I knew this person at a time when I was my real self - plain simple and unadorned

River, shared readings are best when engaged in as a mutual benefit for both parties. If I were someone answering questions on this forum for free, it would be because I would get a good feeling from helping people. Consider when you're asking a question to be a mutual exchange. You get the benefit of better insight, and the person answering gets to experience the feeling of having done something nice for you, or having taught you something. The only way they know that they have helped you, is when you tell them so with a thankful response. And sometimes the people who help to decipher readings on here want to learn more about the iching themselves so they can better respond next time, and if you don't say anything it becomes very one sided and draining.
