Hi.

I recently received Hex 43 unchanging - my exact question "Should I follow Dr. XYZ's course of treatment..."

Some history. I have been struggling with GERD for about half a year now and am doing this and that about it - most of it "natural". Unfortunately, things did not pan out. Now I decided to try Alleopathic Medicine for a change and wanted to ask the Yi if this would be the right course of action for me. I took this reading after meeting Dr. XYZ and taking a couple of doses of his prescription.

And I get - in my experience - the most confusing hexagram. That too UNCHANGING!!!

Huang calls this gua "Eliminating" - and goes on to describe the 'situation' where "evil" is eliminated. Makes sense - seems positive. Wilhelm names this gua "Break Through (Resoluteness)" and starts out by describing a "breakthrough after a long accumulation of tension". Straightforward enough and very positive - yippie!!

But then I read the text of the decision and I cannot make head or toe of it. Not in this particular situation. Help me out with it. Because its not a straight forward positive - this gua.

Some real life experience or examples will be much appreciated.

This is a pretty straight answer. It tells you to decide. As I may have said before often the I Ching gives our question back to us because it is something we can decide for ourselves.

So trust your own judgement and common sense here. if this were a friends decision what would you tell her ?

It isn't telling you what to do it is asking you to decide, because you are quite capable of deciding.

What do you think ?

It's also quite a sharp answer I think. Stop prevaricating, be clear, make a choice ! You have all the information you need to make the right choice for you.

43 is about actively taking a position on something. We try to avoid that.....to let things drift or let others decide. Here you can't . It's up to you. But don't be vague and wishy washy, decide what to do then do it.

Sorry...misread your question. You have already seen the Dr, it is now a choice about medication.

Well still I think it looks to be your choice. You already have the Drs advice, I don't know what GERD is....but you will already know if you want to use the medication or not.

ummm...trojan...I dunno.

The only source interpreting this gua in this way is Ewald Berkers (eclecticenergies.com). I'm a fan - he has some very different interpretations in many cases. Very illuminating too. Here's his decision on the Gua :

43. Deciding

Deciding.
Making it known at the king's court.
Crying out the truth is dangerous.
Telling the city oneself,
it is a disadvantage to be close to battle.
It is beneficial to have a goal to move to.

But even if we were to take this interpretation of the Gua name - the text of the decision is still pretty unclear. Thats what I really cannot understand.

Any real life experiences with this one?? Anyone....

Yes plenty ! Plenty of experience with 43uc. You are hanging on words of various authors getting confused when you have a clear answer . Do you imagine the answer says 'yes take meds' or 'no don't take meds' ?

People like Ewalds commentaries because he simplifies the text so much he makes it seem clear. But much is lost with that kind of simplification IMO.

I wouldn't use his text for anything nor do I rely wholly on others commentaries...I've consulted long enough to have my own ideas as well as others. 43 is quite a clear call to make a decision so why are you unwilling to make it ? Yi isn't going to make it for you here IMO

Also you asked a yes/no question so if you just want a yes/no you could toss a coin ?

when i get 43 about decisions I spend some time pondering on W/B commentary and especially the
" Passion and reason cannot exist side by side" part. Maybe it doesn't give a direct answer but it helps to have an idea of why you can't decide .

Eliminating is an interesting word ( fits with the Image). Problem is what does it mean.
decide by elimination ?
medication will eliminate the ailment ?
or eliminate the medication ?

Trojan, I never expect yes/no answers from the Yi. I do expect advice and usually take a cue from the 'tone' of the answer - especially when I am asking advice regarding moving forward with something or not. This time I am unable to figure out :)

Anemos, I did read that part in Wilhelm's commentary too. That I can figure out. I have a 'passion' for Natural Medicine / Cures but since they are not working, maybe - and I repeat maybe - the Yi is telling me to get over myself and just start taking the medicine. Reason over passion.

But then, as Trojan pointed out - this could just be an optimistic bias from my end. Interpreting the reading in a way that gives me hope that this might be the "Break-Through" that "Eliminates" the problem. Only time will tell - I should find out in a few days to a week. I will keep you updated.

It wonderful having your inputs on the same. Thanks a ton.

 I haven't said that anywhere . You must have imagined it. Please show me where I have said it is an optimistic bias from your end. I've not mentioned the words 'optimistic' or 'bias' or even implied such at all.

Where did you get that from ? Please tell me.

I have been careful to say only this is your choice. It's impossible for an onlooker to know if you should take the medication or not.

The breakthrough may be in taking the medication. if you feel so then it likely is. Anyway you can always try it and see how it goes.

I never expect yes/no answers from the Yi.

ah I thought this

"Should I follow Dr. XYZ's course of treatment..."

was a yes/no question

I think the nub of it is finding out what prevents you from making a decision as Maria suggested

Well, if I could make a decision - I would have NEVER asked the Yi. I am very, very 'conservative' about approaching the Yi. I write a question days in advance and keep going back to it to see if it really necessary to bother the Yi with, if I am asking about the correct aspect, if I am ready for the real answer, if I am repeatedly asking the same question et al.

Ok - the question might sound like a yes/no:) But I never expect the answer to be as such. The Yi always answers questions like this in different ways - sometimes telling me about the situation and what would happen if I did this or that, sometimes telling me to walk another path (a clear 'no'), sometimes telling me to be "steadfast and upright (a pretty clear "go on") - sometimes foretelling grave misfortune if I forge ahead. We just have a conversation - that is what I expect.

I've just found my stride with the Yi about 6 months ago - so I'm a newbie. How would you consult the Yi in this matter...I'm here to learn.

I share your concerns and indecision. I struggle with my own readings whether to keep taking a medication that seems to work but really mess my head. I can see in my readings both yes continue or no . I don't know really if its my wrong way of reading Yi's answers but many times if not always come with at least two strong equally reasonable scenarios that make me say what Trojan said " what if I just toss a coin" and do what the coin said ....

Actually , I think , in a metaphorical way, this is what we do. "toss a coin"... because we can't know everything. I don't mean it in a superficial way as refrain from any responsibility to decide and depend on the random yes /no of the coin. In my case, I was thinking that in order to take an informed decision I should study medicine, pharmacology, chemistry, psychology... etc in order to be able to decide... hahaha. I did think that .. and its the lake of 43 - all those emotions , imo... the "over the head" feeling..
and this is that point of time we need to draw a line , stop accumulating and start eliminating.

At the end of the day, I guess we decide what "story" the reading say... "toss the coin" i.e make a decision and just go with it...

I found this thread really interesting. Not sure if I present clear my thoughts but this cloud in my mind has return... Will be back to continue...

I've nothing against yes/no questions, use them all the time, because generally I can pick up the gist of the answer anyway. I don't think that's so easy if you are a newbie.

In this question, with 43 uc the choice is yours, you have more information on the issue than anyone here...and IMO Yi is simply handing the choice back to you as I said.

You haven't said why you misquoted me....but never mind.

How would you consult the Yi in this matter...I'm here to learn.

I haven't said there was anything wrong with how you consulted. You consulted and you got an answer that advises you to decide......that's all. I have asked Yi about choices and got 43 uc which was an indictation for me to decide. You are imagining I am saying you shouldn't have asked. I'm not. I'm just saying the answer shows that you already know.

Neither Yi nor anyone else holds the key to this decision. It is absolutely in your hands

Nothing more to say here cos everything I have said here has been misunderstood so far by you 'mokumra'

good luck with your choice

bye bye :D

You are a fan of alternative therapies, and probably think that allopathic medicine is for the birds, so I think that's causing the difficulty. My suggestion is that you open your mind on the question and try the new medication for awhile, to see if it helps you.

You asked "How would you consult the Yi"? I think there are difficulties asking medical questions and medication questions of the I Ching. The answers seem harder to interpret than they should be, given our level of understanding in general of Yi's responses. So, in your perplexity you are certainly not alone!

Gennie. Thanks for your reply.

I don't see why / medical or medication questions should be any different.

We always do get a 'vibe' from the Yi's advice. Positive or negative (at the risk of simplifying it to a point of stupidity). Just the basic vibe. Sometimes you don't even need to delve into the depths of what it 'means' or could 'mean'. You essentially do get a yes / no answer...not really but you know what I am saying.

Anyhow. I will wait for a week to 'understand' what the Yi told me.

Did you develop GERD while taking fish oil or omega 3?

Dear Pocossin.

I've never had fish oil or....I don't know what Omega 3 is:)

But since you bought up this thread, for whomever it interests :

1. I should have updated with the results. This is one of those Gua's where you don't even need to read any judgement or interpretation. The diagram is enough. Five yangs "pushing out" the final ying. Strength "pushing out" weakness. DECISION, RESOLUTENESS, BREAK THROUGH - THE FINAL PUSH. That is what this was. Both in context of finally going to a doctor after suffering from this for half a year and even from a personal point of view - enough was enough. Changed my diet, started excercising etc etc.

2. After 'stabalizing' my condition with the medicine suggested by the doctor above, the following helped me actually 'cure' the condition :
a) Half a lemon squeezed into half a cup of luke warm water - twice a day. Nothing to be ingested 30 minutes before or after.
b) An apple a day.
c) A nifty little trick from the book "Soul Mind Body Medicine" - Say the following five sentences to yourself whenever you have an 'attack'. "Dear Soul, Mind and Body of my Stomach and Digestive System"- "I Love You" - "You have the power to heal yourself" - "Do a good job" - "Thank you".

Its as simple as that.

Thanks.

Thank you very much for this answer, it really helped me and let things quite clear.
