Hi Anon,

Yes line 3,56 can be disturbing in that it warns against careless behaviour with people and situations. This probably describes how the rift in your friendship occurred. I know that its easy sometimes to treat our closer friends with behaviour that we wouldn't dare put on others further removed. At this stage it doesn't matter who was careless, you or your friend or both of you. The I Ching expects you as the student of the sage to accept responsibility for your past actions, correct your behaviour and then gives you a possible outcome if these measures are taken. Hex 35 is a very positive outcome, where 2 people can be together and continue to develop. In fact, this outcome is as good as one can expect from the past problems. So, yes the outcome looks good, if you are prepared to follow the advise of the sage, who is clearly saying, this relationship can be extremely good again.
Hope this helps.

A different perspective:

As a WARNING the issue of 56 -> 35 reflects 35 as a distortion, of one being drawn away from the path of 56 which is a path dealing with loyalty. Here 'bringing something into the light' (properties of 35) is an issue that is negatively affecting the expression of 56.

This interpretation reflects change as a distortion, a movement AWAY from the archeype that is here 56. There is no change in toto, no change in core nature, just 'shape shifting' that may work for a local 'disturbance' but can become exaggerated to a degree where one is distracted from the core path that is 56.

Alternatively, as a marker of true change where there IS core change, 56 changes in toto to 35, the focus is positive in that this form of change reflects a changing of context as a consequence of escape or of 'transcendence', thus a context of loyalty changes into a context of progress, of bringing something into the light and in doing so 'moving on'.

Thus the 56 context is in someway causing 'problems' and an escape is necessary - this is reflected in the change to 35.

Which is 'right'? you decide. which one 'grabs you', which one do you intuitively respond to?

The proactive form of the I Ching focuses on asking questions, very general ones, and as such can aid in getting close to the issue at hand:
