Sui literally means ‘to follow’. According to the coupled hexagrams, Sui signifies no past, i.e. after line 6 of Yu (Hex 16) makes a change, the hexagram becomes Jin (35) and it advances ahead. In following the sequence, Yu develops to Sui; one should act according to the change and follow the new trend of times.

Sui, the bottom trigram Zhen (quake, the thunder): to move, and the upper trigram Dui (joy, the marsh): joy, is formed after a masculine line of the trigram Qian (perseverance, the sky) descends and stays at the bottom of the trigram Kun (submissiveness, the earth), like a firm and solid (i.e. just and talented) person condescending to a lower post and following the one above, and the one above feels joyous. Sui; great and smooth progress; it is advantageous (or appropriate) to persist; no calamity (or fault).

According to Tuan Zhuan (Confucius’s commentary on the hexagram text), the world moves in following time, i.e. the world changes according to the change of time, so people should adjust in a timely manner and perform appropriately in accordance with occasions.

The trigram Zhen is in the east, while the trigram Dui is in the west; the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. People follow time (i.e. the changes of day and night) to work and rest. Thus, Confucian commentary on its image advises that a gentleman should go indoors for rest after nightfall.

According to Xi Ci Zhuan, Sui is a hexagram of land transportation, like driving an ox cart and riding on a horse, carrying the heavy load and reaching far distances in order to benefit the world.

Yes, Wilhelm p.333. Sui visually resembles a yoke. It also resembles a wine vessel.

Zhu buttons commonly occur on the Jue 爵. I do not understand their purpose. The Jue is sometimes referred to as a 'mug' but looks more like a tripod pitcher. I take 17.6 "(We see) the king with it presenting his offerings on the western mountain" (Legge) to refer to the use of the Jue in a mountain-top offering.

In the era of Sui, people act in changes, i.e. people must make adjustments and follow the trend of the times. To follow in a timely manner requires immediate action; thus each line acts in following the line friendly (i.e. the neighboring line which is different in gender) and next to it.

Line 1`
57966444.png
Normally, the feminine is designated as the one submissive to the masculine. Here the masculine line 1 follows the feminine line 2, signifying the originally assigned job has changed. The governmental post has changed; it is auspicious to persist (in following); there are merits obtainable by going outdoors to associate (with others, i.e. to follow the feminine line). The environment has changed from the hexagram Yu (wherein it is instrumental in establishing the ducal state and dispatching the troops) to the hexagram Sui, like the king launching the sacred war, one who wants to achieve merit must leave home and follow the king’s expedition, i.e. one should leave what one used to be and act with changes. Thus line 1 follows line 2 which is in correlation with line 5, the king and the one full of merit.

Line 2
99373253.png
In actuality, line 2 follows the young child, i.e. line 1 next to it, instead of an adult, line 5, as ‘to follow in a timely manner’ is an imminent demand. Thus, line 2 is tied up with a young child (i.e. to follow the masculine line), (and thus) loses the mature man. At the phase of ready to start action, it is important to decide what is aimed to. Line 2 loses what is right to follow because an immediate solution is wanted and he can’t take a long term consideration.

Line 3
41587146.png
Once one has grown up (along the timeline), one should follow the adult instead of the young child; then one can attain what one aims to achieve due to following the right person or guide. Line 3 sustains the masculine line 4; it follows line 4 and deserts the feminine line 2, signifying one is developing upwards. Line 3 is tied up with a mature man, (thus) loses the young child. Sui (to follow) will attain what it asks for; it is advantageous (or appropriate) to persist in remaining steadfast.

Sorry! I forget completing my presentation

Usually the line in the bottom trigram is taken for people who is out of office and the line in the upper trigram, people in office. After having frequently changed in following, line 4 arrives at the courtier’s position where it should be very prudent in following, i.e. very discreet in avoiding following unjustified, vested interests and ignoring righteousness. Line 4 is friendly and next to line 3; thus it occupies (i.e. follows) line 3 that has the same function as line 5, full of merit, but ignores line 5, the king. Sui (to follow) has attainments; it is ominous to persist. (To exhibit) sincerity & trust, (and to remain) within the norm (or along the course), by which to make (these) clear; how could it be calamitous (or a fault)? If this line makes a change to the feminine, and to sustain line 5, i.e. to act righteously and exhibit its loyalty, the upper trigram will become Kan (the abyss, water): sincerity & trust and the hexagram will become Zhun: difficult to initiate (3), wherein gasses are collecting momentum in order to make a breakthrough in sprouting, and line 4 of Zhun allies with line 5 and moves forth together.

Sincerity & trust at the optimum status, auspicious. Optimum signifies favorable changes between the masculine and the feminine; here it refers to the favorable interaction between the leader and the adherent. Lin 5 at the king’s position is the one followed by others; it righteously acts at the core position, or with the principle of moderation, so line 4 changes to the feminine and the inner bottom trigram becomes Kun (submissiveness, the earth): the people, who loyally sustain line 5; while line 5, the representative line of the trigram Kan, sincerely & trustworthily deals with them. Provided that line 5 is activated and changes to the feminine, the hexagram will becomes Zhen: the thunder (51), wherein the successor proves to be a competent leader (after having successfully undergone trials).

Line 6 has accomplished its missions; it can immune from following and deserves to live leisurely and careless like flying clouds in the sky; hence it must be reverently restrained in following common customs. To detain by tying (it) up; then (it) submits to being bound. The king assigns (it) to take charge of offering sacrifices in the ceremony on Mountain West. Usually after the line has passed its full development at position 5, position 6 is an honored post (for retirement), especially when the upper trigram is Dui (joy, the marsh); it is a person with moral prestige and respected by the virtuous king. The hexagram that appears while this line is activated, signifies Wu Wang: to be pragmatic (25), i.e. to pragmatically make adjustment and do what is deserved; it is possibly the advice.

According to Xi Ci Zhuan, Sui is a hexagram of land transportation, like driving an ox cart and riding on a horse, carrying the heavy load and reaching far distances in order to benefit the world. The trigram Zhen is in the east, while the trigram Dui is in the west; the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The gentleman follows time (the changes of day and night) to work and rest. Thus, the commentary on its image advises that a gentleman should go indoors for rest after nightfall.

Lin 5 at the king’s position is the one followed by others

The text for line 5 does not state who is following whom, but I think you are correct in this. The line mentions confidence (fu), and it appears that the confidence of those who are following is improving (jia). It is helpful to compare and contrast this line with line 5 of Hexagram 58 in which confidence is falling away/eroding (bo). Also notice that dui is the upper trigram for both Hx 17 and Hx 58, and when line 5 of Hx 58 changes it becomes zhen above and dui below.
