Hi all,

Asked the I Ching if I would make a successful artist, and the response I got was hexagram 45 line 4 changing to 8...is this as promising as it sounds?

Would welcome any thoughts on this, many thanks sparkler:)

I think that depends on what you are interpreting "success" to mean. If you are willing to sacrifice all to practice Art for Art's Sake, than yes, 45.4 is very encouraging. If you were thinking "success" would mean being able to make money or a name for yourself, then no, line 45.4 doesn't say anything about that. 45.4 is the line of the minister who is successful because he is specifically NOT striving for any special advantages for himself. His "success" is the good feeling that comes from being of service to his king - or in your case - to your muse.

In 45.4 there's a problem in following something just for its promise.
That's where the mistakes are made. The question of talent aside,
there are years involved in developing artistic technique (in fact the
Greek word for art was techne). You have to expect to work hard first,
especially if you want to be successful. That's unless you hit it just right
like that bozo who canned his own crap and sold it for 20,000 a can.
At that level the art world is a truly ridiculous scene, but that is a kind
of success.
As to 08.4, outwardly joining, this could be referring to what it takes
to be successful. It might be pointing to the pressure to compromise your
artistic vision to give the public the outward appearances it wants. It will
tend to be rare to find someone making a good living at art without
compromising, but 08.4 says to look for a way to do that, or at least to
comply only superficially or nominally.

You mean Piero Manzoni, right? Here is a dessert from him:

That's the guy. Hr made a bundle too.
I once acquired a big bag of bullshit, put 1 oz portions into baggies and went door to door selling it (in SanJose, CA, where I was going to college). It looked like cheap Mexican pot, but I promised the people that I really was trying to sell them a worthless sack of bullshit.
Got invited into about every fourth house or apartment to get high. Between that and sides hurting too bad from laughing, I had to give it up.
My only regret was when foreign exchange students answered the door. The pained look of confusion on their faces was really hard to bear: "I am so new in your country. Please don't doing this to me, goodbye please"

Well, Brad, you should have waited for the "cubes" to grow in the bullshit... I'm sure you'd have made a bundle...

We called them "cugumelos". I come from a cattle country and those were very popular when I was a youngster... :D

"Asked the I Ching if I would make a successful artist, and the response I got was hexagram 45 line 4 changing to 8..."

Hex 45.4 says to go after art not for selfish reasons but for the general good of all and this will in turn lead to success.

Hex 8 is joining together with others, joinining a group, coordinating, thus helping you develop your artist gifts, I would presume that this means going to art college and being a successful member of your class, so don't hesitate.
Therefore, I would assume that the answer that you received certainly indicates success at college which in turn may get you noticed if you decide to follow it as a profession. Maybe it also means to carry on working with others when you leave college as well, to gain recognition. Being a success at anything is relative, perhaps just being able to draw a picture is a success for some people.
