 => 27

This suggest to me that you need medication.

"(3) where is this going?
46.2 => 15

This suggests to me that the condition is treatable, you need to go to another doctor.

"(4) will i ever play tennis again?
34.1 =>32

You wont play tennis in the short term but in the long term there is evry possibility of you playing tennis again.

"(5) what should i know about this? 42.1.2.4 => 6

I read this as you should go back to the doctor again and check, check, check, until you find the cause, then you will know how to deal with it, hex 6 is conflict and that is what your body is going through now. The text says no point is prolonging the conflict so go sort it out, somebody, somewhere must know what it is, as you can't be the only person on planet earth with this problem.

None of the doctors mentioned Fibromyalgia?

this was my thought too. my sister had it, it seems associated with unrestful sleep patterns; the muscles burn esp at joints and there is fatigue. she got better with time and rest.
you might try homeopathic cell salts...develped by Dr. W<H> Schuessler. i swear by them for every ailment....they are extremely nourishing for the tissues and constituents of various parts of the body....health food stores have them. Google his name. I have a book called The Biochemic Handbook which describe them and what they do
love to you.

Hi Angel,

Thumbing through these changes, I strongly lean toward what Martin has said, your body wants to move. I think so does your will, but your mind has enough doubts to inhibit your progress, physically.

(1) what is wrong with me?
30

The same way muscles can burn from working out, they also burn when atrophying. I went through this about 6-7 years ago. It got so bad that my MD and neurologist ran an MRI on me because they both thought I had muscular dystrophy. They could find no physical problems, saying it was a result of severe depression. They were correct.

About two years later I started working out. Nothing severe, just a steady routine of lifts with 60 lb barbells. I had to plow through my "inabilities", such as chronic neck pain and fatigue, but I 34'd and 46'd my way through it. In addition, I started walking regularly. After just 2-3 months, the change was astonishing to me, and I continue working out to this day, in spite of having congestive heart failure. It works. Plus, my body has toned up, which never hurts the ole ego. :)

(2) what should i do?
21.4 => 27

It will take fortitude to bite through the tough stuff, but the result is well worth it. Exercise and proper diet is what it's going to take.

(3) where is this going?
46.2 => 15

This is where your own will comes to play. It is going where you make it go. The potential is there, if you put in the effort to modify your patterns.

(4) will i ever play tennis again?
34.1 =>32

Power in the toes - misfortune. I think this speaks not to whether you will play tennis again, but to the way you are fighting with it. It's hard to play tennis on your toes ;). So stop tip toeing around and get busy. Don't overdo it either. Steadiness in the program is the key.

(5) what should i know about this? 42.1.2.4 => 6

Once you make the decision and commitment, the conflict is overcome, and increase is the result.

Like the Nike ad says: Just Do It! Don't make it impossible from the start by a "can't do" attitude, but also be careful of taking on too much at once. Work with where you are. You can always increase and modify as you go. Steadiness is the key. Make a routine of it, and stick to it.

Thanks so much to all of you for responses!

Rosada, at first thought I had was addiction, but I can't think of what I can be addicted to, but I like that observation, that it might be an allergy. Somebody actually suggested it might be caused by mold and I really should have the house tested for that. Thanks so much for taking the time to type all that information. And I do think stress increases the problem, if for no other reason because it makes my muscles tense up more.

Dobro, I really like your interpretation and I do hope that this is a learning thing. I agree that we can learn much from physical distress and also that this is a time to gain knowledge and not to pretend that things can be back to normal just like that.

Layla, Listener, nobody mentioned fybromalgya (they did test for lupus and other inflamatory diseases) but I looked up the symptoms and I don't have many of them. I am lucky enough to sleep pretty well most of the time and I am not really in pain, or even fatigued in general. I feel pretty good except that my muscles seem to tire too easily. Listener, I looked up dr Schuesler, and I found this website where they sell the salts... I will look into it. I like the idea of alternative medicine very much, although I don't really do much of it, I am sure it can only be helpful.

WF, you are right, and like others also suggest I think I should explore this a bit more with doctors. I might ask to have a biopsy... it sounds scary but it's not so painful, I already had a test in which the stick needles in the muscles and then check the electrical impulses... it sounds more horrible than it is so I figure that a biopsy can't be too painful and might help identify whatever is out there... It's amazing, though, how little doctors know about many of this conditions..

Bruce, yes, what I found most interesting about Martin's comment is that a while ago I also asked question about this and I asked him and he said the same thing and I am pretty sure he doesn't remember that, so I was amazed that he came up with the same interpretation on a different reading but regarding the same issue. It is amazing, how depression can cause such a thing. The specialist I saw pretty much
asked me if I was ready to contemplate the idea that it was all mental and I said yes, but in retrospective I just feel like I should have explored more medical possibilities. Your post has really inspired me to REALLY start walking, which is something I've been meaning to do but have been postponing because my body and will want to move but I am still the same old lazy person I've always been.

Thanks so much to everybod:), this really ALL makes sense, amazingly, since there are so many different points of view and these responses have given me a lot of comfort and the strength to start changing what I can change a little bit at a time.

Love to you all.:hug:

Hi Angel,

Mmm, but there is no separation from body and mind; that’s the thing. To say it’s all in the mind isn’t true, nor to say it’s all in the body. I would just hate that, when I felt like I was dying, and some well meaning friend would say, it comes from your mind. GRRRR!!! No, it is not all in the mind. The body feeds or starves the mind just as the mind feeds or starves the body. But healing has to start somewhere, and the mind is a fertile place to plant seeds. Then the body must contribute to the process. The mind alone won’t do it, but neither will the body. It’s a marriage of the two, which btw is 32.

Yeah, I hate it when they say, "It's all in your mind," as if that made the condition any less real...

All knowing Doctor: Don't worry my dear, your husband just THINKS he's ill.

Grieving Widow: Oh really? Well, now he thinks he's dead.

Yeah, that one's a bitch.

But not as bad as when other people think you're dead and you disagree.

Yes, very true. I have experienced that a lot too.. anxiety is not all in your mind. It's in your body too. But, as you say, it is a good place to start the healing :). I think that doctors say things are on your mind mostly because they just don't know what to think. I find modern medicine very inadequate and suffering from 'tunnel vision' as well. The right hand doctor does not want to think about your left hand and whether it is part of the problem or the whole problem in itself. Doctors these days are more like techinicians, they have their little flow charts and they just follow the questions and branch around and arrive to a diagnosis or to the empty place that is all in the mind..
I like it that 32 is the marriage of the mind and body :)

And yes, it's hard to tell the dead person that it's all in their mind:rolleyes:

Hi Trojan:hug:,

Thanks so much for your support, in fact I do feel so much better today and I got myself some walking shoes and I have been trying to walk as much as I can, which is a start, so I know I will feel even better soon. :)

Yay! You go, girl! :)

For me, walking is a discipline, but it can sometimes become a chore; one I simply must do it to feel good. I find the frame of mind I put myself in while walking has everything to do with how easy or difficult it is, especially walking uphill. Walking meditation makes it effortless, and very enjoyable. Right now I'm waiting for the sun to go down behind the mountain, and then I'm out the door. Walking in 100+ F isn't healthy.

100 degrees! It doesn't get that hot here but summer is not the best time to be outdoors, it's a choice between the heat or the mosquitoes:rolleyes:
But that is no excuse to not walk, of course! :)

How do you do a walking meditation? I would love to do that if I could..

Yes, 100, and the season is still early. It'll climb considerably higher, and that brings the monsoons up from the Gulf to the desert.

Like any meditation, trying too hard inhibits it from happening. It's a practice, and with that it comes naturally. You can focus on breaths going and coming, just as with sitting meditation, or on your steps, one in front of the other, or on the road coming and going, or even on being one with the environment and critters. There's no rule I employ. Sometimes the world gets me all jittered up, and I use the walk to ground myself (literally) and walk the nonsense out of me. There's no meditation until that rubbish is cleared from my mind and body, and if a walk does nothing more than ground and clear, at least I return lighter than when I left.

If I think I walk for a purpose, I can not meditate on walking, but it can still be a good walk. If my walk has no purpose other than to walk, then I meditate. Then there is no me and thou.

I will try all of that without even trying! :)

I know, it sounds simple but it's like any other meditationm not really easy to 'get there'... I always tend to walk fast, which is not right, specially for this. So I will try walking slowly and trying to enjoy the surroundings, yes. I need all that.:bows:

Fwiw, I found these things not from trying but from walking. Besides, where's there to get to? That's sort of the whole point: walking to walk, not to get somewhere. Meditation is the same. Where there's motive or intent there is motive and intent, not walking, not meditating. Have fun walking, let your mind wake on its own.

Welcome to the secret society of walkers. You are in good company....Greta Garbo, Harry S. Truman, JOhn Muir, Brenda Ueland, Dr. Barbara Moore, Bruce Grilli, Yours Truly....
"There have always been people- a few- who like to walk...a smallish, somewhat secret society, in which each one tends to keep his membership private...Most walkers are soloists, each a revolutionary cell...."

and fast is fine! I think far is what counts. Give the endorphins a good chance to flow. In time! Happy Wanderlust! (better take along water if you are in florida though)

Cool! Do we get a pin? a hat? a t-shirt? a secret handshake?

But, see? Listener gets it on her own way - fast, distance oriented.

Whatever works for you is what matters. It's your walk.

(Since Listener is so vigorous, she can carry our water for us.)

I am thirsty already but no need to bring water today, it's raining cats and dogs here!

Walking fast can be good for fitness, but just to get moving and to get moving in a nice, meditative way, I think it's better to have nowhere to go and just walk for the sake of walking.

Pretty soon you both will have to teach me that secret handshake!;)

This is a little feedback...

I've been feeling pretty well ever since that day when I posted this and I've been trying to move around a bit more... walk a little bit, I can't say I've done much...

But yesterday one of my tennis friends called and asked me to go play with her a little bit, maybe just hit the ball around a bit.. and I said yes because my muscles felt fine.

Before I went to play I had asked the I ching, 'should i go?' and it had replied with

32.3 -> 40

and I thought the line was a bit scary. Something about misfortune for not having duration in one's character, I think (don't have translation with me). Well, I felt it was not too positive but I went anyway.

I was a little nervous at the beginning, I had not played for a year! and I did not play for long, specially because I didn't want to overdo it; I did not know how my muscles would react. So I did not run much after the ball, played only one set of singles, and even won two games :blush:. It felt great. And my muscles reacted just fine.

So, now that I've survived my little tennis session without terrible injury, I can't say I'm "cured", I can't say I won't have any problems in the future but I can definitely say that there was no harm stemming from it and I figure there must be something in that 32 that is telling me just that. Because, interestingly enough, I got 32 when I asked the question "will I ever play again", which I posted in this thread (34.1->32 - what a whiny question, yes? :D) . And the words from Bruce, that 32 is the marriage of body and mind also came to me and I think there is something there.

Maybe the I Ching was scolding me a bit for blocking myself so much with my mind, telling me let go a little bit of all my hypochondriac worries. Because, rationally speaking, if my muscles felt fine and I have not been diagnosed with any illness, much less advised not to exercise, I really shouldn't have been worried about going.

So, I really don't have a great insight into hexagram 32 but this is my experience with it and maybe it can be useful for those more gifted about the Yi. And thanks again to all of you for all your replies and your support.:)

Hello Lightangel I just saw your question and mayby this will give you some extra information.
The problem you are having we call in acupuncture "empty heat" There is not enough yin, and there is too much fire. But when the matter(yin, the middle line of fire) is gone you will feel tired till you find again some new yin to burn.
So do exercises but be carefull with doing to much with to much effort. When you can't breath easily the energy is not comming deep enough in the muscles.

Before I went to play I had asked the I ching, 'should i go?' and it had replied with

32.3 -> 40

32. is thunder on top and wind below, both element wood.
Wood is the only element that has equal yin and yang lines. So the only element that has a inner balance. Wood is also the element that gives a start to something, like spring.
32 is also the middle hexagram of 64 .
Wood has to do with muscles and tendons. When there is not enough yin than the yang has no root and it is hard to be under control. Wood is also assertivity but again under control. And the third line the line of ambition under control will get you out the sphere of danger.

Great news Lightangel . If you just look at the two hexagrams 32 to 40 it could be read as steady improvement - . Take it steady :)
