Dear Friends,
I am going to start a new job in a company which looks to be quite demanding and intimidating with the responsibilities but also rewarding. I asked the iching to give me a view of my work and career advancement in this company. I received Hexagram 46.2,3 changing to 2. I would welcome your thoughts on this reading. I cannot understand what line 3 means. Is it something bad I should know?

Thanks n Regards,
Carol

Line 3 can indicate progress will be far easier than you think but one may question the value of what is gained. In practise i find it comes up each time a situation I'm anticipating with either dread/excitement just doesn't materialise. Depending on the situation one can experience this as negative or positive i guess. An example dreading very difficult meeting one turns up only to find a note on the door to say its cancelled and so on. Or having great hopes for a project only to find it becomes a bit of a damp squid - just examples

I hasten to add overall your reading looks positive so I wouldn't worry too much about line 3 here, quite the reverse - it may be a less difficult than you think it will be and its possible it will feel a little less challenging than you believe it will be - that could be a good thing depending on your point of view :D

Thanks for the interpretation trojan. May be it wouldn't turn out to be as intimidating as I think it would be. But I would like to know what the two individual lines mean in this reading and whether emphasis should be on the two lines or the resulting hexagram 2. If its the resulting hexagram then I am clueless as to what it means.

About your profesional prospect for the next 12 months in the new company, one would say you are a woman in a leading position, wich style of leadership is based more on cooperativeness than imposition. You seem to have a general good luck, but some difficulties in the short term can arise. However, the company can reduce your energy, just like the Earth reduces Fire. The professional recognition within the company would hide from you, most of all because conflicts with co-workers and subordinates (if you have any of them).
One would say, the conflictivity in the company may lead you to resign before 12 months. But that won't be a mayor lost in the long run.

One would say this, but what do I know?

Theres alot of difference of opinion about the relating hexagram. I see it quite flexibly that it can be the background of the situation or the future tendency - though these sound opposed i don't think they are really if we think of time in a less linear way - and someone clever here once said the relating hexagram is the "sea the primary hexagram swims in"

When I first saw your answer i had the impression you were going to have alot of scope in this job, as if its an empty field, or fertile soil for you to do as you want in. I got that impression from line 3 as well. I also wondered if hex 2 might be referring to your own nature - if you are uncomfortable with taking initiative or control in situations you could feel slightly unsupported here - The transitional hexagram the link between the two hexes here is 15,3 which suggests the way you cope with the situation is in a fairly pragmatic down to earth way, just doing whats needed, keeping a level head, not going out of your way to impress or anything. This is reflected in line 2 of 46 where even a small offering is sufficient and line 3 of 46 I wrote about above.

So my overall feeling is the Yi is counselling you that you have what it takes to do the job, that what you have to offer will be enough. I can't really tell if you are worrying about how you'll cope, but if you are i think your answer is reassuring .

Also if you look at these lines in the hexagram index here you'll probably find alot more information on these lines

I would like to know why you said that conflictivity would lead me to ressign? I really would want to stay with this company for as long as I can. Thats just because I have known the culture there and I cannot see right now any reason for conflict more so because by nature I am the last person one would ever see in any conflict with anyone....but that could turn up in time may be.
I really loved the other perpespective that trojan gave....it is very much the feeling of coping up within me which is being reassured.....partly because I have personally just recently gone through a very testing phase in my life and want to start a positive new life. Yet along with the feeling of uncertainty there strangely is a very strong force within me that pushes me to give my best without worrying too much about the outcome.
Thank you everyone....I love the insight you guys have provided.

Regards
Carol

Hi Carol-
I see it as a good experience and a good education, some learning at first that might humble you a bit, then steady and honest work with gradual advancement.
46.3 might suggest that you might question what kind of opportunity this is - you don't know why the town is empty - is it a trap? Was it cleaned out by a plague? Is the place really yours to occupy? Transitional hexagrams also take you through 15.1 en route to 02, again, just diligence and honest work. The meaning of 02 might be something really simple like you make yourself at home there and feel useful.

I'm having trouble seeing how you arrived at such a conclusion. I don't see any indication of resignation nor the 12 month period. Can you explain?

Hex 46.2 here it says that you will not be in a strong position when you first start your job but give it time and then others will notice your hard work and dedication, you will be highly praised for it.

Hex 46.3 you will then progress easily, nothing will stop you from advancing, so do your very best and don't worry about the future.

Hex 2 says all your efforts will meet with success, just follow what you are told to do and then you won't go wrong.
