I mentioned reading on the Li Tao Ch'un, hexagram #24 (return) being connected to meditation taoist practices, namely the start of the internal cure method by gathering vitality. I really wish I could read some more on this stuff, cause the translation I have is really laconic, not going into great details. But it says there that vitality arises from being calm (earth) and open (heaven) and is gathered in a subtle way that Im not really sure I understand, let alone try to explain it. I imagine it to be similar to the concept of the hua tou, where you try to get to what is behind our consciousness, the real *I* pulling the strings, instead of the puppet we normally think we are. This is done by keeping a state of doubt in mind, this state disengages normal ego functioning, and is obtained by concentrating on a paradox, like LiSe's favorite, the sound of one hand clapping. My hua tou is merely "who am *I*, and when I get to the *I*, I feel this weird feeling of being somewhat swept away out of this world. It is a feeling of being out of me, observing my ego from outside, and realizing Im not my body or even my feelings and thoughts. I can focus on that feeling without the words, and it puts things in a new perspective.
What I think is interesting, is that by constantly asking who we really ARE, we get to a point where we are behind the thought, just before it emerges, and *that*, from what I can figure, is the mystical meaning of hexagram #24.
BTW, if youre into zazen meditation with a twist, this "antecedent recollection" concept is stressed in the site http://www.darkzen.com (see the DZ meditation method to start, its worth it, even if the site and the term "dark" are a bit misleading http://www.darkzen.com/teachings/methoddzm.htm )
