I have feelings for a friend of mine and wonder if there is a time to take action. Much depends on how he feels about me. I asked: “Show me an image of this man as he relates to me.”
Answer: Hex 33 Retreat with changing line 3, then hex 12, Stagnation, solid.

About Hex 33 I found this:
"...retreat is not a matter to be decided willfully by man, but a natural process. Withdrawal in these circumstances is proper and natural. Withdrawal means success. Persistence in small matters is nevertheless to one’s advantage."

Given the phrasing of my question, does this mean HE has retreated from me?

Also: "In certain situations a retreat is in effect an advance. A strong yang line is in the fifth place, the place of the ruler. All other lines respond to it. All actions take place in accordance with the times. As young plants grow when properly watered, so persistence in small matters brings advantage. A withdrawal at the proper time presages success.
The mountain stands below heaven. The Superior Man, keeping his distance from men of inferior character is not angry but dignified.

Line 3: Delay in withdrawal is frightening and dangerous. But retaining the servants and concubines brings good fortune.

It is the retainers and their lack of initiative that occasions the delay. The most obvious course is to abandon them to their fate. But the Superior Man who engages them in his service takes the initiative and leads them out of danger. He has made a step in the right direction."

I'm not sure what the significance of this line is. Anyone have any idears?

For the second hex, 12/Stagnation:

"Heaven and Earth are not in proper communion with each other and so there is a lack of understanding between all kinds of men. Matters do not have free course and conditions are unfavourable to the firm and correct behaviour of the Superior Man. The inner trigram is made of weak yin lines, and the outer of strong yang lives. So the way of the inferior appears to be increasing, and that of the superior waning.

Heaven and Earth stand divided, the image of stagnation. The wise man withdraws into himself and conceals his true quality. In this way he avoids the calamities that threaten him, but he will not be rewarded or honoured. Where lack of communication leads to chaos, disunion or disharmony, things could reach a deadlock. It is better to withdraw and find strength within. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Action leads to misfortune. "

From this I gather he is hiding from me? Is that it?

Prior to this I asked the Yi, "what can i do to help my rel'ship with him" and the answer was pretty definitive (I thought) with hex 49.1 (stop and consider your intentions/the wise man will refrain from changes til time is ripe) and hex 31 wooing. (but i am not sure who is wooing. At this point no one is, we are only friends!)

Thanks in advance for any help interpreting this.

I think 33.3 can refer to times one has the feeling that one has to continue an association with someone/something because they have become indispensable - or at least are 'useful to retain as servants' - but one doesn't really want to, yet it is probably in ones best interests - the idea being i think perhaps one should never have allowed this influence so much hold in the first place, but now it is there better make use of it.

How this relates to your question i can' really say - i didn't exactly understand your question.

The question asks IC to respond from teh man's viewpoint. So here's my take:
33 - he is staying small and not getting emotionally entangled.
33.3 - He has a few issues he needs to work through at the moment.
12- How he relates to you is being blocked by people / things going on.

49 - Change your tack. Act with Confidence.
49.1 - Wait for the right moment.
31 - Bring together what belongs together.

Happy hunting.

I'm another who does not understand your question.

It seems to be saying not to try any action here just leave the relationship as it is at present, a friendship.

Trojan and WF -- Mike's take was correct in terms of what I was asking the Yi. I was asking it to give me HIS point of view.

Mike - thank you so much! That is interesting about hex 12 and the blocking, because I feel that too. In other words, I've been prompted to ask this question partly bc i sense that blockage. He *is* going through a lot now and I think he doesn't fully understand it himself. I want to find out more about the timeline although I know that's a fragile issue with the Yi.

That hex 31 certainly seems to suggest that when the time is right I will be able to hint at my feelings and good will come of it. *when* said time is, that I do not know.
+++++

Last night I asked a couple of more questions. The first was "how is this sitch likely to develop if I just let it be?" Answer is Hex 21 the Biting, w/changing lines 1, 4 and 6 to Hex.2 Receptive.

This "biting" hex is interesting. It is described as follows:

21. Shih Ho / Biting Through

above Li The Clinging, Flame

below Chên The Arousing, Thunder

The Judgement
Biting Through has success.
It is favorable to let justice be administered.
The Image
Thunder and lightning:
The image of Biting Through.
Thus the kings of former times made firm the laws
Through clearly defined penalties.

In hexagram 21, problems are solved through the establishment of laws as part of the process of moving from chaos, or an old established order (50), to order.

"He signifies successful progress. It is advantageous to seek justice.
Union is brought about by biting through the intervening obstacles and the hexagram indicates successful progress. Yang and yin lines are equally divided in the figure. Thunder and movement are denoted by the lower trigram, brightness and intelligence by the upper.
Thunder and lightening are the manifestation of the sudden release of built-up tensions in nature. A yin line occupies the fifth place, the place of the ruler. Although this not its proper position, it is advantageous for the processes of law.
Thunder and lightening are the symbol of biting through. The kings of old, therefore, framed their laws with care, making the punishment fit the crime.

Line 1 - "A deviation occurs. It is punished. Social Balance must be maintained."
His feet are locked in the stocks. His toes are gone. No reproach.
The interpretation of this line has provoked much disagreement among Chinese scholars. The first and sixth lines are considered to represent the man who suffers punishment, the rest represent whose who impose the penalties. For western readers the stocks is only a mild form of punishment and they have interpreted ‘his toes are gone’ as meaning the toes are hidden by the wooden beam of the stocks. On the other hand, cutting off a man’s toes was a specific Chinese punishment, and the penalty described here may be a rather more severe one than is generally supposed. But no matter whether the punishment is light or severe, this line indicates plainly that it is fully justified.

Line 4 -- "In law there are times when it's rigidity makes achieving results difficult. One must get to the core of the matter for success, avoid the technicalities."
Biting through dried gristle and bone he receives the arrows demanded. It is advantageous to realize the difficulties for perseverance brings good fortune.
In a civil law case in ancient China, it was customary for the litigants to bring to court a bundle of arrows. **The case is a hard one to judge, and it is only by recognizing all the difficulties involved that one can find the persistence to reach a just conclusion.**

"[With enlightement comes direction].
Thunder, lightning. Biting through (Revealing the essential).
In primal times one heightened awareness by enforcing the laws through flogging."
In a context of enlightenment, a new beginning, we utilise setting a direction (an ideology).

line 6 - "The professional law breaker can no longer distinguish good from bad. He is deaf to the law. Irrespective of the punishment, he is dedicated to darkness."

and receptivity -- "Kun represents also what is great penetrating, advantageous, correct, and having the firmness of the Mare. The hexagram consists entirely of Yin lines, feminine, yielding and shaded.
Kun brings supreme success through steadfast acceptance. When the Superior Man takes the initiative in action he will go astray. He is much better to assist others. He is better to be practical and sensible.
The creativity of Kun is complete; all things owe their birth to it, and it obediently accepts the influence of heaven, supporting, and containing containing all things.
Kun denotes the great capacity and sustaining power of the Earth. The Superior Man therefore, employs his virtue in supporting all men and all things."

Any insights?

P.s. I had also asked this question last night. I'll post both in hopes of getting feedback on this one as well. it is perhaps the most unclear of the readings this far for me at least.

"What do I need to understand about him?" Hex.64.2.6 --> 16

64: Before Completion. Success.
But if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing,
Gets his tail in the water,
There is nothing that would further.

The Image: Fire over water:
The image of the condition before transition.
Thus the superior man is careful
In the differentiation of things,
So that each finds its place.

line 2 - Not the right time to continue. One stops in time. (he stops? or I stop? or should?)

line 6 - Even celebration has it's difficulties. (He encounters challenges with...celebrating?)

Am I correct that this means he is not yet completed (similar to the hex 12 blockage)?

16 Enthusiasm -- what is the significance of this? He is enthusiastic (??)

If i had received 33.3 when asking how someone thought of me I personally think would hold back and question the basis of our connection - becuase it may look like this person is around purely for circumstantial reasons, ie your're in their group etc. Quite honestly it really wouldn't encourage me to ask them for a date, lol !

This with your 49,1 would suggest you are better leaving htis as friendship just for now at least.

Again i think 64 to 16supports this - don't go rushing ahead too fast here. 16 can often refer to building castles in the air, making ready expectantly - but it doesn't promise what is expected is for real. Line 6 in 64 talks about being over confident, having some success but misfortune if you lose you head in celebration. This could mean hes a good friend, things may be going well but don't get over excited and lose your dignity. Actually this reading looks a little favourable, its like if you act with restraint perhaps things can move forward.

As for your 21 to 2 it could perhaps indicate that if you leave things as they are you may have to encounter knowing truth/facts about your relationship you find a little hard to get to grips with - but at least you will see things as they really are (2) whereas if you rush in now i feel you may not be in possession of the full picture of his position to you.

As you are no doubt aware theres many ways to look at a reading, thats just my take as if i were interpreting for myself. Overall i don't see these answers as encouraging you to rush full speed ahead at all - but it is important you go with what you feel the answer means for you - and also others may see it differently :D

Yikes. Thanks Trojan. Well those messages are consistent in the "dont rush ahead" advice. Your interpretation, while more negative, seems more consistent with what I know of the situation. I would love of course to believe that I could rush forward at this point but that's unwise and it seems now, unrealistic as well. I won't go into along detailed explanation of why, but I do think this interpretation is correct. The element of me being part of a group or of him sort of "keeping my friendship" for ulterior motives has arisen recently but I dont have enuf information to give it full credit. This reading supports my suspicions however. The only hex that doesnt jive with that is the 64-14 possibility of moving forward favorably. There are murky waters here (and I knew this before the reading) but I suppose I won't know more for several months. Already much has been revealed about him that I never knew before, so I'm curious where it will go from here.

Thank you!
