Hex 18.6 : Divorce?

Hello all,

A friend of mine is going through some rough time in her marriage and she does not know where it is leading to.

She asked, "Please give me a picture of my marriage in year 2012"

Hex 18.6>46

She has sought for my opinion and I am not sure whether I am interpreting this moving line appropriately. Perhaps Yi learners here can chip in some ideas.

I have interpreted as leaving the man behind and advance to a new tree. Maybe something will happen in year 2012, and its the final straw .... for the marriage.

It certainly could mean moving on. Line 6 does talk about withdrawing form worldly concerns and answering to a higher authority, and then the new beginning in 46. But considering the way the question was phrased, it could also mean both parties in the marriage withdrawing from worldly concerns and focusing on the higher power/spiritual center in the relationship, and maybe moving on to a new beginning and finally beginning to push through those obstacles and get past the corruption indicated in hexagram 18. Divorce usually entrenches one in worldly concerns, dividing things up, who will pay for what, lawyers and all that, while at the same time, I have to admit, I became much more attuned to my own spirituality when I got divorced. I think the context is really important here. If the trouble in the marriage has been over worldly concerns like money, material things, etc. it could even mean finally working toward a solution. Does it seem plausible that they could work things out?

If she does want to work it out, I think doing something new can be great for long term relationships. When is the last time they did something completely new to both of them? Maybe something new would be good for them, ya know, when the timing is right. Something that gets them away from worldly concerns and more in touch with their spirit. May help them remember when they first fell in love. Couldn't hurt to keep it in mind. I don't know the details of their situation, so this all may be a moot point. Unfortunate to have that going on over the holidays. I wish the best for her, and I hope she finds some answers soon.

You know what I feel this answer could be saying to you this isn't your problem and you actually have more important things to do than serve this friend.


In 18.6 we stick 2 fingers up to the authority in any situation....we don't have to serve here, it isn't our problem, we go our own way. Could apply to her but I feel it may apply to you

I agree with your reading, tifa. The marriage is sick (hexagram 18), and line 6 suggests near its end. Hexagram 46 mentions departure. The marriage is likely to have additional stresses during the holidays.

This man of hers used to be super good and supportive . She was once depressed in her life and he was there for her. But after the "yes i do" process, everything appears to go down from there. She thinks that things are not the same as before and she is very unhappy.

I was in a dilemma as well.... as Hex 18 can be viewed as fixing the faults and get moving to a new level. It could be a new growth of the current relationship or get a new man in her life.
But judging from her situation, the moving line appears to sum up her problem.

"He does not serve kings and princes,
Sets himself higher goals."

Yes, I suppose if you look at the hexagrams without rose colored glasses it does seem less hopeful for the marriage. I couldn't help but consider that angle though. I hope she gets through it with as little trouble as possible. Happy Holidays to everyone!

Here's an quick update if anyone is interested.

The marriage fell apart, and my dear friend has moved on. Something happened in the month of july - august and love between the two fell apart. By December, it was completely over.
