Hello all, I was wondering whether someone could please give me some advice as to what this means. I drew these hexagrams in relation to my work and I am very concerned by 49 turning up "Radical Change." I am not sure how to relate to 31.1.

Last week I drew some hexagrams for the same matter which was 15.5 to 39 which indicated that there are opposing forces at work.

Could anyone please advise?

Thanks

I hesitate to do any divining for anyone else because my own skills are not that great. However, the first time I ever drew 49 it was a query about a work-related matter. I had been very badly treated by someone and had refused to work with them any more. My question was 'what's going on here' and the answer = 49 unchanging felt likea reflection of how I was feeling rather than an image of some great cataclysm to come. Since then, whenever I've drawn 49, it seems to have been just that - reflecting something inside me rather than external things coming at me. You don't say what the work situation is, but 15 is about modesty - being neither too little nor too much. 15.5 seems to be about being in a position to do something about asituation, particularly if you are in some kind of authority. I'm using Sarah Dening's commentary here. So, is there some kind of conflict at work where you could take some gently assertive action?

49 BTW generally seems to be a positive hexagram - sort of out with the old and in with the new.

I hope this helps you - there are others here who are much wiser about the I Ching than I am!

Thank you for your response. In a nut shell the situation is this: I was very badly treated at work and am in a weak position because I am a temporary worker (this is why I am confused about line 5 because i am definitely not in a position of authority). I was promised a permanent job and this is why I stayed here for so long. Then I was lied to and deceived and I was robbed of it due to nasty politics. Then there have been rumours going about that I am not happy and hr have found out and people have got nasty and then my line manager had concerns about me being here. I am really worried to be out of a job especially in the current market.

Hmm
I looked again at 31.1

Sarah Dening calls it 'Mutual Attraction' (31) and here are some of the things she says:

'the real issue is how you interact with whoever else is involved. Relationships thrive on care and attention. An aggressive approach would be quite wrong. Be patient and considerate. Do not try to force the pace.' 'The best way to influence the situation is by simply being yourself. Being anxious to create an impression will inhibit you. Whereas if you are relaxed and spontaneous, you will create just the right impression'.

of 31.1 she says 'There is a faint hint of new possibilities in the air. Do not place too much importance on this as yet. Avoid weaving fantasies about something which may never happen.

Given that this leads to 49, I think you have to look at what kind of impression you are making? If you are very worried (and that is absolutely understandable), then what kind of vibe are you giving out? In offices, people will often 'pick on' those they perceive to be weak, especially when their own position doesn't feel so strong. I'd ask the Yi how they see you and also what you need to change.

And it seems like positive change is in the air for you anyway. It may be that you stay where you are, or it may be that something new comes along. I think I'd ask what course of action to take.

Quick edit to add this:

You might like to read Hilary's commentary on 49 here

Thanks Ann, this is definitely intriguing stuff. In fact your interpretation struck a cord. I have been clinging on to the faint possibility of an opportunity all this time. Also I have been weaving fears and fantasies about my situation. I also realised that I was pushing really quite hard for this permanent job which made certain people dig their heals into the ground even more.

I decided to ask how I am perceived at work and I picked 17.2 "Following" changing to 58 "Joyous Lake." It seems fairly positive.

Well that seems to make sense 'Following, ie not 'leading'. Strangely things often happen when we stop trying for them and disengage from them. I'd just do the work as well as you can and work hard on feeling happy. Leave people alone and you'll find they come to you.

As I say, I'm no expert on this - look at my own reaction to 4 !! :duh:

Thanks for this. I also use the Sarah Dennings book and I find it quite useful. I find that the Wilheim translation a bit too cryptic.

Thanks again!
