Hi! This is my first post. I’ve enjoyed reading through old threads about personal experiences with hexagrams. The discussion helps build the connections for me. I would truly appreciate insight into a hexagram I’ve been getting repeatedly. The question I initially asked was, “What advice will help me on my journey to enlightenment?” Yeah, pretty deep. I’m not always asking about such profound things. Haha I got hex 59 (Dispersion or Dissolution) with changing 1.3.4.6.A day or so later I asked, “What advice to help me illuminate my light?”Again, hex 59 this time changing 1.3.5 Then, yesterday, I asked questions related to my energy with another person (this person triggers my shadow) and as I asked clarifying questions, specifically, trying to figure out “what I need to let go of?” I got, you guessed it...Hex 59 this time changing 4.5Clearly, there’s a pattern here and I need help interpreting this. I have some ideas about it, but mostly I’m stuck. I am VERY interested in what you all have to share with me.I would be grateful for all insights you can provide.

Hi MadamOak,

Why don't you include the related hexagrams? (because it is not possible to understand a change line reading without knowing what the related hex is)

I offer this bit of enlightenment free of charge.

Hi MadameOak,

I think you are seeing it correctly ~ you are 'stuck' on 59?

So, without going into the specific readings ~ let's look at Hex 59 as a step on the path of self-cultivation ~ (this is all just my opinion) ~ embedded in the Yi, itself?

59 Dispersion ~ Letting go of attachments to self-interested outcomes (My Story)
60 Discipline ~ You become auto-regulating for Rightness by nature thru Practice
61 Inner Truth ~ Your 'being' is established in Wu-wei
62 Small Passing ~ Your ego packs its bags and leaves
63 Completion ~ Enlightenment
64 Service ~ Going back for those still "in the dark" about their True Self

The good news is ~ you're close to the end of the trail on the Treasure Map ~ you've almost found the gold!

However, you'll need to get Disciplined about your approach to releasing (Dispersing) your preferences for specific outcomes from the witness position in order to facilitate the 'right' thing happening as your life flows from one situation to the next?

It takes time, and dedication, to consciously and gently wrest control of Awareness from your ego, and Return it to its natural Sovereignty, but it does yield to Presence in the witness position on a moment-to-moment basis and cumulatively results in the reasonable and sensible transfer of control away from the hoarding, scarcity mentality of ego...

...to Trusting in being able to 'see' and 'follow' the Way effortlessly?

The Yi is your guidebook for Mastering the Way-making skill. The whole idea with the Yi is that you will become very attuned to *change* in your life and your World, and start learning to recognize *change* in its incipience ~ at the very first sign that it's happening?

With this knowledge, you can make course corrections in your life simply by nudging the rudder of your sailboat with your big toe ~ it's easy when you catch it early? Without this knowledge, you better get good at repairing your boat, and get used to missing your destinations, too?

When the boat misses the harbor, it is seldom the harbor's fault?

It's like it says in Dao De Jing #63 (Ames):

Take account of the difficult while it is still easy,
And deal with the large while it is still tiny.
The most difficult things in the world originate with the easy,
And the largest issues originate with the tiny.

If you have some familiarity with Daoism, already, then I highly recommend "The Thread of Dao" by Dan G. Reid?

And, if you are coming from a Western perspective and not yet familiar with Taoism, then I recommend "The Untethered Soul" by Michael Singer?

Both books, imho, will make the task of getting past 59's hurdle of preferences, via a disciplined approach to Practice, clear and straightforward.

Good Luck with your quest!

All Best

radiofreewill, I am so grateful for your thoughtful interpretation. A lot of the journey is becoming authentically me. How simple yet so challenging. It’s encouraging that I’ve almost found the gold - just knowing I’m on the right path lifts me up. While the road ahead is relatively long, I know I’m on a worthwhile journey, whether I make it in this lifetime or the next. What you say as it related to ego and manifestation of outcomes resonates. And yes, observing the cycles and changes in Life. Like dancing to live music and just knowing that the song is going to shift because there are subtle signals we can sense when we are connected. I only know the bare minimum about Taoism - like, the Tao of Poo and Te of Piglet minimum. Lol. Will the Thread of Dao be appropriate for me? I will read the Untethered Soul. Thank you for the recommendations :)

Imho, MadameOak, all you need at this point is to acquire a Vision of the Goal ~ and the means of getting to it?

Once you 'see' the Goal, you will naturally reorganize your life around attaining it? If the pearl worth any price confers actualized spiritual immortality, then what could possibly hold you back, right?

The Untethered Soul is divided into four parts. You'll know after part 1 if the book is 'clicking' with you? If you are 'getting' it, then the Vision of the Goal (from the Witness Position) and the path to it (Practice) can arise for you?

So, think of it as curling up with 40 pages of clear and compelling prose (part 1)...which could potentially put the gold within your sight...in this lifetime? Exciting, huh?

Imho, once you read 'The Untethered Soul,' then the essence of 'Thread of Dao' will be very recognizable to you, but honestly 'Thread of Dao' dances on top of the Taoist Classics ~ you might get more out of starting first with Stephen Mitchell's "Tao Te Ching"?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the journey and All Best!

So can we all.

I looked up your related hexagrams:

59.1.3 4.6 (43)
59.1 3 5. (26)
59.4.5. (64)

43 is a decisive but non violent getting rid of someone or something.
26 is about growing up and maturing/domesticating.
64 is something not yet finished.

(maybe this will help)

Yes, this IS helpful. I do feel I need to shed an ego-driven side of myself. That will certainly lead to growth. The something not yet finished. Hmmm. Perhaps the growth itself? As one of the hexagrams refers to my relationship with my shadow-triggering friend, I am quite certain this is all connected to the side of myself I try to keep hidden - even from myself - which leads to inauthentic, ego-driven responses to things.

What advice will help me on my journey to enlightenment?”
I would suggest to define what you mean by 'enlightenment' first.

Is it clearly defined in your mind? (If so, tell us what the word means to you?)

There is no universal consensus among people as to what the word means.
Different religions will offer a spectrum of ideas.
Are you thinking of the Buddhist concept? (And even then which one? Transcendence? Nihilistic escapism? Being filled with wisdom? Or Edification?)

Also, you should that know Taosists aren't Buddhists.

Tell us about your 'shadow'-triggering friend?
(This might be the person that your Maturation (26), will require you to Disperse (59) with?)
(Example: Sandy and Billy are both five years old and enjoy giggling in the corner and eating boogers.
One day Sandy decides there must be a better way of living. So, she gives her stockpile of boogers to Billy (disperses her stockpile) and moves on to her future in fine chalk art, never looking back.)

59-64
It is the Dispersal that is Unfinished.
In 59.4 one disperses some people and rises above.
59.5 is dispersing the stockpile.

Of course I know Taoists aren’t Buddhists. Lol. For me, the term, “enlightenment” is a succinct way of saying I want to be filled with light. I would like to be a positive spirit in supporting the rising up of humanity.

How could I have known? (You started with a Buddhist term, then expressed interest in Taoist books)
Thanks for clarifying. :)

Ah my friend. I would be sad if he were the one I have to let go as I mostly enjoy our interactions. Tricky too, as we work together. He entered my life around the time I started this path and I have been learning a lot about myself via my dynamic with him. Alas, he can be rather immature, so he does fit the criteria.

So, what are the boogers in your situation?

Do you guy watch MMA or the Kardashians together, or drink yourselves sick?

Bwahaha! No none of that. He’s honestly not even all that immature, but he is very playful and brings out that side of me. We laugh a lot. However, we also sometimes bicker like siblings in the back of a car. Never intentionally mean-spirited, we just seem to inadvertently trigger emotions in each other without meaning to. I’ll say something joking and he’ll say I’m being mean or he’ll play around and tease me and I become pouty. That’s partly when all the shadowy stuff bubbles up. It’s over such ridiculous things, but that coupled with a magnetic pull towards each other makes our friendship intense, at times. As a result, I tend to wax and wane and wax and wane with him. To make it clear, in the year we’ve known each other we have never been romantically involved. We just both think the other is adorable and like each other’s company. We have only spent time with each other at work.
