I'm trying to cut ties with an agency and work for one of their companies direct. So I asked:- Can I trust X (specific manager/person) at company X to give me the work he promised. And I got Hexagram 49.4 > 63

Can I trust X at company X to give me the work he promised?

Hi LuckyGuy,

"Can I trust X at company X to give me the work he promised?"
49.4 to 63 ~ Reform Accomplished ~ Auspicious!

Here's Joey Yap's 'Plum Blossom Divination':

49.4 Yao Text:

One's remorse disappears, as others start believing in one. A government that is undergoing a change will bring about good fortune.

There must be adequate authority at hand to address radical changes. One should have, in addition to an influential position, a certain amount of inner strength. One's actions should correspond with the higher truth and not spring from arbitrary or petty motives. Finally, people will only support things and people that they instinctively feel are just.

Career and Wealth:

There are new arrangements afoot in human resources that could be very favourable. However, if the situation remains unchanged, then one is very likely to be in some sort of trouble. It is better to welcome the change than shun it.

So, for all the right reasons, you are making a move that X at company X can respect and support, and X believes in you and your work, too.

Good Luck!

For peace of mind, is there any way you could double-check with X? (If you've already addressed this in a different thread, I don't remember, sorry.) Could you call and say, "Hi X, do you remember saying you'd hire me if I left the agency? Well - what if I do that tomorrow (/next week, /whenever)? Is the offer still good? When could I start work?"

(Not in those exact words, of course.)

You'd have to check with X fairly soon anyway, wouldn't you? Could you do it before you quit, instead of right afterwards?

But about your reading, I do think Yi's saying you can trust him. Yi speaks "oracle" rather than English, which makes it tricky, but I think so.

You feel nervous and uncertain about this, which - digression - I think is reflected in the fan yao, 63.4, the line "across" from your moving line (49.4 changes to 63, and 63.4 changes to 49, so 49.4 and 63.4 are fan yaos of each other).

That's one thing the relating hexagram and the fan yao can do, reflect how it feels to you. It can be the most recognizable thing in the reading, since it's how you already feel, or the context that already exists, rather than the new, unfamiliar information Yi might be giving you in the primary hexagram / moving line. But you got the reading the way you got it, not flipped around.

[edited - caveat - this won't be how the primary-relating relationship works in all readings, of course.]

The fan yao says (Hilary's translation):

'The leaks are plugged with clothes of silk.
For the whole day, on guard.'

So - 63 generally is about crossing a river, being underway rather than making preparations (preparations would be 64). If I'm not mis-remembering, Trojina often says 63 can reflect that really you've already made the decision, it's pretty much inevitable even if you're busy denying it. As Radiofreewill said, "Reform Accomplished" - "Radical Change / Revolution, Underway."

But at line 4 you're not all the way across, you're only partly across, and your boat is leaking, or at least you're worried it will leak, or even sink before you're across.

So that sort of condition is alive in this, but since it's the mirror or reflection rather than your actual moving line, it could mean you're worried but it won't happen, or that you'll be okay as long as you plan for things going wrong. Those are quite different in practice, and I don't know which is really true, but I think the end result will be the same? You'll get across, maybe by the skin of your teeth, but you'll make it.

Didn't you say you do have a plan for the 6 months, if need be? That could be the sort of thing the fan yao is referring to - have a plan for making emergency repairs to your boat (so to speak), and you'll make it across without actually sinking.

For contrast - I wonder if the flipped-around reading, 63.4 > 49, might mean feeling very confident (49.4) when you really ought to be more worried about your boat (63.4).

Enough about the fan yao. Here's what Hilary says in her book about your actual moving line:

'Regrets vanish, there is truth and confidence.
Changing mandate, good fortune.'

Roll those words around. "Regrets vanish." (Yay?) "There is truth and confidence." (You can trust X and have confidence in him?) "Changing mandate" - a mandate is something like "what you must do now," "what you are called to do" (I'm quoting from Hilary's Language of Change). Your mandate is changing - or maybe if you allow it to change - good fortune?

Hilary's commentary:
You are ready; the revolution is already underway. You cannot regret the past when you inhabit the present moment, trusting the unfolding changes, and trusting yourself. This is the time when spiritual authority is taken from the old ruler and given to the new. So your guiding principles change, and with them your sense of what you are to do. The new will be better than the old.

Thanks radiofreewill and Lisselle for your in depth advice.

From what you say 49 and with 4 does sound encouraging. It’s what I believe from knowing this person for 5 years. I am almost ready to quit the agency (where work has plummeted) and ready and planned for the transition (6 months). And re: the boat, if this is the transition and warning me there’s a chance you won’t make it, or only by the skin of your teeth, I think I’m ready for that too. I do have the confidence (and money) to do it and am sure I want to. But I haven’t pressed the switch yet. However, from what the reading gave, and knowing the state of things and both your advisories, I think I’m ready to do it and take a leap of faith. Ps: I'm not allowed to approach the person in question, only if I'm called in by the agency.
