Hi everyone,
I'm faily new to the IChing. I've finally found out it's based on the binary system used in computer programming. I'm stuck, today I got all 0's I didn't have any changing lines, and I got a locked hexegram. It was 1 unchanging the creative, regarding an organization that i'd like to join as I'm blind and would love to connect with other musicians. So, Iknow when I'm reading threw the threads I hear my computer say something like, I got hex 24, 345 changing into such and such. So, my question how does the binary system work in IChing readings? I know it's comprised from 0's and 1's but I'm confused, help is greatly appreciated!
All the best,
Celeste

Dear Celeste
Forgive me but I'm not sure how you navigate the Internet as a blind person, but I'm assuming that you have some technology that either translates to Braille or reads to you? Anyway, for how the I Ching works and how to consult it, Hilary has a whole area called Learn, which you can access here www.onlineclarity.co.uk/learn/

As for yoru reading, number one The Creative unchanging seems pretty good to me - and I imagine that the I Ching is saying 'go for it'. But there are others here who are much better than me at interpreting readings.

I do hope this helps you

Celeste,

If I understand correctly, you want to know how to relate binary sequences to hexagrams. As you know, the binary system consists of zeros and ones. Zero is a yin number and 1 is a yang number (as are all odd numbers). Thus zero stands for a broken line and one, for a solid line.
The hexagrams are read from bottom to top, and the binary sequence is read from left to right. Thus, for example, hexagram 24 (Fu) would appear as 100 000 in binary (I added a space in the middle to make it legible and to split the two trigrams). 100 is the lower or inner trigram and 000 is the upper or outer trigram. There is a solid yang line at the bottom with five broken yin lines above it.

"I got hex 24, 345 changing" >> 24 = 100 000, so 24 with 3,4,5 changing = 101 110 (the zeros in positions 3, 4 and 5 change to ones in this case), which is hexagram 49. Changing simply means that zeros change to ones, and one change to zeros.

Take care,

Tony
