Hex 39 for my 39th birthday

Howdy folks! Well, my birthday was just the other day (the 4th) and I've turned the big 3-9. For the past few years I've given myself a birthday I Ching reading asking "What's the outlook for the next year of my life?" In past years I've felt fairly confident in what I thought the I Ching was telling me, but this time around feels a little different. This reading I received Hex 39 with lines 2, 5, and 6 changing to Hex 18. What's stumping me on this one is that I realize that there are two different ways of interpreting the reading. My first instinct was to think that over the course of the next year I will overcome some sort of obstacle or obstacles to begin working on something that has been spoiled. I felt happy and confident with that interpretation... until I began to really ruminate on the reading....

The second thought that comes to me is that since many people believe that Hex 39 is about halting any and all action due to obstacles that have come up, that my reading may be telling me that any work that's being done on what has been spoiled will have to come to a halt and go on hiatus during this year because of obstacles that are about to come up in front of me. But considering that as far as any working on what has been spoiled that's been done up until now, I have to confess that I really have not done a lot of it. But still... I may not have had to have done very much up until now in order for obstacles to come up anyway.

Does anyone have an opinion on which interpretation I may want to lean more towards?

And I do realize how funny it is that I received Hex 39 for a reading done for my 39th birthday...

I know no not to cast on my 44th then....
I think you should read this cast as a very intimate one, really...kind of listen to yourself, observe your own rhythms, feel the time for pausing your plans, consult, IC tells you will get help and support from others when needed and moderately out of the obstacles here you go, right into liberating 40s

In one of the old chinese myths a big/tall man appears. He is a kind of god but lives with the ordinary people on earth. The people on earth at that time were not able to make fire and were freezing a lot. They heard that in a region very far away a huge tree spending constantly warmth could be found. The tall man decided to travell to this region and get seeds and branches of that tree. On his journey he had to master many challenges, fighting with monsters and so on to get there.... however, he made it and returned home with the knowledge of making fire. This was a great, great blessings to the people.

The tall man did 'work' for his people and overcoming obstacles makes one obviously tall

The reading to me sounds fortunate. At times some obstacles have to cross ones way...

lilly, I really love hearing about different culture's fire myths. I hope to one day start to learn more ancient Chinese mythology.

blue_angel: I hope you're right. Deep down in my gut I already kinda wondered the same thing. If i reconcile with anyone it will be with family. I guess it may be time to stop being so bitter. I guess bitterness is one of the biggest obstacles many people have.

Howdy folks! Sorry it has taken so very long for an update. Honestly, the only thing that stands out about that year is that my grandmother died in January 2014. I really felt nothing in regard to her passing, and I didn't even attend the funeral. I know this sounds terrible of me, but she was a cold, unloving woman who tried to over-control everyone around her, espcially her daughters and grand-daughters. I had already distanced myself from her years before.

As for mentioning how bitter I was those 5 years ago, nothing has changed. I'm still as angry and bitter as ever. The only thing I can make of that Hex 39 moving to Hex 18 reading I gave myself back then was that it would be a year of me working on some emotional processes, going back and forth between emotional stuckness and trying to repair emotional damage.

Thanks for the update, artio. I think it's interesting to look at the sequence leading up to 39. Obstruction as it seems to fit so well with the idea that 39. referred to your obstructing grandmother.
37. Family.
38. The two siblings trying to differentiate between themselves as they struggle to branch out and find their individual paths....
39. Obstruction. ...But the old ways limit the new generation.
(and must be broken through at 40. Breakthrough)

39. seemed to you to describe your grandmother who seemed to try to limit her daughter and granddaughters.
Then 18. Repair pointing to the potential for repair of the harm done by her limiting influence.
