Hi all,
can someone share their thoughts about this hex?
My question was - can you point me to reasons why my hair is falling?

First to say, I never asked questions regarding health, and I wasn't sure if I'll be able to understand the answer. I have this problem for 2-3 years, and since I'm a young woman this is really frustrating.
My doctor wasn't of much help. I've made a few tests (blood test, hormone tests) and everything was perfectly fine.
So I just thought maybe iching can point me to something.

The title of this hex - repair/work on what has been spoiled is very indicative.
I would appreciate if you could share some thoughts on this.

Hello ChocolateCookie (I like your username!),

I can think of a few possibilities for your reading.

  • 18 can refer to hidden causes of a problem, or the roots of it. It might mean that you and your doctor should keep digging.

  • It might be a very literal statement that your hair is falling out because the "roots" are dying. That might be too literal to be what Yi means - it's like saying someone died because their heart stopped, when something else was the real reason. But the root is the only part of a hair that's living, so if it dies, the hair falls out, and again, 18 can mean "root" cause.

  • 18 can also mean hereditary or ancestral "curses." I guess in ancient China they believed trouble was caused by angry ancestors, and this was the hexagram that represented that. Of course we know thinning hair can be hereditary, and it can apply to both men and women (I don't know which you are). Depending on your age and family history, this could be the most statistically-likely reason.

  • Hopefully a highly unlikely reason - literal poison. That's one meaning for the ancient Chinese character Gu. LiSe Heyboer is an expert on the old characters; you can read what she says about hexagram 18 here, here, and here. (Note - again, highly unlikely, and even if true it could be accidental or environmental, not someone trying to murder you!)
Another couple thoughts, not from the reading. 1 - maybe it's purely age-related (depending on how old you are). I'm pretty sure almost everyone's hair worsens with age, and it doesn't mean something is "wrong," it's just a normal part of aging. (Note: am not saying we have to like it. ;)) 2 - if you're a woman and of this age, it could be related to menopause. You said you had hormonal tests done and they were normal, but I think "normal" is different pre- and post-menopause.

Having said all this, some of these possibilities are so obvious I'm surprised your doctor didn't mention them. Unless you're 30 years old - then the "obvious" things are out the window and you should not be losing your hair.

Thank you lisa for this big explanation.

I'm a woman in late twenties, so it shouldn't be age related.
My doctor isn't really interested in this topic. Maybe some specialized clinics would be more interested in finding a reason.

It could be that the roots are dying. I don't know if there's a therapy for that, and again, why nobody said something about it.

For the genetics part, I asked my mother, and she doesn't remember anyone being bald in the family.

I must admit, I wasn't looking at this hex from that side - poison and curses.
This hex really has some deep and serious meanings, hopefully it's not that.

I was thinking maybe it's stress related. Or I should keep digging to find a reason?

18 also means "worms". Have you noticed anything abnormal on the skin of your scalp? (just to exclude the ringworm and piedra fungi). It's not a hexagram of stress as such, although too much stress for sure poisons our bodies. How about other 'poisons', e.g. chemicals in the particular hair products you use?

I'm thinking at your age it is either stress related or an underactive thyroid gland.

I think you said you had all relevant blood tests though.

I'd think this answer was an encouragement to keep searching for a remedy of some kind so I agree with you when you say

No, there's nothing abnormal on the skin. I'm very much into healthy lifestyle, so I'm picky with my diet and everything I put on the skin/hair. But with cosmetics I can't be sure, that could be the reason.

Yes, I also checked thyroid gland, everything was ok.

I agree, this hexagram is saying there's work to be done.

Hey

Just my my two cents, before I moved to the Philippines i was developing an small bald spot at the back of my head alot of men get it but i have always had a full head of hair i\'m 48.
I really didnt want accept it. I was told that it comes down to stress, not sure how that can relate to 18 although Lisa may know as she appears to have a very good understanding of hexagram 18.

I tried a product called minoxidil 5% and you wouldnt believe it , it worked.
The hair grew back plus my stress levels are much lower, there is an episode of the simpsons where Marges hair is falling out due to stress as well.

Minoxidil 5% works best in the early stages of hair loss and you must lower your stress levels.

There's also (apparently, I'd never heard of it) something called alopecia, which that article says is an autoimmune disorder.

I don't know if 18 says "autoimmune disorder," maybe under the heading of "keep investigating causes."

I have always found hexagram 18 to be that, do your best to find the cause and do your best to fix it.

Minoxidil 5% they were experimenting on something else and found that alas it makes hair grow. I have noticed more women these days with thinning hair where as it appeared to me to be mainly men. Maybe its the new world or just the way i observe things now. My loss of hair was stress for sure.

I heard about alopecia, but since nobody wanted to tell what is the main problem with my hair, I forgot about it.
I'm also taking multivitamin supplements for hair, but there's no improvement.

Tnx Steve for sharing your experience.
I was reading about that product, and reviews were mainly positive, but people also said that it worked until they were using it, but when they stopped using it, hair started falling out again.
Have you experienced something like this? Or any other side effects?

Can i ask you? are you stressed out in general or is it possible?, many times hair loss is connected with that. Sometimes you dont even know your stressed its just a way of life you think, but when you unwind you realise how wound up you are or were. Try a yoga class or something if so, if you cant go on a holiday.
Not sure if you know the feeling like after a 2 week holiday and you feel better, you think man i feel better i must have been stressed out or after you get a massage.

Its quite common hair falling due to stress.

Yes, I was going through some major changes and it was very stressful. But the worst is over (or not, saturn's return is approaching :D).
I'm working on many new things now, maybe that also relates to 18.
I always have positive and optimistic attitude so I was thinking I'm handling stress fine.
Yes, I was on vacation 2 months ago, trying to relax.
Still I fear there's maybe more to this.
Ahhh if I could just see some improvement.
