48.3 Well not being used...sadness
48.5 Well being used ...clear water to drink, yay
48.6 No hindrance at well

Above paraphrased slightly from Hilary translation

Question : What effect do I have on my mate

Changes to Hexagram 4: Youthful folly

Im guessing I come across as not mature enough yet, not seen as valuable currently as line 3 suggests...but line 5 and 6 - maybe will be valued later on in life?

How would others read this?

Hello Melting Pot

What a great question to ask.

Quite a lot of water knocking about in your reading.

I get the impression from the Yijings response that you have had some differences with your friend?

Here is a slightly different way of looking at your reading:

Yes, a well is where people come to drink the water. It is life sustaining. So your relationship is that for him. (You asked what effect, not what were you to him?)

The Nuclear Hexagram, or Core Theme, is Hx. 38 Diverging. A turning away from... so for the Well to be good there needs to be a 'turning away from' or, divergence from that which does not further it.

Now, how to deal with those three lines: I sometimes look at the lines as being options - e.g. if I do this then that will be where it leads. Here you might consider these as being components of your role in the relationship.

In this light:
Line 3 - Sometimes the Well is turbid and the relationship does not sustain you both. --> Hx.63 Already Crossing - You are already fixing this.

Line 5 - Sometimes the Well is full of cool clear water and it is good for the relationship. --> Hx.46 Ascending - A new seed growing in the earth -

Line 6 - And sometimes the Well is so damned good it lifts the spirits for both of you. --> Hx. 57 Subtle Penetration. Coming to understand the issues.

Now, I think that sometimes we get changing lines in order to produce the resulting hexagram we need. Heresy! But worth bearing in mind if some of the lines don't resonate too much.

Hexagram 4: I find the hexagram name 'Youthful Folly' to be pretty dubious at times. It can also be translated as 'unseen beginnings' and 'enveloping' (As in protecting the new or inexperienced). Youthful Folly is the mistakes of the inexperienced. Look at where it is in the hexagram sequence: First the two great powers (Hx's 1 & 2) who bring forth Hx.3 Sprouting the results of their coupling and then Hx.4 - Not so much youthful folly, but a new born, or beginning, lacking experience. Note the upper trigram Mountain and the lower trigram water. It is a spring coming out of the mountain or even giving birth, the waters breaking.

So here one might imagine a new start where it beholds one to take care and recognise that new lessons have to be learned. Where things that don't work are identified and jettisoned as the relationship re-forms or changes.

Does that resonate at all?

Wishing you well.

Hi Kevin, Rosada and Foxx777,

Thank you for your responses,

A lot of what you all said makes sense to me.

Especially your breakdown of lines 3.5.6 (of hex 48) and description of Hexagram 4 Kevin.

Line 3: We recently discussed what we are able to offer each other, but might need to discuss that again.

Foxx777 re: line 3 the obstacle or impasse is likely our work, other people/commitments and time constraints I guess

We both have travelling jobs, live in different towns...which is why I'm mostly happy supporting him from a distance or up close whenever the opportunity arises for now.

All our time together has been pretty much great or profound - I always leave feeling stronger, improved or having learned something new. We've only had a few very tiny short lived upsets here and there but a lot of good feelings both ways. Joyful company.

Rosada: I do encourage him to try new things...even though I'm younger and less travelled, with less worldly experience then him and friends his own age - I know I surprise or excite him sometimes...which is probably hard for most people to do, due to the exciting career he once had. He tells me that was his dream job, and we both know that he is no longer able to do it due to a medical condition.

He's been married, divorced. Whereas I've been single my whole life...but since meeting him I think I'm learning how to love, listen to others more.

I do wonder what is divergent or needs to be turned away from?

But actually if I think about the movie divergent, then the word is probably how I would describe myself. The lead character was divergent and her boyfriend in the movie was divergent as well...pretty sure his name was Four lol.

What effect do I have on my mate? Hexagram 48.3.5.6 to 4

48 means deeply connecting ; 4 means disordered in a clear way

The effect that you have on your mate is one that you do not always understand, although you know you do. You have a deep connection with yourself and the echoes of you just being you resonate with him and help him to develop in his own way.
Divergent means tending to be different or develop in different directions, so may not necessarily be a "turning away from", perhaps more a turning towards an opportunity for growth. Something you allude to in your post.
The Well - Bradford's translation
The noble young one, accordingly, labors for the people to encourage cooperation. So a call for you to promote further encouragement

Like other comments above Line 3 seems to be the place for most attention A possible question for line 3 - How do you affect how he drinks the water?, How is this approach contributing to the sadness?

Good Luck

If the question was originally

"how do I affect my mate" rather than "what effect do I have on my mate" (latter what I meant, really wanted to know) and this result was this answer 48.3.5.6 - would the interpretations everyone has written still stand? For me both are the same question worded differently.

I may re cast for further clarity of what this cast means in the future - but I'd like to dwell on this a bit more... I have received 48 for what I am to him in the past.

Kevin mentioned 38 Divergence or in other translations 'Opposition' is the core theme, unclear hexagram.

One thing I've noticed is that he tends to externally reflect how I'm feeling most of the time...no matter how far apart we are. I seem to pick up on where he is at before he tells me. Sometimes I think having feelings in general is a cause for sadness as they change over time due to circumstances we can't control. The love we have also causes us grief when someone leaves or passes away.

Quote: Is it possible to avoid pain? Yes, but you’ll never learn anything. Is it possible to know something without ever having experiencing it? Yes, but it will never truly be part of you. – Paulo Coelho, Aleph

In my culture the God of Peace is also our thoughts and emotions - part of us...in the same way the God of War is part of us, which causes us to fight for what we believe in.

I have learned more about cooperation from my time with this person...sharp mind, interesting heart.

Love is found in the highest vision of the soul - like ice bergs we probably only show 10% of who we are on the surface to most people but those who ger to know us "well" may want to keep returning to us.

Update:
I received this cast again for a new question, same person/ relationship-

What is the best thing to do for this relationship with X?

48.3.5.6 > 4

Don’t be a fool or afraid to love fully?

Be clear and consistent, communicate better/ properly.

Be sincere 💕
