How bad is Hexagram 36 in general! Help?

I've read Blofeld, Alfred Huang (excellent taoist approach) and of course Wilhelm my bible on the I Ching and that's only because he had the best Chinese master to help him translate everything :)

Well, Hexagram 36 is not my favorite to get.

Whether called Darkening of the Light, Wounded Brilliance, or Wounded Brightness, it implies both a diminished spirit, and one that is feigning or hiding behind a facade.

Richard Lynn has a lengthy and complex commentary on its meaning. As does Legge, Wilhelm; all of these make reference to the political situation of Wang Bi and others in antiquity.

Of course line 6 has frightened the heck out of me on more than one occassion, and even was a portent of my husband's death. :(

Ewald Berkers has a simple approach to the hexagram:

36. Wounded Brightness

Wounded brightness.
Beneficial is laborious persistence.

Being weakened. It is good to work diligently on the situation.
(The brightness is the light of consciousness, one's aliveness, one's energy. It being injured means that one's aliveness is diminished, one is being weakened.)

Book of Change

Iching is the book of change.

Movement comes from change lines.
Change line comes from the day/hr/month you run a reading.
In your inquiry, the hexagram does not come from a reading (For your privacy, I will not mention the source...read you in-box).

A hexagram without change line does not mean no movement and changes.
Secret movement or change comes from interaction of the five elements of each day (year/month/day/hour) with the hexagram six line five elements. Each line has one of the 5 elements.

In addition, the trigram and also line, and also hexagram all have seasonal character. In summer, metal element goes nowhere because it is fire and not metal that dominates the current time. In fall, metal is strong etc.

If you zoom into a big picture of hexagram 36, you start to worry. This is the lack of understanding of learning the Iching.

In your case, line 2 is the change line for that 6 year period. It changes into hexagram 11 (peace). Is it good? That depends. When peace is over, there is chaos in the next period. Is that bad? No. If a house needs repair because of its age, it is normal.

If a senior citizen dies of old age, this is normal. However, your life will still be disturbed.

Iching is the book of change. Please remember, I can buy at stock at 33 at $9:00 a.m. and only recover $28 at 4: 00 p.m. Or I can buy at $27 a few days later, and sell at $29. The destiny is in your own hands.

I caution everyone who learn Iching not to build theory without the basic knowledge supporting it.
