Water under the ground is Shi: the army (hexagram 7), signifying military action, while water above the ground is Bi: intimate, interdependent relationship, which can be regarded as diplomatic alliance. They are the mutually reversed hexagram and two facets of one subject. Bi leads to happiness due to its peaceful coexistence, while Shi creates worry as it is related to war. In ancient times, Bi mainly referred to the political relationship among dukes or between monarch and subject. Nowadays the inter-person relationship is more linked to people’s commercial activities. Hence Bi can be regarded as political coalition as well as commercial cooperation, based on mutual help.

The end of Shang dynasty is a period of rivalry among dukes, it is very important to seek the right alliance and follow the right leader. The right alliance must possess origination (i.e. the spring of goodness) and be everlasting as well as persistence (in righteousness). (The dukes who are) not submissive (to the king) come (for intimate interdependence); it is ominous for one to come late. From the perspective in viewing the hexagram structure, line 5, the king, is not only the masculine line with which all feminine lines are interdependent, but also the representative line of the upper trigram Kan (the abyss, water): peril, signifying Bi contains risks. The intimately interdependent relationship has a critical and long effect on the future; one must be judicious in selecting a partner. Thus, divination must be done twice, i.e. very prudently, and the relation must stem from goodness, must be endurable and persist in righteousness,

According to the sequence, Bi follows after Shi; line 6 of Shi, the ancestral king, had ordered, (in accordance with the achieved merit, to offer) the post of the duke and the clan leader; the villain should not be appointed. Thus, the images of Bi advises that the late king established hundreds of states and maintained intimacy with the dukes, signifying a country is established by force of power, or to dilute the power of local dukes by establishing hundreds of dukedoms and maintain closed relation with each one in order to consolidate the central regime. The changed hexagram of Shi is Tong Ren (13), the goal of which is peoples over the world are one family; the changed hexagram of Bi is Da You: abundant possessions (14), signifying prosperity and opulence, as well as to be possessed by all of peoples.

Bi (to be intimate with) sincerity & trust; no fault (or calamity). Sincerity & trust brim a ceramic jar; further auspiciousness will come at last. Line 1 is at the beginning phase of a hexagram, like a person freshly introduced into society without credit; what he needs in order to obtain intimate and interdependent relation with others is to build up sincerity & trust, which will be a long process, gradually from one’s neighborhood to home town and then finally the palace. The ceramic jar has a very plain appearance but it is full of sincerity & trust inside; once its value is recognized, it will bring another fortune.
The upper trigram Kan is a solid line stroke staying between two feminine lines, symbolizing a reliable heart and signifying sincerity & trust. Line 5 is its representative line, represents sincerity & trust, and is the one with which line 1 intends to build the intimate and interdependent relationship.
On the condition that line 1 needs to be interdependent (i.e. to correlate) with line 5, line 2 must change to the masculine and exchange positions with line 1. While line 2 changes to the masculine, the bottom trigram becomes Kan and exhibits sincerity & trust, i.e. it establishes credit in neighborhood. After lines 1 and 2 exchange positions, the bottom trigram becomes Chen (quake, the thunder); Chen is the ritual vessel that which combines with the inner bottom Kun: the earth, can be regarded as a ceramic jar. The upper trigram Kan is water, as well as sincerity & trust. All these constitute a scene that the ceramic jar is full of water, signifying it is teeming with sincerity & trust, i.e. sincerity & trust pervade in its home town, which results in that it is in correlation with line 5 and recognized by the king. (Please see the attached sketch)

Line 5 is the only masculine line and occupies the king’s position; all the other feminine lines tend to be interdependent with it; the king accepts those who are submissive and deserts those who are resistant, like leaving one side open and letting the prey flee while he is hunting; the people won’t be scared to be interdependent with him; auspiciousness; thus it is a manifested Bi.

Line 2 belongs to the internal (i.e. the bottom) trigram and correlates with line 5; therefore this intimate interdependence with line 5 is from the interior. Both are at their right positions, i.e. act righteously, and at the middle of the bottom and the upper trigram , i.e. behave moderately; thus Bi (the intimate, interdependent relationship) originates from one’s interior; it is auspicious to persist, which won’t result in losing one’s standpoint due to one acting of one’s volition.

Line 4 sustains line 5 which is at the external trigram, signifying it seeks outward interdependence, i.e. to be interdependent with a person of virtue, to follow the one above or to develop upwardly. Thus, Bi (to be interdependent) outwardly; it is auspicious to persist.

Line 6 is the last one to be interdependent with line 5, like a duke who is summoned by the king but coming late; not only it missed the right timing but it also rides over line 5; the feminine riding on the masculine signifies inferiority bulling superiority. Thus, Bi (intimate interdependence) not in the lead; it is ominous.

Line 3 is interdependent with the wrong one; there is a high possibility that it will be hurt as the hexagram will become Jian: difficulty in proceeding (39) after line 3 changes to the masculine to correlate with line 6.Thus, Bi (to be interdependent) with the wrong one, and Confucius commentary on its image says: ‘Won’t it be hurt?

Best regards

Hi Tuckchang,

Or in the alternative, the first 10 hexagrams of the Yi represents the water cycle, with hex 7 being the negative x-axis or the rain water that soaks into the ground while hex 8 is the positive x-axis or the water that runs off along the topography forming the streams, rivers flowing to the sea.

:bows: Cheers,:)
