Good morning everyone,
I did a reading asking the I ching if i should just up and quit my job. I have no back up plan, would just live off my savings while searching for something else. However, I feel i have reached the point where i just cannot take it anymore and everyday is agony to come in.
The response I got from the I ching was 38.3 changing to 14
my first thought was this is a clear sign that I should quit because I read it as saying I should "cleave" to what I feel is right which will ultimately lead to a better situation (hex 14) but...
then I came across a transaltion of this line which basically stated I should just deal with it. This is part of what that transaltion said:
"So whether enduring a punishment/reprimand oneself or watching another person in distress, one should not get carried away. This is a just a passing event and is not to be regarded as anything more than a temporary estrangement. There is hope of better times ahead."

Now I'm thinking the reading is saying I am in possesion of a job and should just deal with it!

anyone have any experience with this line in regards to work issues? or any ideas on how I should be reading this would be much appreciated!

Hi alev,
I'm wondering if there is anyone or anything about your current work that is good? Is there a co-worker you could "cleave to" or is there something positive about the work itself that you can focus on, that would make you feel this job has a higher purpose? Maybe just that it provides you with a paycheck! I don't have any experience with the line but it reads to me that you shouldn't leave just yet.

Hi Rosada, It's interesting you say that because one reason I havent quit so far is because the man that I have a crush on is involved with my company and being here I get to run into him from time to time! So leaving would kind of squash that but that seems like a silly reason to stay and be otherwise miserable.
losing the paycheck is definately the main reason why i havent left yet, it's such a huge decision

Quite simple, although you hate the job for whatever reason, it is telling you to stick it out, stay with it as the situation will improve over time.

Thank you willowfox, I guess I probably knew that but my brain was trying to twist my reading to give me the okay to be crazy and rash and just up and leave and maybe I still will, but I think I will try to deal with it at least for a little while longer. and probably figure out a back up plan first :)

Hi Alev
This sounds a really painful situation so perhaps a little something to help with your forward thinking and planning.

The reading perhaps isn't just saying for you 'to throw it all in' or 'to stick it out ': 38 can sometimes be a bit more subtle than that. "Should I just up and quit my job?" -

38.3- Celebrate the diversity I meet each day. Everything and everyone is different, if I let the things I see and the things I feel drag me down then that is how my world will be. Remember that how you look at thinks is how you see things. Negotiate want you want to get from every experience. To quote Stephen R Covey 'Begin with the end in mind.'

14 - You have the resources to move yourself to a happier place, whether that is in your current position or at another employer, only you can answer that.

Best of luck with your next step.

Mike

Hi Mike,
thank you for your kind understanding. The situation is indeed painful for me. I've been in my position for 6 years now and have felt frustated for the last 2 basically because there is simply no advancement oppurtunities left here, so the thought of doing the same thing every day without any type of goal ahead of me sort of kills my motivation. So that's a big part of it. I do get along great with most my co-workers and hang out socially with many of them outside the office as well. However, my co workers constantly fight and bicker and bully each other all around me. I stay neutral and keep my opinions to myself but the constant state of tension and animosity around me makes me want to scream some days! This is actually the main reason I struggle with coming in everyday, the negativity is so heavy in the air here that I am completely down by the time I leave
The other issue is with the new management, which now micromanages everything so I feel constant pressure of her looking over my shoulder and demanding things to be done in ways that aren't very efficient etc...
okay, I know I am ranting on and on a bit but it does feel good to get it all out

Hi,

After reading over your situation, the image and line really do reflect what's going on, especially to an outsider like myself.

As line three is typically looking to move on ahead and beyond the situation, the fact that it is yin and changing adds more detail in keeping with your situation. If it were yang, one might assume that you were looking to take matters into your own hands at work in some way. However, the changing yin reveals your desire to leave the situation rather than to manipulate it.

You also describe what is so unpleasant about going to work, namely what you observe going on around you. The text of line three also starts with the words "one sees..." followed by negative scenes.

So the first observation is just how in tune the images in your answer are with your situation. Now to working with your answer.

Line three has three yang lines to which it can turn. In your current situation, this means that you have more than one option, and that with deep thinking you can figure out more than one acceptable path out of this.

To explore further, line two would be one option, and it remains in the inner trigram. Perhaps this is you remaining at your current job. Line two is centered and just beneath your line three, supporting you. That means that your current job would work out as it is with you just falling back on whatever you consider to be symbolized by line 2, such as the dependability of the job, the pay, the routine.

Line four, just above, is in the outer arena, in the outer trigram. Perhaps this is your taking a risk and quitting. What does it symbolize to you? It is right next to you, next door so to speak. That might mean any idea or venue that quickly comes to mind as first choices, preferences, etc, the first place you might go for help.

Finally line 6 also corresponds to line 3, and is the furthest and most extreme. It also appears in the outer trigram, perhaps symbolizing a move beyond your current job. My guess is that you have higher aspirations that aren't supported yet by your current lifestyle, but there is a way to get there. After all, there is a correspondence.

Don't give up. Keep thinking.

very best wishes,
Schastlivchik

We know that you really want to leave but as I said before, line 38.3 cautions you not to leave at the moment. Jumping out of the frying and into the fire of unemployment is not a sensible solution to your dilemma. You need to find an alternative job before handing in your notice as job are getting rather difficult to find these days.

So, perhaps a few more readings are in order to find out about your prospects of finding a new job etc and how to make your existing job more palatable.

wow, okay Schatlivchik you totally hit the nail on the head. Aside from the negative draining atmosphere, the real issue is I do have higher aspirations that aren't supported by my current lifestyle, I definately feel stagnated careerwise and I am looking for growth and creative activity!
But as willowfox wisely advises, I do live in America and the job market is very very scarce now, it would be foolish to just up and quit irrationaly without a backout which was what i nearly did just a week ago...I have begun planning...
thank you once again willowfox for your genuine compassion, I think i should do a few more readings too. Any suggestions what I should ask or should I ask again my initian question?
