My son is a very gifted jazz guitarist with a severe learning disability and is severely bipolar, but stable on lithium. He also has juvenile arthritis for which he is on Humera, a painful injectable medication.but his spirit is indomitable...He is trying to get his BFA in Jazz performance at a highly rated college ...but his math dyslexia is effecting him in music theory...where you have to count out notes(1/16th note plus 1/8th note plus 1/64th note etc...you get the picture)...even though he can read music well... He took a test last night and thinks he failed...even though his Department Chair thinks he is the most gifted performer in the bunch...He will not be able to stay in the program if he dies not pass music theory. ...I do not understand Hexagram 43 in this context. I am so concerned for him!

A Mountain Goat or A Weed?

This is a line with difficulty in translation, but my intuition here tells me that it is about something in the wrong place. Here is some text from the Wikiwing:

"Amaranth: very nutritious, of medicinal value. Will grow on high ground, but its natural habitat is low-lying and moist. So here is something good and valuable, but not in the best place. "

Karcher avoids the difficulties of translation by summarizing: "You clearly must decide between two alternatives. Do not be afraid to move on. Act decisively. You are connected to a creative force."

My intuition here says that your son may be in the wrong place. If he stays within academia, he will always have to deal with music theory and math will raise its ugly head. Even if he gets past this one test, there will be others. This issue will come up again and again. (Some of the translations talk about the difficulty of eradicating weeds; this is what they mean here, that some difficulties will keep recurring until the base problem is eradicated or worked around.)

If he were performing, for example, he would not have these issues. Is it possible that your son is not in the correct place, that the academic degree is not the right path for him? In H43, I believe Yi is suggesting that you make a resolution or decision.

Finally, I have a great deal of experience with dyslexic children in schools at all levels. Have you fought for and gotten accommodations for testing and learning, such as extra time for testing, scribes, etc?

Best Wishes,
Tiger

Line 4 isn't a very encouraging line either...it indicates that you will be hurt where you are, and that you try to change your "resting place" to avoid more pain. It also indicates that people's words are untrustworthy.

Not sure...trying to recall from own experience i think 43.4 can be around refusing to go where inevitable circumstances take you...rebelling against the only way you can go, like a real butt head. Like theres only one door to go through to get where you want to go and you say 'no ! i ain't going through that door' so you're stuck then and pretty disgruntled about it too...if only you'd listen to the obvious.(but you won't believe it)..and it is obvious what you need to do to everyone else and they keep telling you...but you just won't have it..which is tough because theres not a lot of choice so in the end you get dragged in that direction anyway  and then you feel even more disgruntled because it can then be humiliating to have to concede that you must take this course of action, after you've stubbornly refused for so long. If you had done it willingly you may have been spared the humiliation (is that symbolised by 'no skin on thighs' ?) at least because you could have done it with some grace at least...as it is everyone sees you are forced into a corner. I say 'everyone sees' because 43 is so often around very open statements to others about what one is going to do..at least in 43.4 seems to me others tend to be involved in or looking on your decision making. Well that can't be always so but thats my current take....always under revision lol

dunno how that relates to the initial question but as CNMN seems to have vanished theres no point spending time on it i guess.

(Wonder what proportion of people here just vanish after getting answers) Actually just looked and there is no question...or i can't see what the question was anyway ?

Hi Cnmn,

Reading waht you said and looking at the line and especially the :
But if these words are heard
They won't be believed.

makes me think that perhaps your reading talks about unneccessary worries from your part. Perhaps there is another way to overcome that obstacle, some special deal. Some colleges don't leave out gifted persons. iTs an asset for them.

Thank you so much for your replies...and Tiger especially for yours about dyslexia etc. Yes, my son is a registered special ed student and has all the accommodations...extra time etc. BUT on this particular test he forgot to give in his request to the office on time so he had to take the test without any of his accommodations in the classroom... ...I think the wrong place is he should have taken his test in the Disabilities Office not the classroom. Maremaria I do worry very much for him as I have had to advocate so much to get him the accommodations he required over the years i.e. suing the Bd of Ed...going into the college over and ov er again to make sure they have the paperwork for his disabilities classification...switching him from one school to a special ed high school etc. His theory teacher really likes him...as my son is very sweet and respectful and works so HARD. I do think I should learn to worry less! Also Tiger...my son avoided this aspect of music theory for a long time because the math scared him...and now has to do it regardless...and I told him he has to practice with me the math involved much more so it is almost automatic and he absolutely agreed that he has no choice. So I think you're interpretation of stubbornly avoiding an action and now he is being forced to do this applies SO WELL! Thank you all so much for the feedback because it has been very helpful...I am still on the lookout to see if the entire program is wrong for him or only that he should have been in the Disabilities Office taking this test...!!!XOXO CNMN
