I have taken my son's newly married father back to court for the payment of child support. Our case is supposed to be heard in the court on May 20 (a Mercury retrograde period). His father has responded contesting child support and four days later submitted his own court request asking for more overnights with the child. He has since asked if we could go to mediation and I am not willing to do that. I have asked two questions: From the readings I take that I will oppressed in mediation and that by going through the court system I will have the help I need. I have asked two questions:

1. Outcome if we go through mediation: 47.5
2. Outcome if we do not: 10.3

For the first question, I believe Hexagram 47 represents the current situation: oppression. Nine at Fifth speaks of a person bound by an official (Your ex maybe?), but perhaps the mediation would lead to a loosening of his "dilemma." The relating figure, Hexagram 40, could represent loosening of problems for him or for you; legal trouble is never fun, even if you have right on your side. However, I agree with your general feeling. Mediation isn't necessarily good for you.

Not entering into mediation isn't necessarily a pleasant option, though. The general situation of Hexagram 10 seems to indicate that you are in a difficult situation that requires great care. The changing line paints a bleak picture of a "one-eyed" and "lame" person walking on a tiger's tail; not a great position. Further, it suggests you take action only if you must. As in the case of a warrior who MUST fight for her "prince." You seem to be in the weaker position but are compelled to fight anyway. The relating figure, Hexagram 1, could be a multitude of things. It could represent your desire to act, advice to take action, or it could mean, as you believe, that you will have the energy to see your litigation through.

I am by no means an experienced diviner. I am currently going through legal trouble myself and felt compelled to comment so that your post would not be buried. I was about to type "Take my words with a grain of salt," but I keep adding that caveat to every post. So, I'll make that my signature instead. I hope this helps.

Thank you, Sun. I have decided to try mediation first. I would feel as a warrior in the court to protect my son, who is definitely my prince, although I'm hoping that with mediation things will either be settled or we will end up in court, anyway. I asked how mediation would go and received 15.1>36. Any thoughts?

I feel like entering into mediation is definitely a humble action, hence Hex 15, and the continued advice seems to conform with the primary hexagram.

The Six at the Beginning seems to be advice to keep things simple at mediation in order to ensure success.

The relating figure, Hexagram 36, points to more of the same: maintain your "inner light" while remaining "yielding and tractable" on the outside. In other words, you may have to "hide" your "light" in order to avoid attracting unnecessary attention or ire; don't tip your hand too soon. My favorite bit of text, in regards to your situation, is in Wilhelm's commentary: "In social intercourse one should not try to be all-knowing. One should let many things pass, without being duped."

So, I would take this advice to collectively mean that you should remain calm and maintain a pliable appearance while remaining inwardly strong and aware of all possible outcomes. And, like you said, you can always go to court if it looks like he is just trying trick you. You might want to consider doing a divination concerning the potential outcome of going to court. I hope this helps.

Ah yes, thank you! I spoke with my attorney today and we agreed that mediation would let us know what he was up to. I did do a reading on the outcome of going to court and it looked like the message was court was a no go. So I wasn't surprised mediation came to the table. I love your comment about not tipping my hand too soon. I think if mediation doesn't work, I will ask about going to court again. Do you think I should ask something about what's up his sleeve? My sense is that he is hiding something or there is more to come. You are so great to respond to this! Thank you. I hope your own issues are working out for the best.

Just out of curiosity, what did the Yi say about going to court?

With 47.5>40 I would definitely go through mediation. At first things will look bad but then will turn for the better. It promises release from danger/problems while the Tiger of hex 10 would bite you for sure.
All the best!

Many thanks to both of you!

Sun Wukong: I can't remember the specific hexagram but when I read the interpretations they indicated it was an event that would not happen. I tried to find the hex again in my history but it must have been deleted. I'll try to think about what it was ...
