I asked the YI "how can I best achieve X" - because I have tried all approaches that I can think of and i thought maybe the Yi would shed light.

I received hex 10 unchanging twice. After reading the archived threads on this hex, I gather it is telling me the following:

Approach the problem in a proper way, ie go in order, step by step, and dont offend anyone.

The problem is, the "main route" to achieving my goal involves other people and involves not just their willingness but their honesty and their discipline. (think of building a city, you cant do it alone, and if you get bad people to build it with you, it will end up a disaster) So even if I go the proper route, the others involved can say No. If i take route B to achieving it, that is less "proper" (and also no guarantee of success). So I'm not sure what i can get from this hex. Anyone?

Sweet playfulness is the key to success

From what you posted above, you have suspicions that some of the people you'll have to deal with might be "bad" people: of dubious discipline and honesty. There is this dichotomy drawn between what is a proper and what is not a proper route. Yet in hexagram 10 the quality that allows one to tread on the tiger's tail and not get bitten is said to be one's innocence and childlike cheerfulness. So drop your doubts and get off the seat of judgment, because sweet playfulness is the key to success in this situation.

I am thinking that Bradford's Notes on 10 could help you:
'Finding the optimum balance between what you want to do and what the world will allow, you are, in a sense, what you get away with'.

i can't see 10 unchanging as advising playfulness, far from it, so I disagree with Ginnie here. you have to watch your step carefully. I think if you try to get what you want by any means you could get bitten.

A small but significant number of the translations I use say that taking a humorous, childlike approach is advised with hexagram 10 unchanging. It may not be appropriate in all circumstances, but I think it can be useful for Elizabeth in this case, because Elizabeth is a very serious person and probably needs a counterbalance to that. It's possible to be watching one's step inwardly but outwardly adopting a lighthearted manner, so as to better get along with all people. So I stick by what I posted.

I completely agree with this. Treading lightly means not being too heavy or serious. The way to deal with "bad" or difficult people is to "kill them with kindness."

If you did that in my school, you'd never have lunch money. Earning their respect meant putting more on the line than your kindness. I kinda think the real world is like that too, although a totally kind world would be wonderful.

I'd be kidding myself to think I could actually sneak past a tiger amidst the bamboo forest. At that point I'd already given my fate over to the tiger. It's the only hope of escape, fate. That's when living becomes scary and fun!

I know this is an old thread , but I felt like I wanted to say this. Have any of you ever seen the cartoon Masha and the Bear? (Yes I watchy brother's kids sometimes). The content in this thread reminds me of that show, she is adorable and playful like a kid should be and the Bear reacts rather protectively as she is getting into or doing stuff that could cause her harm. But she doesn't kill the bear with kindness, she kind of just takes what she wants and does things her way, in that brash way that children do.. I suppose this is one way of seeing hex 10.
