help with 'splitting apart' as a repeating message for moving house

OK so I thought this might be a good learning tool.

I was unhappy in the house I'm renting so I found another apartment. I haven't signed the new lease yet but since finding it, I've felt that maybe the house I'm in is good afterall (he started making repairs) and feeling anxious I could be walking into a whole new set of (unknown) problems vs just dealing with the situation here.

I asked two questions "what is the upside of moving to ___" and "what is the downside of moving to ___"

Upside: 15.3.6 > 23
Downside: 35.4 > 23

It really stands out that they both lead to 23 which does not feel aligned with the security, safety, and comfort I'm seeking in a living space. I've had to move many times in the past few years and really just finally need peace and stability.

When I focus on the changing line the downside is also concerning:

» He advances like a mormot. However firm and correct he may be, his position is one of peril: his place is not that appropriate for him.

To me, this reads overall as a clear "don't move there!" but I could potentially lose the deposit I put down so I don't want to make the decision carelessly. I have to decide this basically within 24 hrs so not sure if I'll hear feedback in time but I'm curious to hear thoughts, especially this repeating message of 23 that feels important (?)

Thank you!

Not sure if this would interest anyone but I did a follow up question in a format I've never used just asking "Stay or Go" and received 25.4.5.6 > 24

The line of Legge's 24 that stands out is "There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made."

In Hilary Barrett's translation the changing lines are:

Changing Lines

Line 4

'There can be constancy – no mistake.'

Line 5

'The affliction of disentangling.
No medicinal herbs, there is rejoicing.'

Line 6

'Without entanglement,
Acting brings blunders.
No direction bears fruit.'

When I keep it very simply, this again makes me think to stay where I currently am. "There can be constancy" and "no direction bears fruit" seem to share that message?

I'm not sure if there's a larger meaning, pattern, or theme I could be missing though, since I would technically be changing my mind in order to stay so does that qualify as "constancy"? I think it does but just interesting food for thought.

Also from Barrett's 24:

"and so – in the fullness of time and following a natural progression – there comes a moment to turn round.

Through all this going and coming and starting afresh, it is good to have an overarching direction and purpose to guide you. The quality of Returning is alive, growing and dynamic – a good time to rediscover your own deepest intent and its harmony with the Dao."

Just wanted to follow up on this even though there were no replies. I ended up getting my deposit back and not taking the apartment because the lease turned out to have some things I didn't like. I think I made the right choice even if I'm still not sure of exactly how to interpret.

Hi

In general, hexagram 24 is to me that kind of safe space feeling. It depends on what is surrounding the question of course. It can be like a feeling you have been traveling, it's raining, it's cold then you finally get home and do what you want to do. I have received the answer when work has been too much.

It is kind of like being told to not worry too much about the outside world, take care of yourself. It's different to me than hexagram 27. In the sense, where you really need something. It is actually quite a nice answer for me anyway.

Thanks for sharing your experience, that's helpful to know.

I ended up "staying" but only very temporarily, as in not going to the new apartment. I stayed where I was very briefly and then left there as well just to move in temporarily with my partner. Neither place felt 100% but I suppose staying gave the opportunity for this next development to unfold. Out of all the options, this is the most stable and home-like, even if I ultimately do want my own place (since we both work very heavy schedules from home and that's been a bit overwhelming while also being quarantined for a year.)

I really appreciate hearing your experience.

I hear you I am in the same situation, my partner and I both work from home in the same business. Everything, is peaceful most of the time then all hell breaks loose.

Back to hexagram 24 ( excuse the pun) For me its not usually a permanent type of feeling. Many times you are catching your breath. The advice I guess is that it can be comfortable. It may give you just enough time to move when your heart is in it 100%

When I focus on the changing line ...:

I am wondering which line this is, and whose translation is it?

I looked at a few different translations and didn’t see this.

And I gather the situation is resolved, correct? At least the one you asked about.

Okay, so now I know you're quoting Legge, but I'm completely baffled as to what your original two readings were (and since you actually got a different line, maybe both resulting hexagrams are no longer 23?). But no matter - I gather you have already acted to resolve this situation - by either staying at your old place, and/or moving in with your partner.

( As to Editing, at the bottom of your posts you should see links to Report, Edit, Delete. I believe the Edit option is only good for limited time, and so if you're not seeing it, that time has likely passed. )

I re-read my original post and there's actually no error. It just didn't specify which changing line I was quoting. I assumed there was an error because of your question. Actually nothing is wrong. Sorry to add confusion!

from the original post:

"I asked two questions "what is the upside of moving to ___" and "what is the downside of moving to ___"

Upside: 15.3.6 > 23
Downside: 35.4 > 23

» He advances like a mormot. However firm and correct he may be, his position is one of peril: his place is not that appropriate for him."

The quote is from the second casting. They both change to 23. I just didn't specify which line I was referring to. Sorry about that :)

That actually really fits with what happened! We were recently in a bad lease agreement and have a lot of fear of repeating that. So I was over-stressing and overthinking this decision. Things sort of worked out by not forcing either decision on myself.

It's interesting to compare Hex 24 to Hex 23 in this context, since 23 came through in the initial readings. I wonder if it was somewhat predictive in that it did in fact "strip away" what I didn't need (these other complicated situations). 24 "turning point" does also mark a turning point with my partner who is a very important person in my life (of course). Another moment of us making a choice together and so forth.

And yes, quarantine and work for home has been... a lot. Ha! We both basically talk to people all day long so we're distracted until we are both just being too noisy for each other and then it's like being trapped in a very small box together. Interesting times! lol.
