Hi, I lost my mother who suffered a lot during the final year. I struggle with this to think that she was such a loving beautuful person and her final experience in this world was full of suffering. I asked the I ching if she experienced a sense of peace and happiness after she died so that her final experience was a good one, and I got 25.3. Are the villagers me and the traveller my mum. I'm not really sure whether it is answering my question as to whether she has experienced peace after death which is what I really wanted to know.

Hi BytheRiver - yes I think she’s the Traveller that’s gained by her Passing and the resulting Hexagram 13 is Harmony.
I also believe it says to not stay Entangled with your concerns about her, it will only cause you more grief that the loss is already caused.

So sorry for your loss BytheRiver, it must be very hard.
The line speaks of someone stealing away something valuable from someone.
I'm assuming the thief here is illness, it stole your mum's life.
13 shows turning to friends for support. I hope you have a good support system. Sending you best wishes.

Dear becalm and diamant, thank you so much for you quick replies. It has been eight months since my mother died and the inquest only took place this week so it brought back all the memories of her bad experience. Becalm - I agree that I need to become disentangled from those final few years and I have decided that I am now going to try and make an effort to concentrate on how she was before she got ill and to remember our good times together, the pain will still be there but I must try. Diamant - I have support from my chaplain and a couple of friends, but not family unfortunately. I'm also part of a grief group which helps. Best Wishes and thanks for your kind thoughts.

I asked ... if she experienced a sense of peace and happiness ... so that her final experience was a good one, and I got 25.3.
Hex. 25.3 includes the trigram (three line figure) Thunder below, and trigram Heaven (or the Creative) above. With the 3rd moving line, Thunder becomes Flame (the lower part of Hex. 13).

The 'movement' or transformation here: your mother experienced death as a shock, but this transformed into a sense of clarity and safety (13's Flame). The line is:

25.3: cow was tethered (but) is the wanderer’s gain ....

She has been untethered from her former life and body, and is now free to wander, where she can experience: Fellowship with Others (Hex. 13), with includes clarity, security and warmth (Flame), and a sense of higher purpose / existence (The Creative or Heaven). It has been, as Hex. 13 says, worthwhile to cross the great stream.

I get a sense that after a bit of a rough start to her journey, she's now doing fine!

Thanks dfreed. I think your statement about "a rough start to her journey" is uncanny. This is because she reallly wanted to live. So initially she would have resisted not being alive. But I am glad that the iching has indicated that she ultimately experienced peace.

Hi

I lost my mother, she was 52 to a brain tumour, I just turned 53 last June so I have outlived her.

In this case, the line is complicated, however, I believe you are being advised to accept this death as a bad part of your life,

Remember, the oracle speaks to you no-one else

Wilhelm/Baynes: Undeserved misfortune. The cow that was tethered by someone is the wanderer's gain, the citizen's loss.

My interpretation is that you feel this suffering was undeserved, and rightfully so.
However this is where we are, it appears the suffering has left.

Kindest regards

Steve

Legge: The third line, magnetic, shows calamity happening to one who is free from insincerity -- as in the case of an ox that has been tied up. A passer-by finds it and carries it off, while the people in the neighborhood have the calamity of being accused and apprehended.

I think this speaks to how hard it is to lose your mother and perhaps references any blame you place on yourself, the medical care, or other factors. Encouraging you to be able to let those worries go over time or to offer yourself support and opportunities to heal from these concerns. It’s almost like a natural disaster in the sense that there is nowhere to point fingers, ultimately. But that’s from a rational perspective. From a human perspective, we rack our brains on each thing that could have been different. If any of that is true for you, go easy on yourself. Nothing really could have been different and, in the end, that may be more painful for you than for her, as many of the translations describe this as gain for the ‘traveler’ (as was wisely mentioned by you and others above.) Everyone else is left behind to navigate the loss.

Legge: Sometimes calamity may befall the best of us, even when there is freedom from insincerity. Line three, being magnetic in a dynamic place, is vulnerable to this misfortune. The people of the neighborhood are of course entirely innocent. On line three it is said: "The superior man seeks simply to be free from insincerity, and leaves the question of happiness and calamity to Heaven.”

I think perhaps you received this line with a message in there for you as well, if it’s possible to turn to faith or something bigger than yourself and know that you’re not in charge here on Earth, just doing the best you can. Even the most good and sincere and correct person can experience terrible misfortune, as your mother initially did and as you now have. I think this line expresses care for you and your peace. I’m so sorry for your loss. There’s no rushing grief along so I think it might be about the perspective and kindness you offer yourself (or others can offer you) as you move through this “Leaving the question of happiness and calamity to Heaven”

Dear redoleander' thanks for your comforting words especially about misfortune happening to good people. Since my question was focusing on whether my mum experienced peace after passing away I am also hoping the fellowship hexagram refers to my mum meeting loved ones on the other side. Thanks.
