Hello Everyone,

Just wondering what your thoughts are regarding hexagram 59 Dispersion; do you think it's related to the communications industry (publishing/broadcasting/media) and the Internet somehow? Carrying a message across seas...

Thanks,

YM x

I think that's a very good image for it, particularly broadcasting, going to seed, spreading yourself out.

Thank you both! I always equated this hexagram to communications and I'm glad you guys can see that in it too!

I think Internet correlates with 16 hex. Fourth line describes Internet pretty well. If you forgive me for the mentioning of correspondences between I Ching and Tarot I propose to look at 8 of Wands. As for hex 59 it’s another story, like King Lear, for example.

Hey. I can see how you connect Hexagram 16.4 with the internet ianek because it brings people and ideas together. Which also makes me think of Hexagram 45.

Both of those, Hexagrams 16.4 and 45, to me are talking more about coming together and joining which the internet DOES do.

I think the internet is amazing. If I close my eyes and try and picture it in my mind, I see this fast growing, spreading "thing" that is all encompassingly dispersing and expanding. Like Wind over water. I would say 59 is a perfect example of my inner vision of the internet.

It can be looked at as joining parts together or as dispersing parts out.

hex 45 is in interesting idea. If you look at corresponding Tarot card you will see that h16 and h45 are both the eights (wands and pentacles).

Perhaps, I can say that h16 corresponds internet in work while h45 refers to engineering of the internet and its expansion.

I think of 59 as dissolving and evaporating. To me i don't especially associate that with the internet. It depends how you think of the internet I suppose, it speads information, make billions of connections, like a giant brain. But are such connections belonging especially to 59 ? I don't think so. I think you could take pretty much any hexagram and find how it is like the internet. Hex 7 would be a feature IMO as it is a mass thing....and yet it feeds every inclination/interest known to man so it is also like 48 and it can certainly make a 49 and also serve as a 50. much modern music for example I think has used internet as cauldron, people and bands who would never been given a chance by recording companies and so on get to do their thing through the internet.

Hard to see it as 52 though ! except it may account for not seeing people.....many use it for self presenting and marketing 22....of course now I am talkingof uses of it rather than what it is but........
......wind over water, evaporates to nothing, reforms elsewhere. I don't see an evaporation and re forming process with the internet...well no more than talking on the phone or sending text messages.

If 59 is the internet to you then thats fine but i don't think its like a solid fact or universal view that 59 is the internet, it just depends on your point of view much the same as a belief that Tarot cards respond in particular to hexagrams depends on your point of view.

Hi Young Maid
Some further thoughts on your excellent connection.
The Sufis have a parable about a little stream coming up against a vast desert and despairing of ever getting across. Finally the wind comes along and talks him into surrendering to evaporation, being carried across and then falling back as rain.
Omar Khayyam, a Sufi, wrote the mnemonic for this as "I came like water, like wind I go" describing the spiritualization of life, transcendance into a higher state, surrender, etc.
Huan is of course composed of Khayyam's Water (coming) and Wind (going). It uses the metaphors of melting and evaporation to talk about changes to a higher state, and talks about the process of spiritualization, especially in the Da Xiang. The king transcends his earthly life by leaving a better kingdom, the Buddha transformed his life into his Dharma, his temple. The best writers live longer in their published works. Plants can only live forever by transforming their life into seed and broadcasting. The internet can be thought of as the cloud into which the creators of new ideas evaporate and broadcast their memes like seed into the world.

so TV and radio could also be thought of as 59 ? If someone wanted to attach hexagrams to them that is. Both involve ideas being broadcast and so evaporating.

Specifically, that aspect of broadcasting that involves moving from a local to a distributed state.

I don’t think that so much depends upon point of view, but I understand why you think so. In short, talking about archetypes most of people can’t reach archetype level and take associations from their personal unconscious that’s why the most of the posts on “esoteric” themes have a psychoanalytical tinge. On this individual level everything is subjective, the objectivity appears on the archetype level.

Omar Khayyam, a Sufi, wrote the mnemonic for this as "I came like water, like wind I go" describing the spiritualization of life, transcendance into a higher state, surrender, etc.
I doubt that Khayyam exactly meant “spiritualization of life, transcendance into a higher state, surrender, etc.” in this rubaiyat, it’s only your interpretations. But thanks for the citing it’s interesting for considering. In this case, I think, we should treat of the “wind” and “water” as Empedocles elements not Ba Gua. It means that we have to consider eight hexagrams (Wind – Sun and Chen, Water – Kan and Dui). One of them – H5 “Waiting”- describes main tone of Khayyam’s works. More precisely its fifth line: “Waiting at meat and drink.” You could say that there is no houri in this hexagram. Yes, but you can see them on the corresponding Tarot card –
