I applied to a prestigious residency in the summer for emerging artists. I asked "How should I consider my application to x?" and got hexagram 2 unchanging.

I also did another reading with the same question on another day and got Hex 45. 2.5 to Hex 40.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

2 unchanging

Welcome to Clarity, Selkie. It is unclear whether you are referring to the application being accepted or to what you might achieve at x -- what x would do to develop your artistry. I think x could give your the groundwork (2) for a career in your art.

Thanks for the welcome, Pocossin!

My question was about both meanings, but I need to work on being more specific. It's true that it would give me great support..if only. I just found out that I did not get accepted. They had 2,057 applicants and only accept 65 each year.

Now I asked, What do I need to do to be accepted to x next year?
I got 42.2 to 61.

I don't really understand the line of getting tortoise shells. It is a school that awards scholarships, almost everyone accepted gets some kind of aid. I thought maybe I wasn't being direct enough with my question, so I asked,

Am I good enough to be accepted to x?
I got 32.2 to 62

I'm thinking I just need to keep working on my art (I have a show coming up) and not be worried about it and try again next year.

Is this a good take on what the Yi is telling me? I'd love feedback about the readings. And any suggestions/connotations. Thank you!

I don't really understand the line of getting tortoise shells.

Tortoise shells were used to contact the spirits. Off the top of my head, the judges of your application will be looking for technical ability, innovation, spirit. Spirit is the sense of vitality art gives, so art is like a tortoise shell. Thunder changing to Lake in the lower trigrams suggests more softness in your art.

Also, Adele Aldridge might give you some ideas.

Thanks very much for your response, Pocossin! And thank you for including those links. I enjoyed looking at Adele's work.

"Thunder changing to Lake in the lower trigrams suggests more softness in your art."

That is a fascinating interpretation. And coincidentally (or not!), I taught a series of classes about Impressionism, so I am very aware of the artists and their individual techniques, although they all eschewed the moniker. Studying them definitely informed my art and gave me ideas to innovate my technique. Perhaps the softness suggestion is that I should consider the use of light in my work and experiment with blending.

Thanks again for the insight!
